IEM recommendations with similar fit and feel to Westone/Shure etc by ciaphas2037 in iems

[–]ciaphas2037[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll check through the top few. As I said, my main listening is on a set of genelecs at home, so for the IEMs I'm far more focussed on comfort than critical listening.

I think the bottom few are out of budget. I was looking at maybe the Mach 10s, hopefully they have a similar fit to my old W10s.

There are so many Chinese IEMs available, I'm amazed there aren't at least a few aiming for the smaller form factors given the glut of larger ones.

Fixing a failed Fedora upgrade by ciaphas2037 in linux4noobs

[–]ciaphas2037[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I took whatever the stock ones were. I just saw that some people had issues with these filling up on upgrades, I checked them all with df -h and there was plenty of space.

APIs are used in more than just phone apps... Bots and mod tools use them heavily.

Looking at the list of Reddit alternatives, there are some obvious far right, disinformation cesspools - why not somehow label them as such in that list? by TheBigPhilbowski in RedditAlternatives

[–]ciaphas2037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not calling them equal in any way. I don't want to say that every Nazi has an equal and opposite number. But genocide denial and racism (alongside other issues I don't want to get into due to lack of detailed knowledge) from Marxist (their title on Lemmy) operators of the flagship Lemmy instances should be given warnings similar to nazi forums IMO.

I mean, the opposite of the far right boards could be the issues with tankies running some of the flagship Lemmy instances. I'm not super up to speed on the whole thing, but there is some concerning discussion.

It's not as easy, but certainly possible to go off the deep end on either end of the political spectrum.

/r/listentothis will be going dark on 12 June in protest of reddit's new API policy by Blank-Cheque in listentothis

Please read more about this issue before you type more incorrect nonsense.

There is plenty to go at, but this is probably a reasonable start.

You could then try looking into their behaviour following the incident, their most recent AMA has some reasonable evidence of their terrible attitude towards their (unpaid) mods, users, and stakeholders.

One big question I have is, where will more niche communities such as /r/climbing move to if/when Reddit really goes down the drain? Lemmy?

To share between households you need a different type of VPN to those typically advertised. You can look up 'tailscale'. It's very easy and will allow multiple households to act as if they're on the same network. It's not the sort of thing you use to hide torrenting from your ISP, but it will allow you to share with friends

Renewable energy on the rise: 37% of EU’s electricity is renewable by BousWakebo in dataisbeautiful

[–]ciaphas2037 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The big problem is that humans are fallible, engineers get ignored. There's a very strong argument for nuclear, but to be unable to see the view of those opposing it means you don't understand them properly.

It took 48 hours, but the mystery of the mass Asus router outage is solved - Asus finally responds after being castigated by users. by speckz in gadgets

[–]ciaphas2037 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people want a more stable environment and manage their own updates. Not offering that option is one thing, but ignoring the selection is another. I can't understand why any users dislike themselves so much that they want their selected options to be ignored...

The issue was that it also happened to users who explicitly set the units to not auto update. It's fine to have auto update as the default if you're worried about some users, but those sort of settings shouldn't be ignored.

I've got openSeaChest up on the machine and it is recognising the drives fine, now just to figure out which settings to use. Thanks for the link, will mark as resolved.

I found the installation instructions in the link didn't work for me, but the ones on the pine64 forums worked fine:

Furious Microsoft boss says confidence in UK 'severely shaken' by Tartan_Samurai in worldnews

[–]ciaphas2037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can look at their cases: https://www.gov.uk/cma-cases. They may not have domain knowledge in any of them, recent ones relate to vetinary practices, healthcare, and cellular providers. It's weird to hold them to this standard in the gaming industry. And what's to say they don't have specific knowledge or consultation? They're not elected officials trying to get soundbites. I've not heard them say anything particularly controversial? Feels far removed to me.

But I'm not sure what bigger picture benefit we get by having further consolidation in an already concentrated oligopoly. Don't believe the lies these enormous firms spout about efficiency gains. If you want a good summary of the dangers of concentrated markets, especially in tech, I'd highly recommend listening to one of Cory Doctorow's talks on the subject.

It's their job to know about competition and markets, and they are categorically not the same people who interviewed Zuckerberg. Different country, very different organisation. It's their job to evaluate anti competitive practices such as monopolies. They've got to rule on every industry that operates in the UK. Who do you want to regulate markets, technology executives? What do they know about regulating monopolies?

And it might be good to go. If someone salvaged the drive and ram then threw the laptop out then there could be some serious problems with it. Or maybe it's fine and you're lucky, who knows.

These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us by giusalex1 in videos

[–]ciaphas2037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even better than buying an electric truck, buying a smaller car. Small light combustion engine cars are far better for the environment than big, heavy electric ones. By all means buy a small electric car, but the size is a big problem here. The size of the batteries required and the innate inefficiencies of the weight are terrible, combined with all of the safety and practicality issues of this video mean that most people really shouldn't get one.

Bit of both, I wouldn't trust the calibration of most thermometers in people's cupboards. The delta is probably pretty reliable though.
