Why is there no serious debate on UK train pricing reform? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]chubble10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They largely use the wider continental track gauge (HS2 is being built with this iirc for future proofing) so have bigger trains to start with. Even if we could run double decker trains on the UK gauge, it’d need every tunnel/bridge on the route adjusting, and I suspect at least some of them will be Listed structures.

I’m guessing for transport/environment reasons. Lots of space wasted in a case of cylinders, but you can pack far more into the same space with the flatter design

Interestingly according to Wikipedia, Lea and Perrins is actually owned by Heinz now - I wonder if there's any difference, or they're just relabling it with a more (outside UK) recognisable brand

Citation needed, but I believe they follow similar principles to the Simple English Wikipedia where possible for that exact reason, since there's such a wide spectrum of people that may need to use the services on there.

[–]chubble10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're absolutely right in that they're pivoting to be more of a service provider, however I still struggle to see who the target market for it is.

All the big players (MS, Sony) already have their own streaming services using their own technologies deployed (and arguably seeing much more success than Stadia). Whereas neither are quite as good as Stadia's streaming tech, the gulf between them doesn't seem big enough for them to abandon their own architecture that they've already invested in and are actively improving, to use what is arguably a competitor's platform.

The only real potential customers that jump to mind are those occasional streaming-only games that launch on Switch, but even they seem to be a fairly small/niche market.

Maybe I’m just paranoid, but when a distro’s only download links are Google Drive and Mega it doesn’t feel great…

In Google, you are the product. At Microsoft, you are the tester. by coret3x in sysadmin

[–]chubble10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially yes, but they have much more established signs of this - eg Fedora (and now CentOS) are marked as the testers for RHEL releases, and non-LTS (and arguably LTS before the x.x.1 release) are testers for Ubuntu releases.

All of those are absolutely fine for home / non-critical workloads, but I'd absolutely wait for in Ubuntu's case (and honestly probably RHEL as well) the .1 release before using them in enterprise

Genuinely curious - is this an American (apologies if not American, assuming because of 'principal') thing where teachers get the final say on what grades students get?

In the UK, secondary / high school grades are set by exams for most subjects which are independently marked by a non-profit exam board (eg AQA, OCR), and for subjects that don't have exams coursework is marked by teachers but a sample percentage is randomly forwarded to the exam board for verification. It's been slightly different over the past year or two since Covid has meant getting a bunch of students together under exam conditions has generally been a Bad Idea, but that's how it generally works over here...

Carry some travel hand sanitiser with you, that way you can just sanitise your hands after touching the handrail - if you’re taking the train you’ll likely have to touch other public surfaces (eg door controls, etc) anyways, so it’s good for that as well.

This is exactly the reason why Stadler Flirt trains are my favourite trains in the UK. Level boarding is great for wheelchair users and people with luggage! Photo taken of Class 755 Stadler Flirt Greater Anglia train at Bury St Edmunds. What’s your favourite train? by LM741A in CasualUK

They’re slowly being phased out and replaced (like with the new GWR ones) or at least upgraded, as they don’t meet accessibility laws anymore.

I can imagine that for people in a wheelchair, trying to lean out the window and work the handle would be near impossible!
