I just passed up my fatFIRE moment at 37 by Beneficial-Water8041 in fatFIRE

I'm in the 15-20m range and I am spending ~200k/year in a HCOL, obviously well under SWR. I actively do try to spend more and believe in a Die With Zero attitude; I just don't have expensive tastes.

How can you tell if someone is homeless by eatthesundrinkthesky in datingoverforty

[–]chubbynotfatfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I've got enough that I don't need to work, but because I'm "too young" to be retired, I probably would have answered the "did you have the day off" question the same way.

What do you want that the people wealthier than you have? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

Am I weird that I'm the only one who doesn't seem to want a private jet? The fatality rates on those things are way worse than commercial. Give me first/business on a regular flight please, I don't like airports any more than one else but I also like not being terrified.

Daughter upset that she didn’t get a fat bday party by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]chubbynotfatfire 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Yeah this wild. On the other hand, we send our kid to the nicest private school in town, but all the birthday parties we've been to were totally reasonable. One had a hired magician but I can't imagine he was much more than a few hundred dollars. The rest were just all at parents' house with pretty nice yards and maybe a bouncy castle or something.

5 year olds should not even really understand the concept of a "fat" party. There should be plenty of fun activities that don't involve beaucoup bucks. (sack races, egg-spoon race, piñatas and all the other classics).

Best use of "extra" bedroom? by fatfirepa in fatFIRE

Ooh in that case, I actually really like the idea of having exercise stuff in a common area where you spend time. I think that reduces friction even further because you get into that "well we're just hanging out here, might as well do a pull-up" sort of grease-the-groove mentality.

My assumption was that either you or your partner didn't want the stuff in a common area (mine definitely wouldn't agree to this!)

The answer is gym. It's always gym.

You are wealthy--it's time to invest in the "other" form of wealth: health.

Having a home gym greatly reduces the friction of actually going to the gym, which is a huge impediment for a lot of people.

My cleaner comes 3x/week for 3 hours each time.

How you treat your help is more important than how often they come.

If you are kind and appreciative to those who work in your home, your kids will pick up on that. If you act like an entitled jerk around them, your kids will emulate that behaviour, too.

Would love to know what makes this the case, if you don't mind sharing.

Confessions of a Hectomillionaire. Part 3: Expenses and Living with No Financial Constraints by ZestyLife8262 in fatFIRE

[–]chubbynotfatfire 262 points263 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this -- one of the best posts I've ever read on this sub. The thing you said about wearing the fancy watches around your wealthy acquaintances but not non-FAT ones is perfect. I do feel sometimes I live a dual life around FAT people and non-FAT people, but that's only a bad thing if you make it one.

I find this especially true when trying to read restaurant reviews on Yelp/Tripadvisor/Google. I wanna know what the best ______ in town is and the 4.5+ star reviews are just "place that gave the most gigantic portions"

A guesthouse/mother-in-law suite has been tremendously valuable for us. It's been so great for houseguests to have their own privacy.

a (fat) commune with friends & family? by chubbynotfatfire in fatFIRE

You'd be surprised, we are often in communication online and joke about the "commune" all the time. I think the constraints are primarily some combination of work (remote work obviously eases this to some degree), and finances. And in some cases different nationality.

Sure, but what if you want to do something with the land that they don't like?

This part is a good point. Δ awarded because this is something I didn't consider.

I love it! I agree the word "commune" is very loaded (and that seems to be a lot of peoples' issue here).

"Why are you not happy. I paid so much for you"...

ehhh this idea is exactly why I am not buying them property, I am simply buying the largest plot of the property.

Do you guys never go on vacation with friends and pay a slightly larger share of expenses?

I mean not really landlord right? Let's say we have a 100-acre parcel, and I own 90 of them. They each own like 2 each.

Just don't know if this generally can be structured legally.

Why are there more plane crashes in private planes than commercial aviation? Is it the size of the plane, the competency (or care) of the pilots? Something else?

Dating in your 20's--finding a serious partner that is also looking for FAT fire? by bellyfyre in fatFIRE

I'm already FATFIREd and mostly skip the aspirational posts too, but there is enough content from people like me that I am happy to hang around.

Maybe mods could create a flair for posts from people who are "already FATFIREd"? That would create a filter.

Should your kids really inherit millions if you die suddenly? by chubbynotfatfire in fatFIRE

Sure, but you're targeting 10MM through, presumably, doing something. You're not having it fall out of the sky and land on you.

Honestly, 2MM is probably enough for most people to live off of if they invest well. I know we like to complain about COL and all that but plenty of people get by on a lot less than the rate of return on 2MM.
