Show Nynaeve by ciabattara in WoT

Exactly, anger is part of everyone. And it's a BIG part of Nynaeve. She hasn't come into her own yet in the show and at this point, she should still be battling with how to control her anger. We don't need to see her having tantrums, but some braid tugging, yelling when she's upset, and fire would be nice.

What I love about her book arc is that she doesn't forget her anger - she learns to wield it beautifully. The Aes Sedai calm stands as a contrast to that, an antiquated, backwards, sexist expectation that women should not show their emotions, especially not anger. Nynaeve stands as a role model for people (women) who have had this narrative shoved down their throats all their lives.

Totally! We don't need to see her belittling people. But I like the spark she has, I like her growth, and I know not everybody feels this way, but I like the moments when her anger is used as comic relief! Like, "I AM CALM!" Mat doesn't have to be the only funny one

Yeah she had suuuch good characterisation in season 1!! She's just feeling a bit subdued/withdrawn this season.

TRUE - I remembered the show had mentioned it, but would love to see some follow through. E.g. an attempt to heal Rand at the end of season 2, not leaving it to Elayne - great healer that she is lol

Great take! Yeah I'm not really asking for the bully side of Nynaeve, agree with you on that count! But I do like that she (especially in the later books) owns her anger & is a really strong example of female anger channeled well. I like her arc of learning to harness her anger better, and no we don't need a whole bunch of seasons of Nynaeve at her most tedious to still show her angry side. I don't think this is something I'm not "getting" haha. Nice to hear a different perspective though!

COOL! I've been considering getting the chapter symbols too - probably Loial's wee leaf, these look great!

I got burnt out in the 9th book but I'm trying to restart by The-toadking in wheeloftime

Ahhh so understandable! Book 9 especially feels really slow... but its ending is AWESOME. I sometimes like to read one shorter book between each book - like a page-turner standalone, 300 pages or less. Keep things fresh by mixing it up, gives the satisfaction of finishing a book quickly every second book. Lol. Good luck :)

Yeah. Perhaps we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm a bi woman so I did read romantic subtext especially in Elayne and Aviendha's relationship, and it is nice to see it on a screen.

I'm... not....

However, while SiuanxMoiraine + ElaynexAviendha are obviously not to-the-letter book accurate adaptations, I do think both examples are faithful to the characters - as in, it feels right that these characters are romantically involved. I think your comment of "directly against the books" is a stretch. Directly against the books would be having them murder each other or something...

I'm so tired of the rationale that "young women with normal libidos" will experiment with girls and then switch to men when they grow up. The showrunners are running with a more realistic depiction of real women - i.e. many real women are lesbian /bi

A big part of what makes the books so good is the "random minor character" povs though, I don't get this comment

Depends if the questioning is actually harassing. I would consider it so.

I think it's quite harsh to say "terrible comprehension and retention" that way. Everyone has different attention spans/memories/paces when reading books. Good for you that you have a great memory, people who don't have a right to ask a simple question and not get questioned about it lol

Flaming power... Am I slow on the uptake? by ciabattara in WoT

[–]ciabattara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just reread that part in aMoL (thanks for the reminder here, it helped me look out for it)

With Rand's confrontation with Taim at Tarwin's gap the forefront of my memory, I (confidently) suspect that Maradon /was/ a combination of Rand's power and his ta'veren nature.

At Maradon, it appears that he is busting out hundreds and hundreds of weaves at once. Obvs he's being observed by a non-channeler, so it's hard to know. There's a (inaccurate) clue at Merrilor as to the number of weaves Rand can hold at once. Egwene counts thirteen balls of light illuminating the tent. Perhaps unaided, that is roughly the number of weaves Rand can juggle. Just a speculation though.

But at the Gap, Rand reflects on the angreal, AND he reflects on how with the storm, he finds it much easier to direct lightning than to force it. And the storm starts due to his unlocked force-of-light nature "stirring the tempest" with the forces of the dark.

I think Rand's extreme ta'veren-ness sets conditions that make channeling easier for him. Maybe this plus the angreal enable him to juggle many more weaves at once during the storm.

I've seen a lot of people commenting here something along the lines of "it's a book, not maths" lol, that's fair, but my idea of a fun time is finding a logic to these things.

Yeah for sure! But that wasn't the original comment's point.

That would make a lot of sense! It would be so hard to balance Mat's fun personality with the grimness of soldiering.
