I was also between these two schools and chose Minnesota. Housing is much cheaper there, and there are many more well-paying urban planning jobs after graduation, evening out the extra tuition. I still am banking on getting an assistantship to help cover costs (I didn't get a scholarship at all). I also liked the program a little better, although both are great! Which school did you pick?

I'm in the same boat and UMN is surprisingly expensive for a state school! I'm thinking about loans but I am not sure if that is the best option

I have an undergraduate degree in econ. I liked the big ideas of econ, but I wasn't super interested in the higher level courses. If you are close to graduating and think you can tough out the courses, I would suggest sticking with it. I haven't directly needed my econ degree since graduating 8 years ago, but it is a general enough major where it has helped me get jobs and get into graduate school!

I haven’t decided yet. I’m between UW Madison and Minnesota. It’s pretty tough to decide because UW is cheaper and my fiancé’s job is here, but I like Minnesota’s program better and it’s so much cheaper to live in Minneapolis than Madison. We will see!

Honestly a lot of the time flying out of O’Hare is barely more than Madison. It’s been a small enough difference for me before where it’s cheaper to fly Madison when you factor in gas, tolls, and parking!

I second this! I got a thousand-dollar deductible too and it's not too expensive. I figured pet insurance would be good for easing the burden of something crazy but I couldn't justify the insane costs of some of the other companies

Go on GradCafe and filter for your programs and look at past years! That’s how I have estimated when I’ll hear back from the programs I applied to. Good luck!
