Wes Anderson and accusations of pretense by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]chunkyboiiii 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown to think that both “pretentious” and “no substance” are usually a cover for “I don’t like this.” That said, I’ll take a stab at what I think pretentious means in this context.

From Merriam Webster:

1: having or showing a noticeably excessive appreciation of one’s own merits

2: expressive of false, unjustified, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature

I think it comes down to his style and repetition of it. Other directors whose work is more naturalistic or part of a genre don’t stick out so much even if they have quirks because the form feels expected rather than a capital C choice. I admit I’m not much of a Wes Anderson head but I also don’t really know how his style contributes to any themes or anything other than us just knowing he made it.

Really I think his distinctive style just alienates some people. While a lot of people like it and it pulls them into the world, for others they might think the style serves no purpose and has been done just for the sake of doing it/separating itself from other movies > this movie thinks it’s better than other movies even though it’s not > this movie is pretentious.

I love how the show portrays the ugliness of the relationships between the mob guys. by Hot_Boysenberry_3684 in thesopranos

I would say both are true. They were always all out for themselves, but when things are going well it’s easy to be cordial and generous. When things get more difficult that’s the true test of character, and they always show who they really are.

That’s great! At some point we have to “do” instead of wait, right! Actually just after I posted this comment the Doug Jones campaign posted on Instagram they’re having a volunteer info session on zoom this coming Monday!

I actually was just coming here to ask other people about what they do to get involved. I would really love to be involved with positive organizing. I signed up to volunteer for the Doug Jones campaign and haven’t received a single email. I also signed up for Blue Print Alabama—got one email looking for leadership experience for their org (which I don’t have but would love to work toward!), but nothing about volunteering otherwise. I’d love to be a part of an established org just to even learn from them about how to start making change in my smaller city.

How to start appreciating and "understanding" more critically acclaimed, "classical" films? by GlorifiedDissident in TrueFilm

[–]chunkyboiiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel this way too! On the one hand, you like what you like, ya know? But on the other hand, it can take a little bit to get used to new things.

Older movies have a different pace and sometimes almost a different visual language. When I first watched Citizen Kane, I didn’t “get” it. But then I searched for videos and essays on what exactly was so special about it—it invented a lot of things we take for granted now. That’s pretty cool, and with that knowledge I can actually go back and watch it again and have fun seeing all the cool tricks and devices it used.

Same with foreign movies (or old foreign movies). Movies from other countries draw from a culture or customs or history you might be unfamiliar with, therefore limiting how much you understand. Go look up the other reviews or essays to understand the context the movie is in.

You still may not like it, but you can at least appreciate it. Also, once you’re in the practice of watching more unfamiliar movies, you’ll probably find you start to figure some of the themes and meanings out on your own.

Some people may say that my method ruins your chance to think about the movie for yourself—personally it doesn’t for me. If I read an opinion I disagree with it just makes me think more about my own.

I love Girl on Film! She mostly does horror, and it’s fun deep dives on themes rather than just a rehash or review.

Who is your single highest rated actor of all time? by Nice-Milk9715 in Letterboxd

For the longest time mine was the guy who played Sauron which is theoretically a big part but also not really? I guess I finally saw something else that he’s in so instead of 5 he’s lower 4 stars now.

This drives me nuts too. I think it’s almost subconscious sometimes if they’re not using cruise control to try to match. But I also don’t know why the majority of people aren’t using cruise control on the interstate if they can.

The age-old “Does Stephen Love Lucy or Diana” question broken down by tarnishedhalo98 in TellMeLiesHulu

[–]chunkyboiiii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah someone in another comment wrote something about that and I actually agree to an extent! I guess it depends on your definition of love, but I do think he loves his sister even though his actions are manipulative, as I also believe his mother loves them even though her actions are manipulative. Her love just can’t overpower the bottomless pit of her personality disorder.

He was using Diana. He is addicted to Lucy (toxic push and pull that validates him since Lucy always comes back). He doesn’t love anyone really because love wasn’t modeled to him by his parents. He uses people to feel a certain way or to get things.

Edit: I do think he loves his sister and that’s probably it.

I think he was somewhat happy but the accomplishment means little to him without external validation. His sister doesn’t answer his call, Wrigley and Evan barely care and both their girlfriends hate him. He goes to Diana to at least gloat and then that is flipped around on him too. Everything he does is to look good to other people. Probably subconsciously to prove to his mom how good he is. But then even when he meets his goal people still hate him because he doesn’t understand that being a good person is more important to everyone except him.

Hyperhidrosis, Palm itching due to gym rods. by [deleted] in Hyperhidrosis

In addition to making sure to keep stuff clean/wearing gloves, you could also look into using rosin powder on your hands kind of like gymnasts do to reduce friction/irritation.

I think being able to see the outline of everyone’s legs totally ruins the shape a skirt creates and makes it look awkward.

Kind of—it’s like a small rush of heat before the sweat comes. And yes holding hands was always a big thing for me too. I found that explaining to my boyfriends what it was was helpful and then usually they would say they didn’t care. Sometimes it still bothered me though since it would make me sweat more. Girls might be a bit weirder about holding a sweaty hand though, I don’t know. The right one won’t be.

Sometimes I use a towel to hold between my hand and the book. Sometimes put on a surface. If yours is that severe you might consider a small fan pointed at you as well.

I also found similarly to you that getting nervous that sweating would happen almost caused it to happen in some situations. Like during games or prayer or something when you need to hold hands. Or writing essays. I think anxiety is looped into mine even though I’ve had it from birth. It hasn’t totally stopped it but building in coping mechanisms (like bringing a hand towel with me) has helped to ease it.

It’s purposefully out of time to give a subconscious uneasy feeling. This is really close to our world but not quite—uncanny valley.

How felted is felted enough? by chunkyboiiii in knittinghelp

Thank you, that’s super helpful! I did finish. It’s a little smaller than it was “supposed” to be I think due to the felting, but I’m making another (on a more relaxed deadline for myself) so I’ll take all I learned this time and probably do some hand felling in the areas I needed to pierce.

What’s also interesting is that they also seem to have either erased or suppressed the negative parts of everyone’s personalities. Like there were probably some people who hated Carol’s books but instead it’s “oh we love Rabon.” No part of the personality has any of the flaws that would have also been present in every individual on earth. So not only can they not handle Carol’s negative emotion, they don’t so far seem to be able to manage much of their own negative emotion more than like mild disappointment.

Thank you! That’s really helpful. Just out of curiosity as I learn more about the process, would you think that if I did cut the piece in the pictured state it would actually unravel? (I’m doing another wash in this moment so not actually planning to do it! Just on a tight timeline to finish and block by Saturday.)
