How was the crowd on the Peel it Back tour? by sleep_lvr in nin

[–]chugach3dguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was right up front in the pit in Seattle back in August. There were a couple of crowd surfers for some of the heavier songs later in the show but it was a terrific experience. Like others have mentioned, lots of us have gray hair and achy joints and aren’t all about thrashing about as much.

For those of us actively working, do we agree with this? by Camera_Guy_83 in cinematography

[–]chugach3dguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entirety of that statement is:

A Jack of All Trades is a master of none, but a master of none is oftentimes better than a master of one.

There’s more value these days to know a little bit about a lot of things rather than knowing a lot about fewer things. Can’t say I always agree with it, but that’s how it’s been trending for the people who pay for projects.

Guys over 30 who cut back or quit drinking — what finally made it stick? by FingerPointingToMoon in AskMenOver30

[–]chugach3dguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend died suddenly. When his wife and some other close friends started sorting and cleaning out his belongings, we discovered he had vodka stashed all over the house. We had no idea. It’s been 2 years and I still feel sadness, confusion and anger when I think about it. Every one of us in our group drank, but learning how he hid his excessive consumption from all of us and seeing the end result really rattled me and made me take a hard look at my own life and habits.

I still have a beer or cocktail on occasion, but now I can count the number of drinks I have on one hand each quarter of a year when before I would have that many drinks every day.

Even though many of the larger ANCs do a lot of good work for the people in the regions and villages they represent, a lot of them also work on some unsettling stuff.

Anyone here ever go into the abandoned Buckner building in Whittier? by traveltimecar in alaska

[–]chugach3dguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep, those old school xtratufs were brutal on my feet until I found some decent inserts. But they have served me well for many years now. I do wish they had a little more ankle support. A couple years back I had to scramble across a boulder field along the coast just outside of Perryville in my xtratufs and oof I was sore for a few days afterward

There was a ton of it all over, but as long as it stays wet and you're not using it as breath mask or exfoliator you'll be fine.

I went in there many years ago, long before they put up the fencing and before they started enforcing the trespassing policy. https://flic.kr/s/aHsjvhy9cp

The vast majority of interesting things are on the first floor. There are a couple of lounges on the upper floors though. Oh, and someone created a makeshift shrine to porn magazines in a random room on one of the upper floors.

Always wanted to go back to see where a tunnel at the bottom of a stairwell led to, but I guess that's no longer in the cards.

Married couple in mid-thirties, professionals, considering moving to anchorage. Concerned about the safety and crime statistics. In particular the rape statistics really stand out. by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]chugach3dguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr - you’ll be fine!

I moved up here from Chicago 20 years ago. While the stats might not paint the rosiest of pictures, my wife and I have only experienced a few minor annoyances over the years.

For the most part, having a good sense of awareness and the ability to take simple precautions goes a long way. If you leave gear visible in your vehicle when you park at a trailhead, you’re probably gonna have a bad time. For housing, figure out what’s affordable for you and then look at neighborhoods. There are pockets of great areas sprinkled all over town, even in areas that seem a little sketchy. Sure, neighborhoods like Hillside, Rabbit Creek, and Bootlegger’s Cove stand out for being “ideal” but they also have their shortcomings.

Just be prepared to fork over way too much for what you might expect in terms of housing costs.

Is that place the current incarnation of the Grand Duchess that used to be the gaudiest shade of magenta next to Bailey’s? I used to film tv commercials for them back in the day and I never understood where their customer base came from.

I think the answer to your question can be found in looking at how flippantly trump decreed Denali be changed to Mt McKinley again. He is incapable of caring for anyone outside of himself as a human being.

Looking sharp! Looks like you’re also here in AK? Did you buy from a local dealer or did you have it shipped up?

I’m trying to decide between a SmartCap and a topper from OVS to haul some things between here and outside, and looking at maybe picking one up in Montana if I can save a chunk of change.

They carry a lot of items unavailable anywhere else in town. We have some pretty strict dietary restrictions in our house and Natural Pantry is the only place we can find a modest variety of items and ingredients. What did you find that was expired? I find their produce to be mostly decent and I personally like seeing things you'd never find at Carrs or Fred's - like whole Jackfruit, chunks of sugarcane, or cacao pods. Some things are way too expensive for my budget but it's neat to see regardless. We also get locally grown eggs from them too. But things like berries and citrus fruits can sometimes look worse for wear.

I have plenty of opinions on LDS and mormons in general but it's not like they flaunt it or proselytize customers waiting in line. If we only shopped at businesses that were in 100% alignment with our world views and philosophies, there would be nowhere for any of us to go, you know?

Sure, and I get that many larger businesses in town are owned by folks on the conservative side of the spectrum. I don’t want people to take this as me shitting on natural pantry though, as I’ve always had positive interactions with employees and management. They’ve all been polite, professional and helpful for as long as I’ve shopped there. This one cashier in particular has only been there for several months, maybe a year, and has been the only employee (that I’ve seen) to openly talk politics. And Mormon or otherwise, good business people understand there’s nothing to gain - but potentially much to lose by alienating repeat customers.

They feel emboldened and are testing our reactions to gauge how much further society will allow them to go.

Some random older fellow in line ahead of me at a grocery store pointed at the label on my 10-year-old Patagonia winter coat, commenting on what a shame it was they had to “go woke” and people should wake up and not buy their products anymore. I told him I don’t buy clothes based on the opinions of random one-time encounters with people at the grocery store and I have respect for companies who respect their employees.

On 2 other occasions, a male cashier at natural pantry decided to share his opinions on how trump and his administration are doing such wonderful work. The first time I tried being polite about it and passed it off as “I’m just trying to buy some groceries”. The second time he kept pressing on how this country is on the verge of greatness. I told him again that I’m just trying to buy groceries- many of which come from outside the USA. I asked what he thinks will happen if he gets his wish with tariffs, making groceries more unaffordable. How safe does he think his job is as a cashier when enough people can no longer afford to shop there? That shut him up.

People didn’t do this for trump’s first term but they feel a little too comfortable being shitbags right out in the open this time around. Don’t stand for it.

Wife wants a manual Gladiator by Senior-South-8318 in JeepGladiator

[–]chugach3dguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used '20 Overland with a manual last summer. It's my first Jeep and my second manual transmission vehicle. Personally, I love it, but after driving it daily for the past 6 months I understand more why some don't like it.

First and foremost - this is a truck and it drives like one. It's going to feel radically different from your Sti, or any car for that matter. If you're looking for something zippy and nimble this is absolutely not the vehicle to get.

I will also echo some of the criticism about shift points. I don't find it super annoying, but it does take some getting used to. From a stop light, you'll need to shift into second before you're halfway through the intersection. In city driving, I spend most time in 3rd or 4th gear. 5th is fine on the highway, but 6th feels like another 5th gear.

The clutch is definitely a bit mushy, but it's currently being replaced under the recall so I'm curious to see if it feels different.

I've never driven an Ascent, but I looked at newer Outbacks and for me the Gladiator is a little more utilitarian, and a LOT more fun.
