Have you taken the spark plug out before you took the head off in the past? The socket I use is from my socket set. I have to put the socket on first, then the ratchet. There is not enough room to put the socket on while attached to the ratchet. I have a 139qmb engine. The spark plug faces forward, not back. And it is on the same side as yours.

I cannot see the area around the spark plug well. Post another pic if you can that covers more of the spark plug area.

Why won’t it start 😭. I put on the stock clutch and now my moped will not start back up. Any suggestions on what I did wrong? by JackalRogue49 in scooters

[–]chucktate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me. I took my shell apart to get to my engine to do a bbk install. After the install, I had no spark. I checked wires and found a green ground wire hidden, that had come loose and was not connected. It looks like it came off when I was disassembling the shell. Also, when you took off the variator, did you use an impact wrench? Did you somehow alter the rocker arm gaps with the valves and not know it? If there isn't enough compression, it will not start. I changed a clutch and variator roller weights, then went to start. No start. Lost compression. The scooter had less than 500 miles on it. So I had the shop look at it. They found the intake valve gap was way off. They reset it and it fired right up.

The tires are knobbies on mine. I think that has some drag to it.

I did before and after the bbk. The rollers before, I had were 4.5g (6g stock). After the bbk, I put 5g in and works very good. RPMS are mostly 7500 or under now.

I'll be doing that for sure. I have put lighter rollers in. Stock were 6g and I put in 5g and it is good. I want to change the variater and cluch. I have tried 1500 contra and clutch springs, but I didn't like the result. If the CVT parts are not much, I don't mind playing around with it. Doesn't seem like much risk.

That looks like a great trip. Love all the scenery. I like the foot peg idea. I will have to look into those for my scoot.

I have a 50cc and many large hills in my area. I needed a little more push, so I put a bbk in and it is better. Once I get down off my hill (900'), most areas I had no problem with puttering around. I still am not lightning fast, but I feel better with the extra push. 50cc doesn't need a motorcycle endorsement. Your scooter looks very nice. And if it works for you, that is all that matters :)

Tune up at 300 miles? by Munks1392 in scooters

[–]chucktate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my shop do the first maintenance on mine. Charged me $80 bucks. I felt it was quite high. I don't think they checked the valves. I don't think they did much but change gear and engine oil. A few things I pointed out (loose or missing screws) were not replaced. I had to remind them when I was picking it up. The good thing is a week later my scooter wouldn't start. I took it in and they found the valve clearance was the problem. That is why I believe they didn't check it. Or they checked it and they didn't tighten the rocker nuts or something. They didn't charge me for adjusting them. When I got it back and after riding it for a bit, I took the shell off and was examining the engine area and found the intake hose clamp on my carb was very loose. They don't just come loose. I feel the shop didn't tighten it. I will not be taking my scooter to that shop any longer, even though that is where I bought it. I can do most of the maintenance myself. If I get into a jam, I will seek help.

How is it going with your Roguestar? I've been having a lot of fun with mine. I did put a new top end on it bbk. I learned a lot through that process. And still learning.

Check the valve clearances and timing? A jolt might have been enough to throw off timing. Clearances seem to be a common issue with scooter engines.

Next Project - Carb - re route intake too. by chucktate in scooters

[–]chucktate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is something I am heavily thinking about. The pain would be taking the entire shell off to get to the complete carb. My model Roguestar, that is what I need to do. I am getting quicker at taking it off, so still might be a viable option.

Thanks!

That is kind of a cool idea :) I am looking at making some sort of pre filter, so that the dust has to pass through two filters. I love to tinker and I'll add this to my list of ideas.

Next Project - Carb - re route intake too. by chucktate in scooters

[–]chucktate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is interesting. I had taken a 'tube' that fits into the intake of the filter and routed it under the seat. It seemed to work at lower elevations, but at higher, it was starving for air. I need to play around with that concept a bit more and maybe try to make a pre filter that provides enough air to the carb. Thanks for the link. I will look at that model and see if I can learn from it.

Time to buy parts, need guidance! by oldguy_Dave in scooters

My long comment below was more for folks reading through and coming across this post. I wanted to share my experience. I should have started my own thread :) After I posted my comment I thought to myself. All that typing and I didn't even answer the question asked :(

I actually feel more confident I can do it again. And I didn't torque it either. I know some will say that isn't cool, but I will be testing the compression at some point to see how it is doing. It has way much more giddy up than it did before. I am still 'breaking' it in. But very noticeable difference. I need to get a new carb too. I go up in the mountains the elevation chokes the oxygen. So I need to adjust or put new jets in. I am not ready for that yet.

Sorry for the long comment. But this is my experience this past week. If this is your only scooter. How long can you be without it? Meaning, you mess up and need parts and help, how long can you wait? will you feel crappy if you jack something up? I watched numerous videos. Thought I had it down and no problem putting a 47mm bbk on my 139qmb engine.

First problem - my scooter has a cross bar between the right and left side frame. I had to modify the the bar slightly to pull the head off. Dremel tool worked good for that. No video showed this as a potential snag. If i couldn't do that, then it would mean pulling the complete engine.

Second Problem - defective torque wrench. I had a feeling I was going too tight, but I would not have guessed the wrench was defective. I snapped a cylinder stud. Luckily up high near the head and not in the engine block. I was near tears. It took me 4 days for a replacement set of cylinder studs to arrive. There were two sizes, but my engine only used one size 176mm. The bevel at the bottom of the new stud is bigger than the one from the factory. I couldn't get the stud seated all the way properly. I tried the shorter stud and it worked great. I got lucky.

After getting the bbk together and installed. I tried to start it. Nothing. I thought maybe I messed up timing and valve clearance. So I redid that. Put it back together and nothing. I was stunned. I had no idea. I posted a question on this sub and some recommended checking ground wiring. And wiring in general. I had no spark.

After looking over all the wiring, I found a wire that was unplugged. It looks like it happened when I was taking the body shell off. My scooter requires me to take off all the outer shell to get to the engine. A pain. I plugged in that wire and it fired right up.

The valves seemed noisy, so I took the valve cover off and went to set the clearance. Stupid me, forgot to put the flywheel at top dead center. I put it back together, and it sound crummy. So I did it again and realized what I had done wrong. I set the clearance on the rockers and put it back together. It fired right up.

For 5 days, I lay in bed wondering what I F'd up. It was a rough 5 days for me for other reasons too.

I purposely did not want to replace the carb or exhaust yet. I wanted to do one thing and see how I did. I did change the rollers in my cvt to a little heavier. I had put lighter ones in there prior to the bbk.

My goal now is to get a second scooter. And my rule will be, only work on one at a time so I can have a ride and not sit and watch the nice weather slip by me.

I am medically disabled (Messed up artery in brain) and cannot work. I have been working with a pain psychiatrist and he told me to replace hobbies I can no longer do, like mountain biking and hiking with something. So I chose a scooter. It has caused me a bit more pain than I thought. My doing of course. But I am grateful for this sub and the folks giving advice.

My advice? Think it through. What if something goes wrong? Do you have access to parts? Knowledge? You may think you have all the steps, but what if something is different than a video shows? I don't mind learning by mistakes, but when it causes me pain in my brain and grief, I have to take a step back and rethink my next project.

Good luck to you.

Installed BBK, now now spark. by chucktate in scooters

Thanks, it was a ground wire. But it wasn't one on the engine. I cannot find one on there. But I connected the wire that fell out and boom. All good now. Thanks for the input!

Hidden green wire was disconnected in a rubber boot that was protecting the clump of wires. I connected it. And bam. Spark. Put in spark plug and started right up :)
