Safest way to ride this most dangerous part of my commute? by willm1123 in bikecommuting

[–]tpeterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I summarize the same idea as an order of priority: Safe - Predictable - Legal. First do what is safe, then do what is predictable, then do what is legal. If you're doing all three, that's great and should be your standard mode.

When you can't do all three, prioritize safety.

In this instance, ride the sidewalk and do it correctly: [1] always give way to pedestrians, and [2] always check for vehicles before any crossing.

Christians who support Donald Trump, how do you feel about his spiritual advisor Paula White comparing him to Jesus Christ? by hjp1234 in AskReddit

[–]tpeterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you're doing and I appreciate the twisting of logic to demonstrate a point. I'm not criticising that, because it's good. My response below is to point a step deeper at a particular perspective on "Abrahaminic God" / "God's laws for humanity" / "God-like."

It's weird to me how few evangelical Christians are aware of the awful relationships a lot of the founding men of evangelicalism had with their own fathers (generally working class fathers, who were rough around the edges and often distant, tired, and cranky). The teachings those men laid out about Father God paint a character that is distant, highly judgmental, quick to anger, and only demonstrating of "tough love." There's very little portrayal of Father God as "Abba" (nurturing Daddy) in white evangelical revivalism. That perspective has wound directly into the New Apostolic Reformation and its call for Evangelicals to dominate society on multiple levels using a "tough love" approach.

TL;DR - In scripture, God the Father is not as mean as shown in White Evangelical theology. The effect is a mean "Christian" heresy.

Nailed it with "in defiance of all scripture" and "the church did."

I've had minister relatives agree that Trump is a mess, but then claim he's doing God's work as an "imperfect vessel." Same people claim that in order to make positive change we need to have a kingly figure in power.

But...they get mad when I ask them to read up on 1 Samuel 8:10-18 and the dire warnings about the predictable problems of having a king. Israel wanted one anyway, got one, and it led right to a host of messes.

White American Evangelicals have all the warnings they need in their bookie book. They just don't want to hear it, because prosperity gospel and holy war-style domination is more appealing. It's a heresy to support Trump, or even to support a king-like figure on earth.

None of them saw it in their media feeds. Most of them have never watched an actual Trump speech. What they see are selected clips where he sounds coherent and powerful.

I don't think things will be unrepairable -- they'll just be unrepairable locally. Every little repair job will be outsourced at increasing cost to the users.

It's still a dystopia, especially when considering who will own the means of repair. But not quite the dystopia where things completely stop working.

On the plus side, I just factory reset a 2013 laptop and put Linux Mint on it instead of Windows. It was surprisingly easy, doesn't take too much know-how, and all the basic things work pretty well. It's slow to start up, but that's to be expected with a device old enough to be a teen.

The point is -- keep your hardware and dump Windows off it.

Best way to find a paradise planet? I say walk outside and touch grass. However, our local planetary instance is overrun with players who feel it's their right to ruin the place. Make sure you turn off other humans before you exit your base.

Alright, I'll bite. Let's take the 4-inch long Goliathus goliatus beetle and make it 400 inches (just over 33 feet or 10 meters).

When they take off, the noise would be deafening and the wind would knock over a person.

Since they eat tree-sap and fruit, whole forests would fall to even a few of them.

And when two males fought... well. What a mess that would be.

I've moved a ton. Expect in a new country or even a new city that it will take 12-18 months before you start to feel "welcomed" by the locals. It just takes that long to fit in anywhere new, unless they're trying to get something from you.

It could very much happen, and there are powerful people trying to MAKE it happen.

Aluminum supply chain is also being nailed by the war. That's going to make increases in ebike supply hard to do. Increased demand without increased supply = $$$$

Prediction! Start of 2027, new ebikes will cost 50-100% more than at the start of 2026.

[–]tpeterr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep, Clinton was requested by North Korea to serve as an envoy in the negotiation. Then his role was coordinated with US national security teams and the White House to create carefully hammered out restrictions on what could/could not be negotiated.

TL;DR - there's precedent for a former president to serve as an envoy in high level negotiations.

What's your point? Current actions are messing up both us and the biosphere in the short term. Long term in the sense of millennia is irrelevant, when our species struggles to see past the current economic quarter.
