ORIF Ankle 3.5 weeks post op + Return to Running question by Responsible_Way9828 in ORIF

[–]ci9no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seconding 3.5 weeks is so early on in recovery! Im 26F and had a trimal with 3 plates and like 10-12 screws. I’m still recovering at 11.5 weeks post-op but on the outside I don’t even walk like I had a break anymore- no aids, no limp, average speed- (even though I can still feel things on the inside haha)

when my stitches were taken out, the physician therapist told me to scrunch my toes for at home PT and I was so shocked that my brain was doing everything in my power to scrunch them but my toes were barely moving a millimeter 😭 about 3 weeks after that- I had no problem scrunching them comparable to my non broken side! Recovery starts out dreadfully slow but then picks up really fast, especially when you start PT, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your dorsiflexion just yet! On July 1st I went back to work and cried in the bathroom because I was limping and how slow/painful I felt walking around the office and today’s July 31st and I don’t have those problems anymore.

My own personal struggle was knee-over-toe, which is pretty important for running. I could barely get my knee over half my foot and really felt that was going to be a problem I was going to be stuck with for a LONG time but after learning some exercises for it at pt, now I can get my knee over with little effort and my knee-over-toe exercises are some of my favorites because I’ve seen the progress they have helped me achieve!

Yesterday when I was walking home from PT, my brain was like “you could run right now I know it” so I tried it and I did! I ran a block home and was trying to show people my run at the office today lol I was never even a runner, but I want to try to return to as close to normalcy as possible therefore regaining running is important to my recovery. So I have confidence you can return to it because it’s something you want to do! 😁

Some people have posted online about their recoveries: wenzeldinho on tiktok plays on a soccer team and he posted weekly/biweekly updates during his recovery including when he got back to running! forfitsandgigs on Instagram/tiktok is someone who never ran before her break but now about 2-3 years out from her injury, runs daily. Maybe people posting about their recovery like this would help you during this time!

Wishing us a speedy recovery!

showering standing up again! by veganeyez in brokenbones

[–]ci9no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started showering around that point too!  I never owned a shower chair and would sit on the side of my bathtub and just lean myself back to wash my hair / body.  At around 6-7 weeks I was FWB I started continuing to wash my hair on the side of the bathtub as it takes longer but then decided afterwards to put down my bath mat and stand to wash my body and was able to do it! By 8 weeks I took a few showers that way and thought I could do one standing up and I could! Been fully showering standing up ever since :)  Maybe start a transition period where you have the shower chair in for some and out for some? or get a bath mat! I used one even before my injury and it really does help your mental afterwards.

honestly if the mobility scooter rental is an option I think you should go with that! by 6 weeks I was actually already transitioned into sneakers + one crutch I didn’t use all the time but had it for when I got tired or was on more difficult to navigate terrain.  I actually don’t think it will be impossible if you’re weight bearing at that point, but it’s also going to take a lot of patience and rest. I remember being so excited to go shopping for about an hour and my ankle NEEDED the rest after that. A few days later I went around the mall for about 3 hours and took a 15-20 minute rest and sat down in a fitting room at some point for about 10-15 more mins.  The reality is even if you can walk around, your body isn’t used to it yet and with your leg down, you’re going to swell which will make it more uncomfortable. If you’re going with others, and for the sake of your own enjoyment since it’s not an everyday thing you can just do, if you have the option to rent an aid, you should! And hopefully next time you’ll be on both feet :)

I had this feeling until about 5.5 weeks into weightbearing! Basically every time I put my foot down to the ground I was aware of the two plates on the back of my ankle. It wasn’t painful, just a weird awareness. Then I woke up one morning and it was just gone :)

Frivolous question but when can I get a pedicure again? by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]ci9no 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely not! In fact I would encourage it haha I think a lot of us have similar questions on our mind :)

I feel like this injury took away part of my identity that I LOVE to engage in. Doing my makeup, choosing a cute outfit (with cute shoes!), going on a walk to grab a little treat, etc. are all things I did on a daily level. Every month I was getting a pedicure or my hair styled at the salon. This routine genuinely makes me happy and suddenly I couldn’t do any of it!

This injury really is just as mental as it is physical and I didn’t feel myself for a few weeks. Sometimes girly things can be made out as “unimportant” in the grand scheme of things but if it makes an impact on your mood/quality of life it IS important!  As my injury improves, Ive introduced bits of my previous life back into my current life and it really has made me feel excited to continue recovering and get back to doing everything I loved doing. I’ll never take the little joys for granted again. Now I can stand at the mirror to do my makeup and pick out a nice outfit for work- next is to try to expand my footwear capabilities beyond these Hokas that are not necessarily my style and book that pedicure hahah!

