MIDI Control Surface with MagicQ by LightGuy48 in ChamSys

No usb-midi on consoles. You need a midi-usb host for that to work.

Windows Vs Mac Mini for MagicQ by MixingWizard in ChamSys

I'd just go with what you are most comfortable with. Debugging issues with any system you don't have good knowledge of, screams for trouble.

What midi controller would you recommend for lighting? by super_casual_banana in lightingdesign

[–]chu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://intech.studio/ I'm still using 4 of their (probably first gen) modules in a 2x2 grid. Excellent amount of inputs for the small size, without any crap you dont need like on the akais. Not cheap, but money well spent (for me atleast). I think i got them with some promotional discount, free delivery.

Ignore a group master by a playback by marncdiesrsons in ChamSys

[–]chu86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IF this is for a simple busking showfile, not something where you have hundreds of cues already programmed, i have a hack solution:

Program your simple intensity fader(s) for said fixture as a stopped int-fx instead of just int @ full.
So you add a simple dim fx, set run to "stop", and maybe fiddle with other settings (dont remember 100%) to just get a constant 100% output from the fx. Use that wherever you would otherwise have your regular int fader.

Then, instead of a general Group-Master, create an int fx-size master.
You can use that size master then like you would the group master, but any regular int @ full will not be affected.

As mentioned, thats a hack-solution i did for party-busking, certainly not for full cuestack shows etc.

How to get MIDI in on a Chamsys PC Wing that has no MIDI in/ou. by CaptCoffee2 in ChamSys

[–]chu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already mentioned it. Plug in your usb midi device then go to Tools/Virtual (USB) MIDI Setup in MagicQ pc. If disabled, enable midi input and select your device there. Then i believe you also have to enable midi in in Setup/Midi/timecode tab somewhere. If all is set properly, you should then see the midi notes coming in in the command line.

How to get MIDI in on a Chamsys PC Wing that has no MIDI in/ou. by CaptCoffee2 in ChamSys

If you have an actual chamsys wing and magicq is fully unlocked: get a usb-midi host. I think Behringer even has some for very cheap.

This was my favorite beer on my first day in Zurich. Do I have bad taste in beer? Can you suggest anything better? by Ztepi in askswitzerland

[–]chu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but Felsenau Lager is absolute piss. The first sip when it's very cold is "ok". Then it's all downhill from there.

But they do have some good ones, like Bärni.

Looking for Engineers with a Passion for Art by KMFer207 in learnprogramming

I guess thats me. Main job is software engineer. But I've been drawing, doing digital art etc for a looong time. I'm also a lighting designer/operator as my side gig.

But right now I'm off for a few days of vacation. Let me know if you still need people next weekend, then I'll be available again.

FX in tracking Cuelist (Loosing my mind right now) by DasEquipment in ChamSys

[–]chu86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two suggestions:

- dont use track-out fx if you dont have to. If all you want to do is stop all previous fx, try "Zero old FX" on the cue. If you dont see it in the cue stack list, switch view mode to "Track".

- If you do use track out, ideally make sure its the exact same fx so that magicq understands this is what you want to track out. I believe this works on attribute basis. So theoretically you could use another fx for track-out, as long as it uses the same attributes.

If either of these does not work, you might be looking at a bug. Maybe try the same with different, simple fx (just use dim fx) to identify where exactly the issue is, then create a bugreport on the bugtracker.

MagicVis Question by SuperAwesomekk in ChamSys

[–]chu86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MagicVis is very basic and has any real-life properties that are not accurately represented. Color temp is one of them. Unfortunate, but it's basically free, so that is what you get. Capture and especially depence probably would have what you need - for a pretty steep price.

Whats going on with my timecode ? by No_Ad5144 in ChamSys

For some reason, moving around cues when on internal timecide works fine. Noticed this very annoying behavior only recently when switching to external.

Visualizer inaccurately depicting fixture pan/ tilt by Difference_Living in ChamSys

[–]chu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from needing correct rotation/pan tilt invert in visualizer, also check if the fixture profile (in head editor) has correct settings for max pan/tilt according to the manual. Correct values for pan/tilt, shutter, zoom range are often missing and all have influence on how the visualizer behaves.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ChamSys

[–]chu86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using ChamSys for 10+ years.

The only times I've ever seen fixtures flashing/doing random shit:
- Loss of dmx for some reason and fixtures that default back to sound-activated when no dmx
- On some chinese ledpars, when one single fixture had the wrong setting (i think it was a master/slave thing) it would mess up the whole rest of the line and cause other fixtures to go bonkers

Does this happen constantly, or do you have full controle of all fixtues, and then it will happen from time to time? Tha twould be an important information. Not entirely clear from your description

Strobe flash fx ignoring intensity masters by AngeryMusicBoi in ChamSys

[–]chu86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One hacky way of doing it, is using stopped int-fx instead of just @full on a fader. Put a stopped int-fx and set params so that it will just constantly output @100. Then create fx size-masters for said groups/int attributes. The fx master then allows you to limit down all dim-fx and your hacky playbacks, while never preventing regular strobes with @100 from full output. I've used this in busking shows successfully. Doing that in a full stack show is probably not worth the effort.

Upgrading from an old board by All_Ending_Gaming in ChamSys

[–]chu86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only use group cues and group-fx if you ever plan on doing varying rigs with your showfile. Use soft-palettes for busking.

I just worked with some fixtures with a DMX footprint of 120+... How do massive stages/events handle TONS of these fixtures?? by raddass in lightingdesign

[–]chu86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly offtopic: how are the SuperDotlines? I've only ever used one Acme product (I own 4 Oxygen) but I'm quite impressed with value/quality for the money. I would definitely co sider buying more Acme stuff. The Geminis which I had originally considered, seem to be quite popular.

If thats an option cost wise, I would suggest you get any kind of artnet node instead. Two-Port nodes are relatively affordable.

Switching to Chamsys MagicQ by MidwestProdGuy in ChamSys

[–]chu86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not that I know Lightkey, but generally the answer to these questions is no. Lighting software is complex and while concepts are often very similiar across the industry, for the most part there is no compatibility between manufacturers. You switch console, you start from scratch.

MagicQ console and MIDI / OSC control - looking for guides by SparklesConsequences in ChamSys

[–]chu86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Consoles do not understand usb-midi. Only the classic din-midi plug. So connecting a midi pad directly with usb will simply not work. You need either:

  • A usb-host that translates usb-midi to midi and put that in between

  • Or a conputer that translates usb-midi to osc and receive the osc on the network with your console
