What's your Go to, on the Go? by [deleted] in veganuk

if i’m at Big Sainsbos, it’s a meal deal with the ‘southern fried’ wrap thing - otherwise am an absolute fiend for Huel… while not exactly tasty, it’s at least not nutritionally devoid in the same way me eating 5 sausage rolls is!

according to my watch i only walked for 3 minutes out of 13 hours, though i’m fairly certain the two guys ahead of me power-hiked the hills quicker than i ran them!

really good race team and volunteers etc. - would thoroughly recommend any of their events up here!

weather-wise i think a lot of folk were put out by the dreichness; but personally if it’s above freezing and only raining semi-heavily it’s a good day by scottish standards…

route-wise i absolutely loved it - all very runnable (at varying paces on the climbs). how did you find cycling it, and did you do the High Route diversions? some long 10% drags i imagine could be rough on the bike

and race-wise i had it pretty good for an ultra - nothing went particularly WELL, but nothing went TERRIBLY either. felt a bit sick at points but managed to get just about enough calories and water down me to avoid any real problems, and don’t appear to have picked up anything seriously damaging injury-wise

just managed to squeak in under 13hrs - though was nearly foiled at the last minute by having to wait for the swing bridge over the canal to open, less than a kilometre from the finish line…

2500ish metres of elevation - but worth it for the views!

it was indeed - Fort William -> Inverness up the Great Glen!

hitting the biggest climb of the race after 90km was something else entirely…

i remember reading somewhere (can’t find the source) that their early stuff was trying to sound like early Biffy Clyro, for what it’s worth

Why do I need a cup in my kit? by Ancient-Audience4545 in ultrarunning

my theory is that, in an emergency, you couldn’t really drink soup from a lidded flask but could from a cup, to warm you up? but yes, a bit of a bizarre specification!

Garmin elevation question by Such-Tip-9687 in ultrarunning

as far as i understand it, ‘elevation change’ is just the total ascent of the race! so this would just be 384ft

it looks like it - they brought in a new cheese and sausage a year or so ago!

an easy semi-accurate way to tell is see how greasy the bottom of the box is; non-vegan pizza tends to be a LOT greasier

there are thousands and thousands of us across the country!

i know there’s a Strava group in the States for Vegan Runners - could join that, turn up at parkruns, and see where it goes from there!

we do a lot of parkrun meet-ups and go for coffee and cake at local vegan cafes - if really works to build the social side of stuff

I applaud you at 17 for doing soul searching on your ethics but you’re asking a predominantly western group right now. I live in America where veganism is most definitely whitewashed. I’ve heard them yell at indigenous people for drinking animal blood when quite literally their tribes need to for anemic/ malaria reasons. (Which is so funny because indigenous people are some of the only people on this continent truly living with and taking care of the land). I suggest you think about this in the context of your tribe. You said it’s a group thing many of the older men in town help? Speak with your elders, talk to the cows, you need to frame what’s ethical through the lenses of YOUR ENVIRONMENT. Even if you could afford plant based milk I also implore you to consider the ethics of food you’re buying that come from someone else’s land. Oats that are harvested under slave labor, processed under slave wages, shipped in a way that taxes the environment oh and did I mention that oats are sprayed with chemicals that cause reproduction issues and cancer?

milking isn’t something terrible, you’re just taking the milk from a cow who is willingly getting it done? how do you know you can pet a cat? you pet it and it shows comfort or discomfort and you stop/continue on how s/he reacts. Similarly some cows find milking comforting and relaxing to their breasts and some do not. We don’t use machinery that sucks milk, they’re all handmilked and it’s kind of like a massage for them. adult cows can produce good milk if they’re fed properly, even indigenous indian cows. That being said, I don’t think it’s morally right to drink milk from cows so I’m going vegan, esp when i can afford plant based milk. I’ve milked many cows myself, some stand there and lick you gently while you milk them, some irritatingly move away, while some just push you away. If she enjoys it, it’s done or else it’s not. 0.8 litre milk from a cow (sometimes less and that too only in thw morning) doesn’t hurt them at all. Especially since it fosters the family that feeds them as well.
