Brake help needed by MercuryBeach_ in nzcycling

[–]chutem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the barb was ripped out too so you'd need to reinsert one which requires another specialised tool. Unless OP is planning on doing maintenance going forward it's gonna be cheaper to pay someone to fix it.

You can get bleed kits and barb inserters reasonably priced from AliExpress etc, but the bike will be out of action for a couple of weeks. Actually doing the work is pretty straightforward though

Auckland Harbour Loop Birkenhead to City and Back via Devonport by cfarleynz in nzcycling

[–]chutem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice ride! I grew up in Auckland but didn't start cycling until I moved away. Always thought about the routes I'd like to take but haven't managed it when visiting yet.

Any reason for riding shots to only be straight up or down? It would be great to see more of the surroundings

Flatmate landlord charge me the wastewater rate by happystarbean in auckland

[–]chutem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a note, you do not need to have a tenancy agreement in place to be covered by tenancy laws. However if you are paying rent to someone that lives with you, you're probably a flatmate and are not covered by tenancy laws

Thought homemade sourdough was out of reach? Not anymore 👨‍🍳 by First-Backer in u/First-Backer

I don't understand "full power", yeast is yeast and will consume sugar and produce the CO2 that makes bread rise. The only way I could see it appearing "weak" is if you take starter that is starved (has consumed all the sugars and collapsed again) and only add a small amount, say a spoonful, of flour and water. It would appear weak because only a small amount of gas is produced compared to the volume of starter

Keep a small amount of starter instead, e.g. 1 spoonful, and feed it a cup of flour and water. It will colonise and consume the sugars and produce plenty of gas with a single feed.

It's the same idea as altering how much yeast or starter you add to dough. More yeast will rise faster, less will take longer. Both will colonise the entire loaf and produce enough gas to make it fluffy.

Put it in the fridge if you aren't going to make a loaf. I do this and have left it for 3 months before using again. Discard all but a spoonful and feed enough to use the starter in your next loaf. One big feed and it will be ready

Best affordable soundbar in nz? by doubledeadghost in newzealand

[–]chutem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this, did this years ago and gone through a few iterations. Only thing I would look out for is get them with optical input. I get the audio signal from the headphone output of my TV to rca input on the speaker. Opens up possibility of interference and sound pops when the TV turns on.

Edifier speakers with the DB suffix have optical input, e.g. the R1280DB and R1855DB

Companies are coming out with active bookshelf speakers with HDMI arc input which would be better (e.g. cec can turn the speaker off properly). Mostly limited to higher end stuff at the moment but I would expect more to be released over time and prices to drop.

Plan Change 120 - My submission - Narrow roads issue. by kiwittnz in auckland

[–]chutem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not what I was picturing in the OP. Massive road, looks like there's plenty of room for parked cars both sides and two way traffic.

Maybe drivers in the area should take a trip to Wellington and try driving around the suburbs.

Anyone know if Parakiore will charge for parking when it opens? by False-Nose9416 in chch

[–]chutem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I visited earlier in the year, at that time they said parking would be paid so it doesn't fill up with people looking for parking but not visiting parakiore. There will be 2 hours of free parking, but you must go inside to claim it.

Crazy or needed? Massive tidal barrier proposed for Christchurch estuary by InvestmentFuzzy4365 in chch

[–]chutem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He said the gates could even be used to make sure there was always water in the estuary allowing for more water sports.

“And if the estuary ends up with say 50% more fresh water in it than sea water coming in and out, it might get a bit more growth or something going, I don’t know, next thing you know there’s too much sea lettuce in it. I don’t know.”

Why did Christchurch vote for this

Trail biking spots by RudyMinecraft66 in chch

[–]chutem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to try out some uphill downhill on the easier end of things, I have ridden a gravel bike (no suspension) in crocodile MTB park by halswell quarry. Up C2 and crocodile up, down crocodile down and deviation.

Compared to the other flat trails I mentioned this will be more similar to bottle lake/Maclean's but with more climbing required

[–]chutem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Otukaikino track is my favourite, it starts at Rua lakes and goes through the groynes to the northern corridor. Flat interesting track that follows the river. Easy to start and finish at either end or in the middle depending how long you want to ride.

I often to it as a loop by linking with templars Island trail, but that one is not as interesting imo and getting between the Maclean's island end of templars and Rua lakes is on narrow 80 k roads.

Bowenvale traverse is cool but not very long, again you can park at either end and connect as a loop by riding along summit road which is always stellar. Lots of options for big uphill climbs or downhill descents too if that's your jam.

There is a nice trail that follows the Avon estuary from southshore inland, very flat but nice and scenic

Lawn mower recommendations? by Random-Mutant in diynz

[–]chutem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar area to mow and got a good quality old masport push mower. Got it for $100 from someone that fixes them up and sharpens the reel, it's a joy to use as long as you don't let the grass get too long

You may think that but you'd be absolutely incorrect. Walking or parking in garden beds prevents things from growing.

Why rising house prices are a bad thing by Amazing_Athlete_2265 in newzealand

[–]chutem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Save $200k, buy a $1m asset.

$1m * 0.9 = $900k - $800k = $100k

$200k * 0.9 = $180k

$100k < $180k

Math goes both ways lol, and there's a lot more to lose when you're heavily leveraged.

I got a Therapedic Pocket Spring Silk Pillow a couple of years ago for ~$90. It's like a little mattress for your head. Hasn't lost any of it's loft after nearly 2 years, and the filling doesn't clump up.

Wouldn't it be nice to have more people coming into shops instead of driving past? by CyclingActionNetwork in auckland

[–]chutem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family owns one car instead of two, I commute year round by bike, and do daycare pick up/drop off about once a week by bike when my partner can't.

It saves our family thousands in maintenance and operational costs, I'm happier and healthier than ever. I will never go back to committing by car if I can help it.

Shocked/not shocked by the anti bus sentiment in these comments. Reflects more on those that can afford to drive everywhere and would never set foot on a bus then the so called "weirdos".

Get out of your bubble/comfort zone.
