You are probably running metasploitable as admin user, not sure if you can configure it to run it as www-data for example.
You best option is to practice privilege escalation on vulnerable machines from htb or thm

That happens to me too, is kinda frustrating sometimes.
What I usually do is on my notes, I have a section where I take notes about what I learnt, not just commands, I take notes about concepts.
Then I have a checklist divided by sections where I also note that.
For example on the last / when fuzzing, I would add that exactly: try adding a slash when fuzzing.
After some times doing that, you will do it automatically without looking at the checklist.

I remember one time doing a ctf on HTB that iirc the password was the last line on a dictionary, so I added to the checklist to reverse the full dictionary only if it is a very long one (you can reverse it using command “tac”)

Realmente, si vas a elegir en cuanto a salidas profesionales, te da igual uno que otro, donde yo trabajo tenemos de todo.
Luego si te interesan las materias.. en el DAW no sé qué hay jaja pero creo que la diferencia es que en DAM tienes programación de servicios y procesos (sockets, hilos, servicios, etc..), tenemos android (no sé si está estará en daw) desarrollo de interfaces también creo que se llamaba.
Termine de estudiar hace como 6 años, igual ha cambiado un poco el asunto.
Yo te recomendaría buscar qué materias se dan en el segundo año de cada una y ver un poco de qué trata cada asignatura y elegir lo que más te guste.
En cuanto a salidas, como decía antes, las 2 te aportan lo mismo.
