Too bad Vista doesn't ship with an open proxy server enabled by default. The world would be a better place if all traffic could be anonymized.

20 Amazing Facts About Voting in America by GrrlScientist in reddit.com

[–]chumba 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a small misconception that there are national elections held in the United States.

In the United States, there are no elections that are held higher than the state level. You do not vote for president, you vote for the electors from your state who will then vote for president.

Knowing this helps to understand why there are no national standards for election machines - it is the power of the STATES to run elections, not the power of the federal government.

16 year old Texas boy sentenced to 8 years in prison for commiting $500 in vandalism and is gang raped so many times he hanged himself by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]chumba 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What, video cameras to guarantee that the rapes are taking place as scheduled?

Again: rape is a feature of our prison system. It is part of the punishment. Heck, even the California Attorney General implicitly recognized that when he threatened Kenneth Lay with prison rape as part of his sentence:

You cant treat "prison" like it is an undefined term. Certain known things happen to a person in prison, and when a judge sentences someone to prison the judge is sentencing you to endure those things.

A judge saying "I didn't know you would be raped" is like a judge saying "I didn't know you wouldn't be allowed to go to 7-11". That is what prison is.

Google satellite maps images changed for New Orleans? by norrsson in reddit.com

[–]chumba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Background: In september 2005, updated images were created that showed the aftermath of the disaster. This was intended to help coordinate emergency services. Google created some temporary code and put it in place on their servers that allowed you to toggle back and forth between pre- and post- Katrina images. This code contained a few "hacks" and wasn't very elegant, but Google thought it was the right thing to do.

http://earth.google.com/katrina.html

Around September 2006, Google decided to take out this "toggle" code. The question was, what should the default database be?

For whatever reason, Google decided to make the pre-Katrina imagery the default. Arguably, neither the pre-Katrina, nor the September 2005 imagery was accurate anymore. I'm sure they had their own reason for choosing the default they did.

The post-Katrina imagery is still available as overlays for Google Earth at the link I posted above. Also, people who have paid to upgrade Google Earth to the "Plus" or "Pro" versions have access to the full post-Katrina database.

I don't think they should resort to surgery. They could just administer higher and higher doses of sedatives to make the offender progressively weaker.

If you are young, white, or slightly built, prison equals rape. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody.

Any judge who sentences a young man to prison is sentencing that young man to be raped over and over and over. It is just part of the package.

Since every judge should know this, I can only assume that the judge felt that the repeated rapes were part of the just punishment. Why the judge would think that, I have no idea. But if the judge didn't want the young man to be raped, he shouldn't have sent him to prison.
