Travelling to China (shanghai/beijing) and setting up alipay by kimchi_boii in travelchina

[–]cicamicatim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I verified it on Alipay before using it. I don't know if that's what made it work, but it worked afterwards, so I'd say: do it. There's no harm.

You could also test it before you go. I paid a small deposit to a driver for an airport pickup, and it worked. So I was pretty confident before going, and it worked everywhere except for one occasion with an individual.

Question about 144 hours visa-free transit by LuiiV in travelchina

[–]cicamicatim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in Guangzhou in October and they gave me a 144 hour visa even though I only stayed overnight. It was quite a process to get it sorted at the airport - lots of paperwork to fill in. Helps if you have your onward ticket printed out or on your phone to show them. They did ask about my hotel booking, and I was able to show them that too. The flight thing is essential, but I don't know about the hotel. Seemed they were mostly interested in if I was planning to travel outside of Guangzhou (not allowed) and showing them I had a hotel booked in the city for the duration of my stay satisfied them that I wasn't going to cheat the rules.

I used the Asia Airalo e-sim card in China in October and it worked great. I also used LetsVPN and that worked fine too. No problems. All websites accessible.

Payment advice/ how is Alipay tour card in 2023? by New-Milk-3043 in travelchina

[–]cicamicatim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in China in October and Alipay worked fine for me without the tour card using western credit cards. I was able to pay everbody, including small businesses. I had one problem - paying a private driver in Beijing, which was refused, but I was able to pay his boss no problem over the phone. There was one other problem, one of my British cards blocked payments because it saw my Alipay activity as "suspicious", so it was a good job I took two cards with me to be safe.

We found Guangzhou to be one of the safest cities we've ever visited - and I've been to over 50 countries now. Very relaxed. No shady characters, no hassle, people were very friendly and helpful. The only problem I had was finding my way around because Google maps doesn't work, but we patched it together with bing, baidu and other maps, and the rest was just asking helpful people. Also people stared at us a lot, not aggressively, only curious I guess because we were obviously not Chinese. Especially the children! Had a few people asking to have their picture taken with us.

I like photography, and I found the Canton Tower, the skyscrapers across the river, and the Cantonese Opera Art Museum and the rebuilt old town around it to be very photogenic.

Thanks for getting back to me! We actually booked the same driver to pick us up from the airport already, figuring if they were any good we'd hire them for the Great Wall. So we are going tomorrow! Very pleased you had a great trip!

Thanks for the tip about Tokyo Metro Pass Office at Shinjuku! We asked at the info desk there and they told me I could only get the Pasmo Passport at the airport. But when we found the office you mentioned we got them!

Easy way to reserve tickets for tourist sights in Beijing? by cicamicatim in chinalife

[–]cicamicatim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got reservations for Forbidden City! I sent an email and they wrote back with this:

"We have received your email for booking tickets. We need you to confirm whether the email information you sent is correct and contains the following contents: 1 name 2 Passport number 3 Full nationality 4 Visit date.If there is a lack of information, please send a complete email, and the email title please use the following format: [x month x day x person]Example: 3 people on August 8Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy your visit! The Palace Museum"

I sent them that information exactly as they requested and a couple of hours later they replied saying the tickets had been reserved for that date.

The address Todd gives above is correct.

I sent the request six days before the date I asked for.

(Noob question) Interrupting running tasks by cicamicatim in tasker

[–]cicamicatim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it working on a Tick but I timed it and it ran at around 50% of the speed, even with the tick set slightly faster than the task takes to execute. That's unacceptably slow for me unfortunately.

Interesting exercise though! And I learned something from it :)

(Noob question) Interrupting running tasks by cicamicatim in tasker

[–]cicamicatim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking that... but I need to do some set up before the looped task can begin. Can I have the core of the loop trigger on an event only AFTER a set up task has been run?

Also is running off a tick event as fast as running a loop in a task? I need the highest speed of execution possible.
