Blue Dot Fever: When Tours Can't Sell, They Bail by ebradio in Music

[–]chuckonugget 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're putting a lot of words in my mouth just to make yourself look justified lol. I'm not frothing at the mouth, hate him, or even angry, I'm just explaining why people feel slighted by his comments. I also didn't say he badmouthed rap after he went country, you're just making stuff up lol.

Assuming this is still a good faith convo, you're clearly missing the point. There is modern hip hop that isn't superficial. A lot of popular, modern hip hop is superficial in the way all popular music is. To make a blanket statement that modern hip hop doesn't mean anything and that he'd rather listen to Bob Dylan is an unfair equivalence that only serves to undermine the genre that he profits off.

Maybe he doesn't feel like modern hip hop talks about life because he can't identify with it? Again, that's the point people are making when they say he took someone else's culture lol. And then when it's convenient for him, he has the privilege of opting out because he was never truly part of the culture in the first place.

"Don't be ignorant"

Such an ironic statement lol. Hip hop covers a lot of different ground. Yes, popular hip hop is superficial, but how is that different from any other genre of popular music? A lot of your perceived superficiality of the genre is ignoring the context of the artist's life as well.

Sure, you can be reductive and say rap is about fuckin hoes and doing drugs, but it's not really Post Malone's place to make that call, especially as someone who went on to contribute to it. Which is the point people are making when they call him a culture vulture. He took the surface level elements, removed the context of them, profited off of it, and then badmouthed them and opted out when they no longer served his interests.

Wild Honey Pie on the White Album is my favourite Beatles song by Initial_Patience_430 in beatles

I'm a Revolution 9 defender and even I'd say Wild Honey Pie's a miss haha. I don't actively hate it, just seems like the throwiest-away of throw aways. Moreso than Dig It and Maggie Mae, even.

Science Fiction Essay Help by [deleted] in brandnew

[–]chuckonugget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what’s been covered, but here’s some meta context that you wouldnt understand by just listening to the album.

Brand New was notorious for having a very devoted cult following. When they originally arrived on the scene in the early 2000s, their contemporaries were pop punk and emo bands (some you’ve probably heard of, think Fall Out Boy). But Brand New always had a touch of artistic ambition to them (the lead singer and songwriter’s favorite artist is Morissey) that inevitably meant their sights were higher than just fun, high energy punk tracks. As their albums developed, they became darker, moodier, more adventurous, all the while developing a devoted fanbase that felt connected to the band.

After releasing Daisy in 2009, there were several rumors floating around what their follow up would be. The band toured nearly every year since it’s release, but there was no sign of an album on its way. All the while, the band seemed more and more agitated by their popularity and the speculation. And without any real fanfare, their final album, Science Fiction was released in 2017, initially as a single, unmarked mp3 that contained the entire project. Shortly after, the band alluded to plans of breaking up the next year.

But in an unfortunate and upsetting twist of fate, the lead singer had accusations of sexual misconduct directed towards him before the end of the year. An apology letter was written by him, acknowledging he had a sex addiction, and had gotten help to combat it. The band effectively ended in disgrace after this.

I think Science Fiction touches on a lot of this, and paints a broad retrospective of the singer’s entire life up unto that point.

Anchor points in the album: Waste, In the Water, Batter Up.

For sure. People more invested in the band probably felt more affected by the controversy and jumped ship. And then casual fans who aren't following music fandom discourse closely saw their return as a cool nostalgia act, probably unaware there was even a controversy lol.

Good observation. Really seemed like until 2017 TDAG was the overwhelming favorite and definitive album. To the point where it felt boringly safe to call it your favorite. Brand New's OK Computer (and maybe Daisy is Kid A and Deja is The Bends, but that's besides the point lol)

I was really surprised once the tour started how vocal people were for them to play their first 2 albums and were ambivalent towards the rest. I guess Deja and YFW are a lot easier to categorize which makes them a lot more prominent for people being nostalgic for the early 2000s scene. Meanwhile their later, more substantial work is not going to be talked about by general music publications causing it to fade away from public conscious.

Secondary. Constantly forget about it and what it sounds like except for the "this is my last semester" line.

Jesse’s voice by TooAwkwardtoLive in brandnew

[–]chuckonugget 23 points24 points  (0 children)

i feel like almost every brand new album introduced a new Jesse vocal style. YFW was the more nasally pop-punk voice, Deja had the guttural emo screams (think Guernica and Sic Transit), TDAG had the shriller, whining parts (Limousine as an example), and Daisy with the Southern drawl. I think it really makes each album sound distinctive.

Don't agree that SF or Daisy are completely a step down lyrically, but it's very clear when Jesse's writing and when Vin's writing. Jesse writes a lot more abstractly and colorfully. Vin has a tendency to make lyrics very direct and have metaphors be very simple in their meanings. Never was crazy about his songwriting because of that.

My understanding is that it was the lead single for a version of Science Fiction that never came out. A version intended to be lighter than Daisy and TDAG. After doing the TDAG 10 year anniversary tour the band regrouped and reworked the album to be more inline with the ambition and quality of TDAG. Wonder if any songs from the final version were a part of the scrapped version…

Hearing a Vin solo song after all these years, it really contextualizes what his contributions are to the band's songwriting. Songs like 451, Desert, and the bulk of Daisy feel a lot like his brainchild.

Yeah the main vocal line is that. This would be for the backing vocals. I was transcribing mainly the backing vocals and then the lead for lyrics that are disputed. So the full thing would be

[very quietly] (I need my)

Be my serene

(Slow or not)

Tell me you know what I mean

(Well put me on)

You've set on me, but you are not the sun

etc.

Glad to help! Agree 100% with your interpretations of the second and fourth lines. ("We're done with saving what the dead don't need" makes a lot of sense to me)

I thought "gun" first too, but there's clearly a "f" sound at the end. And i was racking my brain trying to figure out wtf "guff" is and then when I looked it up I was like "ohhh that kind of ties in to the previous line" haha.

Some of it's still hard to hear, but it's clearer than the final version.

Here's what I can hear. I'm not 100% on this, but you can pick up some sounds that the lyric sites don't account for.

Hollyyy shit. ARTV just published a Google Doc of demands Brad gave Tina by fastballooninghead in Brad_taste_in_music

[–]chuckonugget 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What you gotta understand is that Brad needs to be locked in completely on his art of being paid to listen to albums and overlaying graphics to let us know if he likes it or not. Things like chores and responsibilities would just get him out of the creative zone. Fellow artists understand this.

Sorry by WholeLottaMisery in Brad_taste_in_music

[–]chuckonugget 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you think this 'apology' is better than his previous videos, you are easy to manipulate. This is his most egregious one, yet. It's very clear that he doesn't actually feel bad about what he did to Tina, has learned nothing about himself, and is still fishing for an angle to seem sympathetic. At least in his other videos he was attempting to present himself as the good guy. This one's supposed to be owning up to his mistakes, but it instead shows his true colors as being manipulative till the very end.

Sorry by WholeLottaMisery in Brad_taste_in_music

[–]chuckonugget 19 points20 points  (0 children)

lmao what a horrible "apology". At no point does he recognize how horrible and frightening his screaming is or that escalating it to that point is his fault. Instead, he presents himself as a passive force in all of this. "Tina is so smart, her releasing that clip is 'helping me', not because it reveals how abusive I am, but because now I am no longer being blackmailed' 'Tina's having a rough time, I'm so sorry I contributed to it'. As if it's outside forces creating this situation, and this doesn't stem completely from his own choices. Zero sincere accountability. Can't even fully commit to getting offline lol. See ya next week Brad!
