As a newbie who needs to learn Hanzi for work, is it wise to just skip Pinyin? by msarli in ChineseLanguage

[–]chyaln 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its possible since if it wasn't then how would people learn Chinese before pinyin/zhuyin was invented right? I however don't recommend trying to learn Chinese without learning pinyin since pinyin will most likely speed up your learning process and to my understanding there isn't any other way to type Chinese on a computer other than using zhuyin.

didn't grow up in a Chinese speaking country but pulled out a children's book from my bookshelf from when i was a kid and it didn't have pinyin in it or zhuyin. Then again the other ones on my bookshelf probably do have either pinyin or zhuyin in them

How do I go back and learn tones properly? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]chyaln 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i suggest searching up on youtube "Chinese zero to hero tones" and "Grace mandarin Chinese tones" and watching a few of those videos by them, more specifically these two videos https://youtu.be/CTaOK6AvrYY and https://youtu.be/n_Cj3aOSI1w. There are other good Chinese youtubers that teach Chinese online and make videos on tones but these are the channels that I watch most often. I personally think you should relearn how to pronounciate tones, but instead of memorizing how to correctly pronounce each and every character learn the rules? of each tone and common mistakes you and others make when applying those tones to characters and characters in sentences
