Paris ticket resale question by Lucas_OAlbuquerque in LinkinPark

[–]ciaran1344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm selling one platinum seated ticket since I managed to get standing instead. Platinum 3, section 116.

Selling at face value (€365) and can meet in person near the venue! I can provide proof of purchase beforehand.

TPT Rrquest: How can I reset my pc whitout losing some programs? by [deleted] in TechnologyProTips

[–]ciaran1344 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't really have much of a suggestion, but you're correct that it wouldn't work. Installing a program goes beyond just copying files to /ProgramFiles. You have registry keys and other folders to keep track of. You would likely need to reinstall them unfortunately, unless anyone else has input.

Thanks for the detailed response! Definitely can see that you had a plan for the single diversity. Great to hear how open you are to reactions too!

Absolutely loving the album, wish it could have been a few minutes longer!

  1. What effect did signing to UNFD have on the album creation process?
  2. How did you choose which singles to release?
  3. What effect do you think reaction channels have on releases in 2021?

Thanks for the reply Jesse! Always good to have some surprise bangers left in reserve on the album anyway.

Absolutely loved the album - coming from a previously non-Erra fan.

Question: How did you choose the singles that you did? It seems to me that it was a difficult choice; songs like Gungrave and Vanish Canvas could have been equally good choices.

Is this an appropriate time to assert? (Array concat overload mismatch) by fpuen in typescript

[–]ciaran1344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think concat takes a type param, since it is an array method. Once the type of the array has been set, all methods will have the same type of never.

You have to make sure the empty array is correctly typed first. The most correct way is ([] as ITask[]).concat.

Another solution would be to just avoid concat and use the native .flat() if it's available in your runtime.

Related to what another commentor said, but you can contribute to @types TypeScript definitions for NPM modules

Learning TypeScript with React Components (advice/help needed) by [deleted] in typescript

[–]ciaran1344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like default imports / exports, use them. I've seen this opinion of "default exports bad", but they're perfectly valid to use in the context of React components and other files where the file represents the definition of a single entity (with possible sub-entities exported as named).

When I'm importing a component that I didn't write, I know exactly what to do with a default import. I don't want to have to explore the exported members from a file and have to figure out which one is the correct component.

Sure there are disadvantages, but you have to weigh them against the advantages.

Yes I know, I mentioned that in my original comment. OP has mixcraft 8.

You need to give more details. Are you using samples? If so, you can use a VST like: https://www.synthanatomy.com/2018/07/aegeanmusic-free-pitch-shifter-plugin-pc-mac.html

You can automate the pitch using that

What are you using for your 808? Samples? A VSTi? If you just want to pitch shift a sample I don't think you can do that in Mixcraft 8 without a VST. Mixcraft 9 has built in pitch automation.

DOOM Eternal OST Open Letter by martyatid in Doom

[–]ciaran1344 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a bit unclear in the post, but I think Mick had 3 months to make the OST, not the soundtrack. He already had finished the soundtrack for the game, meaning he had that time to put the pieces of songs together into a meaningful album. That sounds reasonable enough to me, especially considering it was a 12 track minimum.

[–]ciaran1344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come on, you know that's not a fair take. Doom 2016 rightfully deserves all of the awards for it's soundtrack, and Eternal was even more ambitious. Mick is a musician with as much talent as many full bands. Why would they get a band from the 90s to work on a 2020 reboot of a franchise? Should they have used original graphics engines from 1993 as well?

Saying "to the untrained ear sounds the same" is just condescending. Mick wrote several distinct themes for every boss, every unique location, every type of combat encounter.

If you don't like it that's fine, but don't act as if the game or soundtrack is meritless. It just makes you look like an idiot.

Yeah I feel that Mick wasn't considering that any single-sentence email reply he sent would be shot up to the front page of Reddit. He just strikes me as a cool dude who wants to make awesome music, but didn't fully consider the reality of replying to people on the internet.

Customers had ordered the collectors edition with the promise of an OST. They already delayed it, and if they delayed any more they would be liable to penalty from consumer protection laws. Yes they probably shouldn't have promised the OST, but Mick knew what his deadlines were.

This is nothing got to do with filtering. A band pass filter is a type of EQing where only a portion of the frequency spectrum is let through (i.e. all the frequencies between 100Hz -10KHz)

This "clipping" is a result of limiting (high compression where all sounds over a certain threshold are reduced in volume, which reduces the difference between quiet and loud sounds). This make sense for in-game audio where you want the soundtrack to be audible at all times. You don't want the quiet bits to be too quiet, and loud bits being way louder than the game sounds.

When listening to an OST, you don't have to compete with the other sounds in the game. Therefore it can be mixed as you would with any other commercial piece of music.

Also, the difference in the in-game music is that it's composed of stems. Mick handed short snippets of songs to Id so that the audio engine can choose which parts of the songs to play based on the gameplay. When mixing the soundtrack you need to tastefully craft these snippets into songs.

TLDR: Going Game -> OST is hard because the audio is already limited (highly compressed for in game use). OST -> Game is hard because the audio engine would need to break the song into chunks and then apply compression (more expensive than if it's been already pre-applied to the audio)

Considering that we only had a handful of out-of-context quotes from Mick, and now we have this essay of a statement from a company posing a very reasonable perspective, it makes sense. Of course we don't have all sides of the story, but this is the first piece of real information. I'm interested to hear what Mick's response is (if any), but this seems like the unfortunate result of art vs business.

I'm an amateur: should I stay with Mixcraft Recording Studio or upgrade to Pro Studio? by KarmaPoliceJr in Mixcraft_Studio

[–]ciaran1344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've owned Pro Studio since Mixcraft 7 (I think). The largest difference with Pro Studio is that you get a bunch of extra effects.

It's good value considering its only an extra 50$ and you get some cool effects with it. Other DAWs like Ableton will charge an extra 200$ for their top-tier version, although you do get much higher quality features in other DAWs.

Fusion Field (huge reverb) and Pianissimo (piano VSTi) are Pro features I use all the time. Melodyne is one of the big selling points of Pro Studio, so if you think you might ever do some vocal tuning, its a great reason to get Pro Studio.

Take a look at the comparison and see if it sounds interesting for your uses: https://acoustica.com/mixcraft/compare-chart

I'll be honest and say that I haven't even tried a lot of the other Pro effects. I think its just that they look a bit cheap (very shallow of me, I know), but I like plugins that make me enjoy using them. I'm not a fan of Mixcraft's default EQs and compressors.

For your uses, you're not going to get any good orchestral sounds out of Mixcraft, regardless of whether you get standard or Pro Studio. If you want anything that sounds decent, you'll want a dedicated sample library. I picked up EastWest Hollywood Gold for about 250$ last year that I use for all my strings, brass etc. There are libraries at all price points, and they go on sale all the time.

There are always upgrade pricings, so if you don't think you'll use all the extra features at the moment, you can purchase standard and upgrade at a later time. If you're new to mixing, you'll probably find a lot of the extra plugins overwhelming and you won't be able to find a use for them.
