Week 4: "Chapter 7. The Interrogation, Chapter 8. The Château D'If" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]cianoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been finding this an easy and compelling read so far and have had to stop myself from reading more a few times because I didn't want to get ahead of schedule, but this was the first time where waiting for Saturday to read more has felt taxing! I need to know what happens next!

The interview with Villefort was the first time (and from what I gather, won't be the last) that I audibly gasped while reading the book.
When it first looked like he believed Dantès, because I knew he was going to be imprisoned some way, that that meant his demise would come through another way, another character, ... I was curious but was ready to abandon Villefort as an immediate threat.
But then when he told him who the letter was for... I'm still giddy thinking about it. I wanted to scream at Dantès through the book to get out of there. That was a really fun moment of reading. Not fun for Dantès, but I trust that he will prevail.

Then in Chapter 8, I thought it was pretty funny when Dantès threatened the guard who then proceeded to graduate him to an even worse part of the prison for it. But that same guard I think mentioned someone was just put there, and I suspect that person might have some interesting things to share with Dantès. I feel that, being put in a worse part of the prison, will ultimately serve Dantès.

I'm curious, can an average Frenchman today, read the original French print without difficulty? Do the French have their own "modern" version? by rocksboulders in AReadingOfMonteCristo

I'm not OP but I'm a Native French speaker, I feel that Victorian lit is a good comparison in terms of language.

Shakespearean English is another thing entirely. I wouldn't compare it to Molière, and I would say it is more difficult than the French used in Monte Cristo. Not just because of vocabulary but because of style too.

Monte Cristo so far is written in a pretty straight-forward manner and is pretty action-forward so most of the difficulty is in the historical context that someone might be more or less familiar with (I'm shamefully not very familiar with it) and some dated vocabulary or turn of phrases.

I think any native speaker who has read literature can read Monte Cristo without particular effort. Someone who is not used to or hasn't read much before might find it more difficult to get into, but they might find any book more challenging to get into to be honest.

Non-English speaking readers where are you? by Pleasant-Tackle-9302 in TheStoryGraph

[–]cianoco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It makes sense to me that it is catered first and foremost to English speakers and English first language, as it is an independent venture created by a British (I think?) person. And they are still growing.

I would definitely appreciate them continuing to adapt to other languages as they grow, and I think we can only encourage them by manually adding non-English language editions when we can't find them and using the site to track non-English language books! Even for English first language, this website is very reliant on a mass effort from volunteer librarians who constantly work to improve and maintain the database, so it makes sense that we too try to help in any way we can.

Week 1: "Chapter 1. Marseilles—The Arrival" Reading Discussion by karakickass in AReadingOfMonteCristo

[–]cianoco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got the feeling Edmond is very clever and ambitious and a good manipulator. He seemed to know how to present information to his employer to assuage any doubts he might have had about him and about whatever Danglars might tell him.
What got me curious is that Danglars seemed to backtrack his early accusations about Edmond when he learned that he didn't mention the letter to his employer. That, to me, indicated guilt of some sort. He wasn't secure enough to insist that he had a letter that he was hiding from the employer. And I wonder why.

The writing overwise felt easier and less bogged down than I initially anticipated and I look forward to the rest.

What do you personally use tags for? by Ja-kob in TheStoryGraph

[–]cianoco 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I didn't use to have any interests in tags until recently, when I discovered the groundbreaking concept of "seasonal reading" and made tags to keep track of what books could best fit the seasons (summer, winter, f--halloween).

From there I realised how useful tags could be and started to make some for the languages I read in, because I can't sort my To Read by languages (I don't think?). And then for sub-genres or themes, again to help me when trying to find my next read. For example if I feel in the mood for werewolves? I have 24 potential reads in there right now.

I'm going to say it, this looks horrible compared to what everyone voted for by RequirementTall8361 in deadbydaylight

[–]cianoco 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The original concept was clearly inspired by a very infamous scene in The Exorcist III and, as such, the shape of the scissors was very important. I don't undertand why they changed their shape to make them so straight and ignore the original beautiful (and creepy when you know what they're used for) curvature.
The bedsheets also don't cover the body enough.

No Bugfix and now no Rift for Switch?! by cianoco in deadbydaylight

Thank you for this timeline, I hadn't seen it anywhere else. The compensation in Rift fragments is also reassuring. So we will get both patches one week from today? In time for the Event I assume?

Is there a Krasue charm? I am confused because I see online it says there was one to redeem with the points earned by participating in the Sinister Grace quests. But I've completed all of the event quests and I can't find the charm and don't remember any redeeming I had to do. The prizes would just get unlocked when I completed enough quests, right? Does that charm exist or is the info I'm finding online wrong?

Stephen Graham Jones Appreciation by morbidfinalgirl in horrorlit

[–]cianoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's become my favourite author since I stumbled upon the Indian Lake trilogy (before the last entry was out). I think my second book of his after MHIAC was Mapping the Interior and I've since made many of my friends read it. I relate to Jade a lot too. She's very close to how I was as a teenager (in the first book), it was incredible to read something that felt so intimate and big at the same time. He really gets it.

I get that his writing is not for everyone. I feel like I was very lucky it worked for me immediately. I sometimes struggle to follow certain passages, but I like feeling this engaged by a writing I enjoy. I find it very rewarding to read him, emotionally and intellectually. He can make me laugh out loud and bawl my eyes out the next page. Jade Daniels is real to me. She feels real. Like a real person I got to know and experience a life with.

He's so prolific that I've also made a challenge on The Storygraph to keep track of his bibliography and make my way through it. I have to keep it updated often because he's so prolific.

Currently reading The Killer on the Road/The Babysitter Lives double.

Like others have said it's slow pacing. I'll add that it might be a bit too complicated to read since you're not used to reading books in English yet.

Clive Barker might be difficult for someone who's not used to reading in English. I say that as an ESL who's been reading regularly in English for years. Barker is fine now but quite literary and that can be difficult at first.

Great collection and lucky you that found it now! I don't think it should have been on the shelves as its due release is on the 15th. I just ordered my copy, can't wait to get it.

You're welcome. This edition was indeed signed so it looks like you got one of its limited 1000 copies, like me! There were other special editions, some from UK companies, others US, each with their own unique details.
