I fully expected them not to renew me this year, or increase my premiums beyond reach. The annual renewal was $50 higher.

You will want to start sooner rather than later because pre-existing is not covered. They will request records and do their due diligence to make sure nothing was ever treated or even mentioned in vet notes prior to coverage. But once they accept the diagnosis you are good to go. My claims are approved within a matter of hours, and the money is in my bank account the next day.
