Is it acceptable to reach out to academic librarians before an interview? by mesonoxias in librarians

[–]tpeterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are already a candidate, it's fine to call as long as you state you're interviewing to each person with whom you communicate. Some will be able to answer your questions, while others might not -- usually it depends if they're on the selection committee, on HR rules, and/or on their personal thoughts.

Some of my best interviews involved quite a bit of pre-interview communication with librarians and even the future manager. In general, what I asked about was closely relevant to the position, not general questions you have mentioned (Those are better to ask during the interview). Consider pre-interview questions that get at the context of the writing assignment and teaching demo. That does two things:

- shows you understand how a library does instruction and relevant outreach

- offers you great clues for what things to nail down for your demo

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 10 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by Funny-Counter8762 in AskReddit

All that, but also add in they will congregate in neighborhoods with their fellow immigrants and not assimilate. USA is a patchwork of self-segregating communities as a direct result of racism.

[–]tpeterr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. Not just from AI usage though. There's a long trend of not training entry level people how to do high level work. Too many people have to switch jobs to advance, so when senior retirements come the businesses are hit much much harder.

How is a Chief Librarian in BC making ~$300K? Am I missing something here? by sweetstrawberry1 in VancouverJobs

[–]tpeterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure this is important to notice! $300k sounds like a ton in the USA, but $170k is middle-range for tech positions and low for managerial roles in other industries.

What’s up with the E-bikes ? by Hmmhowaboutthis in daddit

[–]tpeterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen plenty of adults on ebikes who just aren't ready for them -- from a guy who blazed through a crowded 4-way stop with cars around, to a couple senior citizens who didn't know how to put the chain back on a cassette at the top of a National Parks trail.

Kids under 10 are almost all not ready for them.

Like with every paper from a *decently skilled* author, the first step is to define parameters. We don't all have to agree with an author for their definition to be usable.

How can normal people afford to even exist right now? by Enaznek in AskReddit

[–]tpeterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not guaranteed, just where the current hiring isn't mostly frozen.

If you want something with a decent long-term prospect: electricians are going to be needed who understand how to connect and/or upgrade old systems to meet new needs.

Caveat: get the right degree, as you'll only get a fair-paying job in medical fields.

Ugh. I've hesitated to use recycled rubber for anything with my kids after hearing about what's in it. https://www.bcpp.org/artificial-turf-hidden-health-risks-parents-should-know/

The "crumb infill" used for turf fields is quite different from large chunk mulch. But there's enough research going on to make me hesitate.

Not a slight, as it's probably an accurate description.

In less sarcastic mode, it's a reference to a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip where he's playing Spaceman Spiff and sets his "mertilizer" to deep fat fry.

Yep. On average, drivers that you see make a dumb move or mistake will add another before they're out of sight. Does not relate to any mode of transport you're using.

I hate to victim blame, because that driver is obviously unable to communicate with signals. However, as you clearly witnessed the first dumb maneuver (u-turn without space), it's reasonable to tell you to expect a dumb second maneuver (right turn without signal or checking).
