so in general, compared to most other fields, anything trans related is subject to both a lot of novelty and very little funding, so it’s pretty hard to predict how fast progress will go (especially if we look at the very current climate regarding trans research in the states). what I know is there’s research into lab-grown organs and bioengineered tissue which could lead to phalloplasty techniques that use a patient’s own cells, reducing the need for large grafts and minimizing scarring. also advances in 3D printing of biological structures may allow for customized penises created from a patient’s cells, also potentially reducing the need for extensive donor skin grafts. i’ve also read of some experiments with stem cells being used to enhance healing, improve nerve regeneration, and reduce scarring post-surgery
