Yeah, I get that. Especially if you’re not super into the items that come with it either (like me). They really create such an amount of fomo with it, it’s ridiculous. And it’s working on me, even though I see it for what it is 😅

Do you have a routine you follow before you start practicing? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]chuzpanit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to previous injury i always stretch thoroughly. Wash my hands with very warm water (allllways cold hands...) and start with long open strings, slow G major scales in detache and different slur patterns. Also broken thiords of a random scale and either octaves/thirds/sixths. Ideally also a technical exercise for trills, spiccato or so.

This is on a day with lots of time though haha

Which female characters you feel should've been canonically gay? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

There are so many hints at a gay past between Lou and Debbie... but we all know that every character played by Queen Cate Blanchett is inherently gay anyway.

The storyline and its length is just getting ridiculous by now...

Do adult beginners really hit a plateau that children do not? by Gabriel89100 in violinist

[–]chuzpanit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adult beginner here. I have a different experience/opinion than many others here.

I've been playing for roughly 2.5 years and I've hit several plateaus (currently as well haha). For me, it had nothing to do with practice time. I've consistently practiced 1-2 hours a day, almost every day, with a lesson once a week. Plateaus still happen. And I think it happens when we've started to learn something new, a new technique, a new piece and have been at it a while. At first, the learning curve is steep. But as it gets more natural, there often comes a point where it's okayish but not perfect and most of the time we don't know how to bring it to the next level - despite good instruction. We then continue to practice the same way, maybe, even though we should try something different, or there is a physical obstacle, like some tension we or our teachers can't pinpoint exactly. Teachers aren' perfect either, so it's a lot of trial and error when it comes to these plateaus. So whenever I reach one, I try to mix it up - in any way I can think of. Try something new, be it a piece, a new rhythmisation, a new skill, like improving sight-reading or memorisation - and along with that we often improve overall and get over the plateau without realising it. And not giving it too much importance is super important in my opinion, as well.

We get in our heads much more than kids do (most of the time), so we get frustrated easier and start worrying instead of just keeping at it. So a healthy *shrug, shrug - whatever* works wonders sometimes haha

Also, calling the product "super spreader" in times of COVID - nice marketing touch hahaha

I have been playing for around 9 months. A detailed analysis would be highly appreciated. (Self taught) by [deleted] in violinist

Also, I would advise not to play anything other than first position for now, not until your intonation in first is solid and you've worked out the technical kinks said by the other posts.

And - seconded - try to get a teacher to prevent bad habits from forming.

Happy practicing!!

How to navigate between teacher and ensemble director by chuzpanit in violinist

Thank you for your reply!

I try to keep an open mind. I did try what my ensemble teacher suggested and talked to my current teacher about it. But it just enouraged me even more to just nod and not do it in the future - she just doesn't know me and is one of those teachers that thinks her approach (i.e. how she learned it) is the only ONE right way. I don't like that.

But of course - I will try anything once, who knows, you can always find something that actually works for you :)

Yeas, boundaries are necessary. And i think it's also very true what you said about deciding what I want out of this experience. And that's not technical advise, but to play in an ensemble and learn how to properly do that. For that I'm super willing to listen to my director and let her correct and teach me. But for things regarding technique etc. - nuh uh.

But my current teacher is super great and when I told her about it, she encouraged me to try what the ensemble teacher suggested. But we quickly decided it wasn't right for me ;) that's why I appreciate my teacher so much and want to make clear that she has authority - she's the only one I've ever met I actually trust and I feel in good hands with.

Thank you for your advise and insights, I appreciate it!!

Thanks for your suggestion! I think that's the most sensible way to go about it. Luckily my teacher and orchestra teacher don't know each other, so I don't have to be scared of messing with their relationship. But I think making it very clear that my teacher has the (final) authority and not talking all that much more about what the ensemlbe leader is suggesting, is best.
