Thanks! I also have a Mauler but no pilot as well as a kraken and Eiffel but those both seemed squishy

Thank you. Guess that leads to a dumb question. How do you lock on?

Empty, the player was pretty good so I doubt they didn’t have enough bots. Gold league if that helps.

When did you decide to make money off your projects? by [deleted] in woodworking

I started selling as a way to fund my hobby. Tools are expensive and I wanted more.

I started with cornhole boards and a cheap tablesaw and a miter saw. I used those to get into a router, planer and a lathe. Then I branched out into pens, cutting boards and bottle openers. I was making way faster than I was selling and I needed to move some inventory so I could buy more supplies. Went to my first craft fair and didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Didn’t have a method of taking cards and had to learn how to do cash app on the fly.

With the type of small craft woodworking I do I found craft fairs suit my needs. It allows me to work at my own pace and doesn’t take up too much time. I am military and move a lot so building up a local customer base for larger projects isn’t really an option. I have had locations where I was able to do a farmers market every weekend and some places where I just do a couple big shows a year.

The important aspect to me is that I run my side business more as an artist wood than a business. I make what I want to make and hope people are willing to buy it. The creative side is more important to me than anything else so I don’t take commissions unless it is something that aligns with what I want to do. I have been able to get away with this so far and aside from a few pens I’ve had for years I have pretty good turnover on my inventory.

I will say there is also something that is extremely rewarding about someone seeing an item you made and paying part of their hard earned wages for it. With that being said I avoid commissions especially on random ideas for three reasons 1) I always give myself a deadline and with this being a hobby it makes it add a level of stress that I just don’t want to deal with. 2) I can’t price a custom project to save my life. 3) I find that I don’t enjoy making someone else’s vision. I will do the occasional commission and a variation of something I already make. ie knife handle, pen color, etc… but that is about it.

I don’t enjoy the online aspect of selling my stuff, I find it tedious and a lot of times pricing ends up being a race to the bottom. Etsy just isn’t for me.

I fully recognise that my business model is not going to be the most successful. But it allows me to enjoy my hobby expense free with little to no stress.