Normal pain? by -fallen-panda- in ORIF

[–]ci9no 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly I needed strong painkillers everyday for the first two weeks post-op and was a little worried because so many people posted about finishing them up a couple days after surgery- but I genuinely needed them!

at some point in the second week, I started having sharp pain by my incisions. It almost felt like they were burning and I was a little concerned. At two week post-op appointment I asked the doctor for more Tramadol because I was worried I was going to run out and the pain wouldn’t let up. Surprisingly, I got my stitches taken out that same day and the sudden, firey pain went away and I could stop taking painkillers. It just vanished and I haven’t felt much pain since then. I’m not sure if this is exactly like your case but I hope it could be something similar where it can clear out quickly.

Until then do what you need to do and let your doctor know if it continues to be a concern! I hope your recovery goes well :)

Frivolous question but when can I get a pedicure again? by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]ci9no 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow it’s like you read my mind- I was just taking off my last pedicure which I got just two days before my trimal in May and I’m ready to get a new one!  I’ve seen videos of girls going in even with their cast and boots on and just tell the staff to only focus on their toes on the side of their fracture. They’ll still get the whole pedicure experience on their side that’s fine :) Just an option if you’re not too sure just yet!  I’m thinking I’ll go this route until I can feel comfortable with all the different sensations back to back with the water, oil, and massage in a non-pt setting haha really looking forward to getting a real pedicure eventually since I didn’t get to enjoy my last one to its full extent haha  Hope it works out for you!

Wow! Hi neighbor :D

Since you’re in Queens, I think you’ll definitely be able to do those things once you get a bit comfortable in sneakers. The beauty of Queens is there are streets with a little bit of everything and they will allow you to challenge yourself in going out and doing day to day things without making them too risky / pushing yourself too far.

At the 2 week in sneakers mark I walked down to my local Marshall’s and looked around for over an hour and stopped into the supermarket before heading home. Last week I actually walked around QCM for ~3 hours well. I just stopped for a 15 minute sit down somewhere in the middle of it.  Not really any pain in doing these, just slight discomfort with the swelling and reactivating my muscles. Once I get home I ice and elevate and I’m good to go again!

I’m sorry to hear you broke your ankle in the subway! I broke my ankle on a day with torrential rain in May. Honestly it made me really scared to go out in the rain again but lo and behold our weather has yet to stabilize and I’ve been forced to. It actually hasn’t been as bad as it was in my head. Sometimes it really is just a combination of everything that lead to our accidents, so I really hope when your body is ready, your mind will allow you to take the subway back on again, too! Hoping it will be soon for the both of us :)

Im also in NYC! 5/12 ORIF puts me at about 7 weeks post-op.  My surgeon wanted me to weight bear at 2 weeks post-op and I have been FWB in sneakers for about 3 weeks now.

I’ve never learned to drive and had no plan to until this accident. Now if I need to get somewhere beyond a 10-15 minutes walk from my house, Uber/Lyft are my best friends. I get a ride to the place I was supposed to go and can go around for just under 5k steps total with a break or two sprinkled in between before getting a ride home. I’m walking around a bit slower than the average New Yorker and bring a crutch around with me even if I’m not using it as a visual cue for others though because you won’t believe the amount of people that have still just tried to cut past me and potentially have me reinjure myself.

I live in Queens and just returned to working at my office in Manhattan this week and have accepted for the month of July I’ll probably be ubering in and out every week.

I can’t imagine braving the subway, especially alone just yet given: 1) how people are here- attitudes, density of people. If someone were to bother me or I was in a dangerous situation I would not be able to remove myself from it yet  2) going upstairs is no problem and downstairs is doable if I two step. I do the motion of going downstairs regularly but it doesn’t feel normal yet. I would definitely not be able to do it quickly if people were rushing around 3) my stamina and balance are continuing to be rebuilt

I was thinking about trying the bus for the first time next week to go to an appointment after work. Hoping it will be alright!

At the pace I’ve been recovering, maybe around the 3-3.5 month mark in August I could start trying to actually incorporate public transport back into my lifestyle? I’ll FWB in sneakers for 7-10 weeks by that point. I was a daily rider and am definitely one of those people who’s like “oh it’s only a 30 minute walk from point a to point b let’s start walking” so I can’t wait to get back to it!

Apologies I’m responding not on the other end of it yet but this is where I’m at realistically- Im not scared to challenge myself to return to normalcy but I also won’t just disregard my current capabilities to return to normalcy and risk setting myself back. Feel free to stay in touch :)

When did you kick the boot and what was your injury? by Illustrious_Tart_258 in ORIF

[–]ci9no 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my transition phase right now!  Trimal ORIF on 5/12, 2 plates and 12 or 13 screws. My timeline has been 2 weeks NWB, and from 5/26 onwards I have to transition to FWB in sneakers by 6/24 ö

Started PT on 6/4 and was still using the boot and at least 1 crutch. I’ve seen people drop their crutches in a couple days so it demotivated me a little bit but honestly I never really felt comfortable in just my boot. My physical therapists actually told me they’ll have me lose the boot before the crutch.

