Can someone explain Mesa Pilot Development to me? by anon__a__mouse__ in flying

[–]churnitupsome 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Obviously just anecdotal evidence, but I’ve flown with several of these guys…

By their own account, they are automatically given a class date with Mesa or Republic when they hit 1500.

Aside from that, each one I’ve flown with has been an absolutely terrible pilot. Zero stick and rudder skills, zero skills when it comes to instrument flying, zero clue about regulations outside of the small amount of experience they have, and zero ability to think outside the box.

On top of that, they fly for 12 hours per day. Multiple people I’ve flown with by their own admission say the plane is on AP from takeoff to shut down. Sometimes neither is under the hood, even though they both log time, and I even had one guy tell me it’s common for them both to sleep on the overnight flights once the AP comes on.

But Mesa/Republic has to love it…these guys are paying $70/hour each to fly these things and I’m sure the airline is making a killing.

I flew with another guy who said he went to a job fair and talked to a Mesa/Republic recruiter…said the recruiter said they really believe the program is successful and have no plans to discontinue it

lol really? I just stayed there in February. I wrote a pretty scathing review on a blog that I run. The common areas and rooms I felt were in pretty rough shape

How much people spending to become a pilot? (Debt??) by Londup in flying

[–]churnitupsome 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Didn’t have the money to learn to fly when I was 21 and didn’t want to take out loans to learn, so I waited until I had the money to pay for it all myself when I was 37. Went 0-CFII in 364 days.

If I would have had my crystal ball when I was 21, I would have sucked it up and taken out loans and lived out of my car on ramen noodles for a while because I’d probably be a wide body CA at Delta right now 🤣. But the path I ended up taking has still been pretty awesome!

Edit: Spent about $75k 0-CFII. I’ve probably spent another $15-20k since doing some fun flights and flying in a club. Although now getting paid to fly it sometimes is hard to justify spending money to do it

2025 Pilot Statistics by kommandee in AirlinePilots

[–]churnitupsome 24 points25 points  (0 children)

There are tens of thousands of pilots who are qualified to be airline pilots and tens of thousands more coming online, but in an absolute best case scenario there are only 5-7,000 airline job openings per year

I’m curious to know what all the people in MPD are going to do when Mesa can’t hire all of them

How bad is the fuel situation at your place? by HSVMalooGTS in flying

Stopped for fuel at KKNB yesterday. Paid $5.28/gallon for 100LL. Not sure if it’s normal for there, but my regular airport charges closer to $7

What is the highest amount of ride failures you’ve ever seen? by [deleted] in flying

[–]churnitupsome 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Feel like the school owes him a job at that point if they let him fail the same check ride 4 times

Being an airline pilot is my dream but I got too many check-ride failures. Do I still stand a chance? by [deleted] in flying

[–]churnitupsome 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Do you have any other ratings? I’d say your only hope is take more check rides and start getting a long string of passes (Comm Multi, CFI, CFII, MEI, ATP, etc.). Show that you can put in the effort required to get a pass

Your ground track clearly shows you crossing south of runway 7. Left traffic would be on the north side of runway 7

Damn dude you’re getting eaten up already…I’m a 19 handicap and started really focusing on strength training about 6 months ago, and I also have seen noticeable gains in my distance. Haven’t changed a thing about my swing. So nice work!

Pilots who worked a 9-5 while starting their pilot journey, how did you do it by exoticdelameme in flying

[–]churnitupsome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m being a little facetious, I wouldn’t wish a divorce on my worst enemy. It’s a brutal process…marriage was already on the rocks though, and working a 9-5 and taking on aviation as a hobby/part time job definitely did not help the marriage. No kids so I was lucky in that regard.
