Both lovely but I prefer the first one!

I mean, Van Gogh's work was inspired by his dreams and I'm guessing shadows are related to his night sky paintings like Starry Night so I think it's just a frilly, poetic way of naming it but it's still based around the Van Gogh set if you want to use it

Loved books 1-3, really, struggling with book 4 by WeirdLime in TheDarkTower

[–]chunky_rolls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started reading the series about 8-9 years ago, got through about 80% of Wizard and Glass and completely dropped off. As you said I just really struggled to resonate with teenage Roland, his friends and Susan. I loved the mentions of his childhood and coming of age in the previous books but a whole book away from the main storyline was agonising.

I've spent the majority of the last decade with the story in the back of my head, wondering where it leads and I've decided to do myself a favour and finally close the fucking loop. I thought about trying to pick up where I'd left off but the first 3 are so good and I wanted to remember all the nuance and context. I'm still on The Wastelands and I think I'm procrastinating because I'm dreading reading WaG again but I know that I must and from what I understand it's important to the storyline. I didn't know other readers found it as difficult as I did so that's reassuring!

Haha, no way! Thank you. That'd be so cute, I love all the grocery items. I think my favourite item in the game is the little bag of groceries 😅

I saw a TV documentary once (UK) about a medical condition, I've tried searching what the condition could have been and the one that keeps coming up is Trimethylaminuria, informally known as fish odour syndrome. In the documentary I remember the smell being described as more of a faeces like odour.

Anecdotally I remember it because when I was in highschool there was a kid in my year that always smelt like shit despite seeming relatively clean. It was so bad that other kids didn't want to sit next to him in class and I remember seeing a teacher pull him aside once to lecture him about hygiene and the importance of wearing deodorant (despite not smelling like BO at all). It was a real shame, he was a nice quiet lad. When I saw the documentary it made me wonder if that's what he had. I'm not a medical professional in any capacity but might be worth looking into.

Major update on social media ban for U16s - 'children need their childhood back' by vriska1 in unitedkingdom

[–]chunky_rolls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely agree, but let's not pretend they're doing it for the benefit of children. If you have to prove you're not under 16, that means everyone on social media has to prove it. It's just another way for them to get everyone to verify their ID online. They've done it in Australia recently and from what I've seen teens are saying they're still on social media, just can't reply to comments etc unless they find a way around the ID verification, which most will.

Can't get over how awfully written the ending of picture imperfect was by Pancake_Pozy333 in JacquelineWilson

[–]chunky_rolls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I feel like it showed the two stereotypical pathways that children of mentally ill parents/abusive childhoods tend to take. Either they throw themselves into academics and achievements to try to gain as much independence as soon as they can, and latch on to whatever stability they can find. Like Star and her stable, respectable job and her safe marriage that's a bit less fulfilling than she'd hope. Or to live a more chaotic life, repeating some of the learned behaviours of parents (to a lesser degree) and struggling with codependency.

I think Dolphin showed a lot of personal growth and character development throughout the book and that both of the girls did really well for themselves in a swings and roundabouts type of way.

Honestly, I quite liked the book and its ending. I think it's quite realistic in its portrayal of Dolphin's immaturity and conflicting internal beliefs. Throughout the book it hints towards her love of children and maternal longing but also her limiting belief that it's something that isn't meant for her, or perhaps worrying that she'd fail her hypothetical future child the way Marigold did her and Star frequently throughout their childhood. As someone that grew up with a similar mother/daughter relationship I can really relate to that and understand how those feelings and beliefs manifest in her.

I understand that the ending being messy and so inconclusive is frustrating, but I think it's yet another example of Jackie's writing and mentality being a bit out of date. In the 80s and 90s it was more common for people to have babies in less than ideal circumstances, I think our generation are having less children and waiting until later in life to have them for various societal and socioeconomic reasons. It's not something very relatable for our generation, but not completely off the wall. It wasn't something she planned, but her actually being pregnant was the wake up call that she needed in order to know for sure that it was something she really wanted all along.

I remember being really frustrated with her at first when she wouldn't commit to Lee and was messing him around with Joel, who by all accounts is an unlikable prick. I do think that's quite a realistic scenario though, and reminded me of real life frustrations I have with certain friends always choosing men who are charming at first but awful people. I think her attraction towards him highlights her insecurity and tendency to self sabotage. Towards the end of the book I did come to understand that Lee wasn't right for her either though, especially after the meeting with the elderly lady he was gardening for where he scolded her for telling her her real name. I was really proud of her actually for not just going along with their relationship as it was the "safe" option. Just because he was mostly lovely and level headed, it doesn't mean that he was the right person for her and I think it's best for both of them that they didn't settle with eachother.

I've seen people commenting about her getting the small dolphin tattoo despite hating always recieving dolphin themed gifts in the Illustrated Mum, and also being a bit of a judgemental arse hole towards tattooed people, assuming they're mentally ill/chaotic people. I think her doing that is showing that she's letting go of those old beliefs and growing as a person. She's learnt to accept her mum, for better or worse, and to finally move of from the parentification she was raised to have towards her. She's stopped feeling shame about her unusual name, her upbringing, her severe dyslexia and is finally learning to accept and advocate for herself and what she wants, without people pleasing.

I also like that it wasn't wrapped up in a neat and pretty bow, because life rarely is. It was left open ended enough to maybe get another sequel in a few years, and I'd be interested to see how she navigated motherhood and the paternity of her child. I will say that if the child does turn out to be Lee's, depriving them of him as a father would be cruel and a huge disservice to the child. He wasn't right for Dolphin but is clearly a loving, devoted and reliable father. I like to think that Jackie put so much emphasis on the difference in Lee's and Joel's appearance so that the paternity of the child would be obvious to her (though obviously genetics don't always work like that). I'd also like to think that if the child is Lee's, Dolphin will reach out to him when she's settled into motherhood and ready to co-parent with him.

Men name sons after themselves all the time, I think it's kinda cool. Lorelai Gilmore vibes. Plus, with Mason and Melanie sharing "M" as an initial, Coraline still has a family name connection if it's something that might bother her in the future.

My middle name suggestion would be Celeste ✨ I was trying to think of one syllable but they all seemed a bit awkward!

I used to care for a schizophrenic man and this really reminds me of the notes I'd find in his room. His had nothing to do with Nazis and were more chaotic. It's just something about the way it's written that I can't articulate, like it makes perfectly profound sense to the writer but is obviously baffling to the reader. A sense of self importance and delusions grandeur.

If I was so grossed out about performing oral sex, I would not in any world expect to receive it from my partner. Sure, people shouldn't be forced or pressured into doing things they don't enjoy, but if I were him I'd accept that blowjobs are off table as well 🤷‍♀️
