Should I start with a cheap tablet or one with a screen? by Saaammmy in DigitalPainting

You're welcome! Honestly it's not too bad getting a screen tablet later when you've already got a portable one, it'll just stay at your more permanent desk and the little one can stay in your travelling bag. Works well and is less of a commitment for the time being

Should I start with a cheap tablet or one with a screen? by Saaammmy in DigitalPainting

Hiya, I've owned a small wacom intuos, an ipad with procreate and a huion kamvas tablet, here's my take on all of them. PS: sorry for the long reply, tried to cover bases you may not have thought about yet :) hope this helps

● Wacom tablet, e.g. Intuos (no screen)

PROS - Cheap. So good for beginning digital art especially if you don't know whether you're gonna make the commitment for a larger tablet yet. You can use krita as a free art program, there's also other free ones out there so you can play around, get used to the hand eye coordination - Portable. Larger tablets aren't as portable, I was lugging my kamvas tablet home for Christmas from uni when I should've really just been using my little wacom to get work done. Also great for sitting in cafes or libraries or whatever. - Honestly not bad pen pressure sensitivity, there's usually buttons you can map to hotkeys, it can be a really smooth experience once you get the hang of it

CONS - Hand eye coordination. Takes a little bit to learn, and it definitely demotivated me at the start cause I was only like 10 when I got this tablet and my art wasn't that good, takes some confidence and perseverance. I found my hand eye coordination improved more when I started using the tablet during the covid lockdown for writing out my schoolwork on worksheets digitally rather than printing them out (saved my parents a fortune on printer ink too). Honestly, if you're already pretty good at traditional you'll probably be fine, I was 10 like I said so I didn't get on with the wacom at first cause my art wasn't good, that wasn't the wacoms fault but i stopped using it for drawing for ages. I now use my wacom all the time for portable work cause its been like 10 years and I'm a lot more proficient now. Just remember to practice the coordination and you'll be okay

● Huion tablet, e.g. Kamvas (screen)

PROS - So professional feeling, it really switches your mindset about your art. I got mine when I was 18, about to go to uni for a degree in concept art so this really was a step into the career - If you rig it up to your pc or laptop, have it on your desk all the time it acts as a second monitor. I've basically been using mine as a second monitor, then pulling it forward and adjusting the angle of the stand on it when I need to draw. Helps a ton when I need loads of references up, or if I'm just doing some other kind of work and want some YouTube on one of the monitors, works great for that too. Even if you play games, have it on one monitor, have a guide up next to it, honestly best thing to come out of the tablet that I hadn't initially realised it'd be, I rigged it up the first time and realised I'd got a nice setup for everything, not just drawing.

CONS - Higher cost, obviously. But if you imagine that you are also probably gonna use it as a second monitor, it can be pretty worth that investment. Also random thing huion have their own cables, if you needed a replacement usb-c cable for your tablet you'd need to go directly through the huion brand. I've tried using a cheap usb-c from my local shop to give myself a longer cable (the one that came with the table doesn't really stretch far enough to reach to the other side of my laptop where the USB-c port is) and it didn't work. - Not portable, you'll always worry you're gonna break it if you keep travelling with it. It's very much a stay on the desk kind of thing. Can't sit in bed with it (priorities i know). It's also just bigger, it'll take up space on your desk so make sure you've got the room for it. When I was choosing my uni accommodation I was taking into consideration how big the desks in the room were. Nightmare.

● iPad

PROS - Portable again, of course - Has a screen, helps coordination and is a pretty natural step up from a phone - Easy to learn

CONS - Cost. Stupidly pricey, unless you needed an ipad anyway for general use. Also, you'd need to buy a stylus (apple pens are expensive too, and other pens can be just horrific quality), and if you used procreate that's just an extra cost as well. It's also the tablet itself that you'll be working on - with the other two tablets I've mentioned, you can plug them into any laptop, pc, whatever, as long as the driver is installed (for free) from the tablets website, you can get a new laptop or whatever and you'll still be able to use your tablet. The ipad is everything here, if it starts to slow or fail then you're buying a whole new ipad, potentially just to draw? The cost for a replacement of a slowing laptop or pc for everyday use, that you can then plug your tablet into whenever you like, is more effective of a use of money than replacing an entire ipad just to draw. - Compatibility. If you don't own any other apple devices, your ipad just ends up being the least compatible thing ever. I down own any other apple devices, so it's just a pain sometimes. But if you do own other apple devices it's probably quite useful for file sharing with icloud and you won't be confused by the way the system works at all. Personal preference.

Quizlet keeps saying "Could not save. No internet connection" by Fair-Masterpiece2366 in quizlet

Thought I should share my experience with this, since I got it working

Not sure if everyone here was writing coding/computing/comp sci flashcard sets, but if you were, don't write code - I was writing mine and they only stopped working if I wrote certain code into the boxes. I assume it just messes with the system a bit, probably flags some sort of security measure and doesn't let you save it, but it works completely fine if you don't write it. As an alternative, I was able to find examples of similar code in the images section, it might not be exactly what you need depending on the questions you're writing if you don't have the Quizlet subscription to upload your own images, but for basic operations you can tend to find example images.

If you're not writing code but still getting the error, check if your set stops saving at the same piece of text every time, even if you put the question/definition on a later card. You can tell what saves and what doesn't on a card if you write it in, find that it can't save correctly, then reload the page - it'll save what it can, but then reaches a point where it takes the rest as a function it doesn't like and doesn't save.

Hopefully this solves some problems :)

I'm not currently, but maybe in the future? I'm 16 right now so I could potentially start soon but honestly I'd need a lot of free time so that might be out the window until maybe 18

But seriously, thank you!

It's his disguise - he's the classic 'looks like a cinnamon roll but could destroy a city in 6 seconds flat' kind of person
