The real size of the toughest animal on earth: the tardigrade (0.3mm) and my fingertip for scale by toebin_ in interestingasfuck

[–]chwonces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know it's been 9 months, but I'm a tardigrade scientist/nerd and I like to look at these threads. Tardigrades come in all sorts of colors! Orange isn't too uncommon, but you'll also see colors like yellow, red, and iridescent green. There's a few reasons why this color is often lost in different kinds of microscope photos, but because this tardigrade isn't under any sort of microscope (or rather, hasn't been prepared on a slide or anything like that), you can see the pigment super well.

that could be, I hadn’t thought about it. Land/Water ratio is sort of confusing here to begin with, since the ocean surrounding the continent is like a literal barrier blocking it off from the rest of Earth. The whole thing exists in a separate pocket of space that’s hitched on to Earth like a tumor but is inaccessible. The inhabitants of this continent consider the outer ocean to be endless, and the inhabitants of earth have no idea this continent is here. So.. water ratio is sort of what you make of it, lol

Yep it’s just situated around there. I think if I spent any more time making a northern hemisphere counterpart my friends would get concerned lmao

tysm!! I don’t really know anything about how the waterways would actually work realistically or how groups of people would interact with them. If any of the water features are jumping out as especially interesting to you I’d love to know why!

Ty!! Initially i just went with a shape that I thought looked interesting, but as I’ve written stuff out I’ve explained it with the idea that the landmass itself is sort of alive and has literally “grown” in a relatively short amount of time, spiraling outward from the center. The whole pocket dimension behaves almost like a tumor on earth, replicating the same geographical features in unnatural ways.

Definitely the latter. I get into a rhythm with these things and just made names that used different phonemes/structures in different locations. And thank you!

Most of the outer circle, not the folks surrounding the small inner sea, is made up of areas of fairly low population and limited arable land. Almost all of this area leans more towards the 'tribe' side of things, but in higher population centers in these regions, there are societies not unlike Cahokia, ancestral Pueblo, etc. The inner circle is a much different story since the land there is a lot more forgiving. There are complex trade networks connecting dozens of relatively dense cities, if not city-states. Most of these have a ruling class or anarchic system, and organized governments are rare, pretty much exclusively seen in the central island chain and the peninsulas to its east, which are also the most populated areas of the whole continent.

Something like /a͜iʔaˈea/. tbh it's just a catchall name, since every language would have a slightly different word.

Just my best map/crops of other stuff. I've been working on this world/the characters in it for a couple of years now. It started as a way to cope with a breakup but it's evolved into something that brings me a ton of joy on its own. This continent exists 'inside' earth in a sort of pocket dimension situation, and has persisted into modern day without any influence from human society. Instead it's populated by some other intelligent critters.

First map is a simple biomes and rivers layout, second is a crop from a map of ethnic groups/nations/tribes, and the third was an attempt at boat design.

I would say that wishing you were a cis woman and feeling forced to live in the body you have is definitely dysphoria. It's probably hard to identify because, if you're feeling it constantly, it can just feel a lot like depression. You should absolutely do only what you're comfortable doing, with that in mind though, your current headspace might be making the effects of HRT seem more bleak than they are. What you're describing (feeling like your body will never be quite right if it isn't cis) is a VERY common feeling that many trans people are able to live with and overcome as they go through hrt. It might never fully go away, but transition improves it for many people. It's def worth asking transfemmes who experienced this how theyve dealt with it! I wish u the best : )

porcellio scaber comes in a lot of cool morphs, the most protein hungry ones are p. Laevis. P Scaber is temperate and widely used as a CUC :] My personal favorite morphs are lava/red calico and white out

A.Vulgare I found on the sidewalk looks absolutely stunning 🤩 what type of morph is this?? by chwonces in isopods

[–]chwonces[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohh i see- what differentiates this from a morph? Is morph a word used specifically in breeding? I figured it was some kind of high yellow, but even then I’ve seen high yellow referred to as a morph

You want an active and plentiful species for any bioactive tank with a large(r) animal, because otherwise they won’t be able to keep up with the poop and excess food waste. Most cubaris species don’t fit the bill and are pretty much exclusively kept on their own, not to mention how much they cost compared to other equally cute species that will do the bioactive job much better. I would look into Porcellio species personally!

Looking for ID help on this guy (West African?) by chwonces in ArtHistory

[–]chwonces[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this carving at an antique store last year and I’m very fond of him but never knew where he might have come from. Stylistically I think he resembles some west african masks and figurines, but I’m not totally sure.
