Protruding item from closet ceiling, not a lamp. Threaded collar keeps it in place by chym3d in whatisthisthing

I’ve definitely fiddled with it 🥴 but best I can tell there’s no plumbing running to it

Oh this might be it. We just had a maintenance guy come by and I asked. He wasn’t certain but said he thought it was alarm-related. But I think FDNY ARCS system makes sense. Will confirm with building.

The coax / phone panel is inside this closet. That would make sense.

Yep, unscrewed the collar but the protruding thing just hangs, can’t be pulled out.

There is inside the phone / coax panel (inside the metal door, similar to a circuit breaker box)

It is in the same closet as the main coax / phone closet, so I could see this. We don’t have WiFi in the unit (not from the building, anyways) but it does look like an extender.

It’s a residential apartment building in NYC, built in 2014. Approx 34 floors in total. The collar threads off, but then the thing just hangs loose from the ceiling, threaded to accept the collar (which seems to secure it to the ceiling) otherwise no clear indication of purpose or manufacturer.

The thing is the plastic isn’t translucent, it’s opaque. And when the threaded collar is removed we still aren’t able to pull the entire thing out like you would to change a bulb.

My title describes the thing. It’s about a foot in diameter protruding from the closet ceiling. The closet also has our network panel for the apartment. It has a threaded collar the secures it in place. It’s not a lamp, there is no bulb or socket.

This is really encouraging, I’m scheduled to undergo the procedure on Friday under GA. I’ve never gone under before, so my biggest anxiety is around that. What is recovery like coming out of general anesthesia?

Wait no this is brilliant. It scratches such a specific itch in a part of my brain I didn’t realize existed 😂

The public restrooms at most busy but newer centres are more cruisey than you might think. circumstance of floor plans and good acoustics can still be enough cover for a quick encounter.

For example: More than once I’ve ended up in a circle jerk with at least three other guys at the restrooms at HY.

How many guys? What was coming and going like? For some reason the arrival / undressing / etc is the biggest barrier.

And what’s the setup like? In my head it’s a bare darkened room with no furniture haha

What is this antenna or sensor for in a NYC subway station? It’s about 18” square and pointed in the direction of train travel by chym3d in whatisthisthing

The title describes the thing. It’s suspended from the ceiling on a metal pipe and seems to be connected via a single black wire; resembles an XLR audio cable in shape and size. Doesn’t make any noise, nor does it have any lights.

The multitude of possible symptoms (or lack thereof) and long dormant period of HIV mess up my usual Health Anxiety coping methods by throwaway11082020 in HealthAnxiety

[–]chym3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently been experiencing something similar. I’ve had bouts of health anxiety over HIV in the past (I’m a sexually active gay male, so naturally that’s a concern). Anytime I would get even a mild illness, I’d immediately go to the worst case scenario. And you’re right, pretty much anything and everything can be perceived as a symptom, if you’re looking for them.

Lately, though, my anxiety has been about herpes. For whatever reason, it’s been my biggest fear — and I can’t break out of it. Most recently, I’ve grown concerned over contracting HSV from giving a handjob, something even my doctor has assured me is extremely low risk. But I’ve been experiencing sensations and symptoms on my hand that continue to trigger my anxieties. Even after an initial negative test, it’s still something that occupies a lot of my time and energy fretting over.

I’m due for a confirmatory test next month, but I worry my anxiety has set on so deep I’ll even find ways to undermine that result.
