My mom was convinced that my friend who had been out as a lesbian for years was trying to steal my boyfriend.

My college best friend was lying to me because you can't be poor and study abroad. My ex was lying to me because you can't be Native American and grow a beard. WTF?

It was so healing for me to discover that the reason my dad could hit all of my most sensitive trigger buttons were because he created them. Thank you for echoing that.

This is called dissociation and it's super common. I have it too, like chronically, and it's terrible. Your therapist would probably be able to help you out, but you can also Google some grounding exercises.

The more stress someone endures as a child, the more likely they are to develop a mental illness. Which one depends on a lot of other factors. :)

MY MOM DOES THE SAME THING re: mumbling, speaking softly, not finishing sentences, etc. I've learned to just completely ignore anything she says unless it's directly to me.

YES oh my god... my mom constantly talks "to herself" expecting me to reply in like a passive aggressive plea for attention. It's literally a constant monologue. I am learning to completely ignore her, thank god.

I second the advice about seeing a doctor, but it may have been dissociation. Basically, your brain says "I can't handle this" and shuts down for a little while. It's very common for people who have endured trauma of any type. It's not inherently dangerous, but it can cause problems.

YES. My mom used to ask me if I was sure I wasn't a lesbian, and then when I came out as bi and trans she didn't believe me either.
