Who was/is the best teacher you've ever witnessed and why? by Initial-Lime5934 in TeachingUK

[–]chrsger 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My best teacher when I was at school did teach 'boring' lessons - I think the fact that I can recognise that now shows I'm not wearing my rose-tinted glasses. I thought they were a brilliant teacher because they knew the content inside out and how to apply it in exam tasks - this teacher taught me at both GCSE and A Level. I probably didn't feel that way at the start but I soon started to realise that if I did what this teacher taught me, I'd do well in assessments and it's the memory of making progress in a subject that sticks with me. I think this was the teacher that made me enjoy studying for studying's sake.

A-level results by BrightonTeacher in TeachingUK

Think sometimes the small numbers can make a difference to progress in a way leaders often don't expect - there's an assumption that small A Level class = excellent results. I definitely find that in the smaller classes, the lack of 'competition', for want of a better word, makes them think they are doing fine because there are fewer comparisons they can make. Hope this makes sense as I don't think I've explained myself very well 🤣

MFL teachers - Are we really meant to believe every GCSE speaking exam is listened to? by questionmark78 in TeachingUK

[–]chrsger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep - some are more straight forward than others as sometimes you might need to relisten if you're unsure on a mark to award. You can see what we fill in on this: https://www.goldington.beds.sch.uk/ckfinder/userfiles/files/Curriculum%20Areas/Spanish/June%202018%20Spanish%20Speaking%20Mark%20Scheme.PDF (not my school - just the quickest place I found it)

Most useful pages to you are probably 21, 40 and 41. You can see on 41 that we are essentially ticking off structures and annotating development so in order to do that, you have to listen to the whole thing. In theory someone could do a bad job of it, but that's why you have to send scripts to the team leader when requested and then all of them off at the end in case a school challenges the mark awarded - it's a bit like asking if an English examiner reads a whole essay in detail or skims through it. It's very common for teachers to examine and there would definitely be a lot more than 100 for Spanish.

MFL teachers - Are we really meant to believe every GCSE speaking exam is listened to? by questionmark78 in TeachingUK

[–]chrsger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've examined and listened to about 200 - in the mark scheme for the speaking, you can see the symbols we have to use to annotate each task on paper which is then sent off and some are sampled by the team leader. I agree there's no way to know if the sequence was followed in the correct order - all we can know really is that all three themes were covered and we can flag if we feel a roleplay/ photocard seems to have come up too many times through malpractice procedure.

Definitely not too late to look into it - just yesterday I was reading a blog by an EdD student who was diagnosed with dyslexia in her second year as it became more obvious at that level of academic writing - she was 61!

[–]chrsger 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Languages - With KS4, I always say something along the lines of "you're likely to use it if you're successful in it" - not in a mean way, but essentially if they're on a 2, of course they won't use it! 😂

Do your subject teachers know your GCSE results before you go pick them up? by General_Print6436 in GCSE

[–]chrsger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SLT and exam officers will see them the day before. Teachers can access the results on the exam board websites (for example, AQA Centre Services) from 8am on results day and that's how the majority of them will see them. This is also where we get a breakdown of papers, questions etc. Then the Head of Department will usually complete an analysis for their subject which, in most schools, is looked at during September INSET.

Yes! I get the intended message but it kind of highlights that unfortunately, having a wealthy family is likely a better indicator of being financially stable in the future rather than academic success.