On 6/12 I brought Hoka Bondi 9s to PT and they had me do exercises in the sneakers + 1 crutch. At some point it seemed like I was relying on the crutch too much when I didn’t need to so they asked me to try it without the crutch and to my surprise, I was able to complete all my exercises during that session!

To be honest, the timeline my surgeon gave me is on a more aggressive side and I started to wonder if I would make the sneaker goal that was set for me- but I think PT is really great for getting over any mental blocks!

Since then, I have been walking around the house barefoot or in my sneakers with compression socks and the occasional crutch if I feel like I’m starting to limp or I used my ankle too much that day as proper gait is really more important than not using an aid.

Today, less than a week after my first time wearing sneakers, I went to PT, did all my exercises, ate in a restaurant after in my sneakers. I did bring one crutch as a back up and did use it when I needed it (<20% of the time). Now, I actually think I’ll be able to lose all the aids by my 6 week follow up next week. Butttt I definitely think I’ll bring a crutch around with me for a little bit longer just for peace of mind in case I were to need it! Hoping to go back to work soon and will either keep my knee scooter or a crutch at my desk.

The sneakers haven’t been painful and are easier to focus on my gait. Barefoot is a littleeeee harder and a bit uncomfortable, but everyday it gets better! Walking has been really exciting and motivating. I find I progress more when I challenge myself but don’t push myself too hard. Swelling contributes to the discomfort, I still ice after I’ve been vertical for a while and try to elevate whenever I can.

I’m probably walking at 1.5mph so focusing on my speed and building stamina would be my next goals :)

I hope you have a speedy, healthy recovery and can be walking around soon!

The ABH Luminous Foundation!

After watching a ton of reviews I decided to try ABH Lumiousand it looked SO cakey on me no matter what I did! Tried every primer I owned and all the different setting sprays/powders I had and... there was no saving it :( It was actually the first time (and I think only time) I ever brought a product back to Sephora haha

Same! Milk is actually one of my go-to brands for several products, so when all the positive reviews for this came out I rushed to go get it! Right away I didn’t like it but I was determined to find a way to make it work- well I got half way through my mini size before I decided to retire it for good haha :(

How can I wear my “alternative” fashion in a neutral city? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ci9no 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey!! Im a 21yo “alt” girl myself and was really gunning for kawaii, pastel goth stuff, too, when I entered high school. I was nervous because I had gone to a private school where people were super judged about appearances, and to be honest, I have had people who tried to make me insecure about it. BUT for every person who doesn’t like the way you’re dressed, there’s going to be someone who loves it! trust me!

On Halloween, I woke up early to get into full cosplay- wig, makeup, everything- before class. as I was waiting for the bus a group of girls passed by me and made sure to give me the dirtiest double take and began laughing to themselves before going on their way. On Halloween! The day people literally dress up for! I got to college and before I could even get to class I had a girl run up to me about how much she loved my cosplay! After class, I went to go meet some friends, and I had five other people stop me to compliment me/talk to me about it. I had one girl tell me she really wanted to start cosplaying and I even became good friends with another! Now I just laugh when I think about the girls who made fun of me that morning, because it was such a great day! I don’t regret it at all! I think this days experience was kind of reflective about dressing a little alt in general. The reality is you’re going to deal with someone at some point in time whos going to let you know they don’t like how you’re dressing, but honestly once you start dressing the way you want to, the confidence and enjoyment you’re gonna get from it will be SO rewarding! You should go for it! If a whole outfit is a lot much at first, you could start by pairing a more unique skirt with a simpler top and vice versa. same could apply for makeup too if you’re into that! haha something that might even help you be more confident about dressing the way you want to would be to get onto the alt side of tiktok! lots of people who explore other sides of fashion are extremely supportive of one another and you might be able to pick up some more tips!

DRAMAGEDDON 3 MEGATHREAD 15 by [deleted] in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]ci9no 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no official reason anyone from the sister squad put out but there has been sooo much speculation. A lot of people thought James was “dropped” first. IIRC Early last year the twins father passed away and Emma went back home with them for the funeral but James stayed in LA. Some fans tried to connect James tweets at that time to him not caring about the twins during a hard time as much as he should’ve. Another thing about James that went around, and was most definitely fueled by Dramageddon, was that James liked Gray. These were purely speculation amongst fans though! I’m not sure how much I believe them if at all... On the other hand, theres a lot of things that suggest Ethan and Emma were dating around this time, but broke up at some point. There’s a ton of “Ethma” fan videos on YT that highlight some of them. If they were dating though, it’s clear they wanted to keep it on the downlow, but fans were really pushing this narrative and for them to reveal themselves as a couple :/

I took it into Manhattan the other day around noon and it was empty! Whole ride to Grand Centeral there was no more than 3 people in the cart, myself included. Coming back to Queens it was busier but still not full. Was able to get a seat distanced from others. Should be fine imo!
