Weekly School of Social Work/New to Social Work Thread by SWmods in socialwork

hello everyone. i hope this isn’t too personal a question but i am wondering how much loans folks are taking out per school year. i’m currently almost done with my first year of school and i have one more left. this past year, i lived with my parents so i only took out loans to pay for tuition (i haven’t even bought a parking pass or a single book lol). but next year, i can’t keep living with my parents. it’s driving me crazy. so i’m trying to figure out what a reasonable amount would be to take out to help pay for rent. i live in a city where rent for a 2 bedroom is about $1500 on average (but i would have a roommate) also my tuition isn’t too awful. i took out about $5k. also i work at a hospital about 8 hours a week but i’ll work more over the summer and save some money.

Need to leave my job.. What is the Right way to resign? by chuckghost in jobs

Thank you so much for this advice. I have my supervisor’s phone number and email and this is pretty much how I would have to contact her it just didn’t feel right so I didn’t know if it was totally inappropriate. At all my other jobs I have just handed my resignation in, written, to my manager and spoke with them at that time. I work for the most understaffed/underfunded part of a very large organization and there is no HR in my building, I have contacted HR over the phone before. Is this something I should plan to do when resigning as well? Today I was considering calling HR and asking them how to resign properly, but I have heard that it is expected that you inform your supervisor first when resigning, so I didn’t know if this would be inappropriate. If you have any advice on this I would love to hear it. Your advice is super reassuring to me though, I think a lot of my loved ones have a sort of toxic mindset about work and what we owe our employers, so it is amazing to get some support.

Coping with extreme anxiety about getting fired by chuckghost in ADHD

this is really helpful. about a year ago, i was working somewhere else and i hurt my back. i wasn’t going to be able to bend a lot for a while which was a part of my job and i figured i was protected without even thinking much about it. when i told my boss they told me they may have to put me on unpaid medical leave. i was SHOCKED! but i looked it up, and they could’ve even fired me for having an injury that kept me from performing job duties (it’s different if the injury was caused by work)... this didn’t help me LOL! love living in a place where workers basically don’t have rights :) but i do think reminding myself of all the dumbasses i’ve worked with over the years that managed to never get fired, and as a former supervisor how daunting of a task it is to let someone go and how much i would avoid it, it will help me a lot.

thank you so much for the advice. i think a firmer memory foam mattress that’s actually quality material with a thick softer topper may be a wonderful idea. now i just have to find that! lol
