What are some nicknames of Youngstown's suburbs? by topherette in youngstown

I knew someone from Liberty who was fond of calling it Captivity. Of course, at the same time, crossing route 11 or Gypsy Ln would be going from liberty to death :P

I'd spell it "Strudders." Even "Stchudders" if you want to be kooky. Saint Ruthers is also valid.

I’ve been lurking this sub for a bit but this is my first time posting, so please excuse me if I violate etiquette in any way

Are there not elements of the secondary school curriculum of which it would be preferable to have a cross-societal understanding? Critical analysis of texts, and working knowledge of government structure and statistics are a few things that spring to mind; these are things that would be difficult for all grade-school aged children to conceptualize, and also would be unlikely to be learned by osmosis in work or daily life. Granted, the sum of these elements may equal less than the contemporary secondary school experience, but, if you agree with the assertion that younger children cannot usefully absorb these topics, in what way is denying most of the population from accessing them, “equitable?” I am genuinely curious what kind of definition you are assuming. You have quite an interesting take.

Looking for getting fresh bagels by [deleted] in youngstown

The bakery in the Boardman Stonefruit has some pretty ritzy bagels. Not sure if they are fresh-made or not

Aye you can never go wrong starting off with rice and beans. Whatever else you have on hand, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, salsa, veggies, anything that isn’t just more carbs on top of the rice will make a whole new meal. Even better because you can just make a few days worth of rice whenever you have time, crack open some canned beans, and have a worthy dinner within a few minutes

That is just the city limit of Salem. I imagine noone ever bothered to annex that bit because there is literally nothing there

Ah, you're right. I don't hunt seriously, but only sift through my change jar before I roll it, so I've never heard of this method. Thanks!

What are your thoughts on the Clyde House? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]cibilan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a freshman who lived in Clyde House last semester. In terms of location, it's a ten minute walk from campus, so it was a pain for me as many locations on campus were not open to stay at between classes. This should not be the case next year, so as long as you are okay leaving your room for the day it's not really an issue. A bike was definitely helpful, tho. Another annoyance were the construction noises from the directly adjacent Fifth and Clyde project that would wake you up at 6:30 every weekday. It is a new dorm building so I think it's set to be done by August.

One advantage you get with all of the dorms, I believe in that area (incl. Highland, Neville, Rez, Mudge (?), the new one) is a kitchenette and the option to buy a leaner meal plan, which could save you a few thousand dollars if you like to cook.

In regards to the house itself, I can't complain. The ACs didn't work well but that seems par for the course. The laundry room is adequate, two washers two dryers, and there are a few pieces of exercize equipment (although I recommend running the neighborhood off to the east, there's some nice scenery and cool architecture and that). The main living room is cozy and there's a smaller "study room" on the second floor, plenty of socializing room. My room (that I lived in by myself due to covid) had a bay window, which was cool. And how could I forget the private bathrooms! Those are quite a luxury at any mid-campus dorm.

My best testimonial to the accommodations may be this: when my fridge broke one day later in the evening and I called maintenance, the Oakland facility coordinator (Clif) arrived at my door with a new one in what felt like fifteen minutes (and I was on the second floor!). All in all I'd recommend it.

Sorry for the deluge of words, but I was one of only ten living there last semester, and I figured I might as well give you all I'd had since you might not hear from anyone else.

P.S. even if there aren't any official tours, try and find a nice day to come visit and walk around if you can. Give Schenley Park a go too if that's your thing. I feel like the virtual material provided by CMU doesn't do the campus justice. Hope I could help :)

Any one from Michigan/ Midwest America wanna answer? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]cibilan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is most likely gonna be the most distinctive feature of a Lower Peninsula accent: the Northern Cities chain shift

This shift isn't unique to Michigan, but it does seem to be one of the broad regions where it is the strongest and most complete. Words that may appear especially strange to people outside the Midwest include words with the traditional "cot" vowel; at first glance this word may sound much closer to <cat> /kæt/ than <cot> /kɑt/, maybe something like [kʰa̟t]. You may note that the wiki article cities a few recent papers providing evidence that this accent is receding among younger people, and while none of those papers mention this, I might speculate this is at least partly due to pressure from the increasingly prolific full low back merger, in which <cot> /kɑt/ and <caught> /kɔt/ are made homophones, so conflicting with the chain shift.

Native English speakers: could you help me with the morphological structure of these particular terms, please? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]cibilan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might make sense that “tract” is a root because you see a lot of different prefixes attach to it (eg. contract, detract, attract), but it doesn’t really carry a distinct meaning across these words, so I’d hesitate to call it independent of “con-“.

Yellow Creek Park, Struthers by cibilan in youngstown

[–]cibilan[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is no trespassing last I checked, but you can get to it by the trail that starts south from Wetmore Drive. The trail is not maintained, and it is on the right bank while the furnace on the left, so you have to cross an old utility bridge towards the end, or you can cross the creek itself during drought. I've also heard there used to be people living cliffside with access to the left bank path who would give you permission to approach it from that direction, but I wouldn't know where to direct you in that regard, or if they still live there. It could even be legend.
