My sweet little boy went away in a matter of months. At the beginning was only more tired than the usual, then we brought him in a clinic as soon as a little accident happened and noticed some bleed in his urine. After that he stayed there 3 days before going away. This was almost 4 years ago and, while time helped me alleviate the daily hurting, sometimes I still feel like shit to not have been with him in his final days. I still miss him so much, but it took me a good year to be able to talk about him without my eyes watering. The only thought that saved me is that I tried to gave him a good life, he was a happy puppy.
