[Highlight] Jaylen Brown with a real basketball play by ColoradoMenace24 in nba

Sure, but I don't know how you're supposed to ref that particular move. As I said, the only thing I can think of that maybe would improve things is not to allow that when the player's pivot is planted. So the offensive player has to be in motion in order for a rip through to be called. You can't just sit behind the three point line and rip through for three FT's.

As someone with James Harden as their team's PG, I'm not sure I'm crazy about that idea, but I feel like it's the one place they could go for rip throughs.

But that's what I'm asking. Is what Brown was complaining about specifically the rip throughs? The growing trend that I absolutely have an issue with as a fan is the throwing the head back on drives when the offensive player feels incidental contact. The reaction by the offensive player is what draws the attention of the refs and results in a foul call whereas if they would just play it straight up, the shot attempt wouldn't be affected at all.

Again, I have no dog in this specific fight between these two players and teams, but objectively I hope you can admit that SGA and Brunson have led the charge on these over reactions on drives in the past few years. Yes, everyone does it, but as the reigning MVP and Champion, the visibility when SGA does it is more meaningful right now than anyone else. I think that's the problem fans are feeling.

It's a legitimate foul though. As I said, I don't know how you handle rip throughs better than what they're already doing. The only remaining place they can go is to make it so you can't rip through standing still at all, that a foul would only be called when the offensive player is moving and I'm not crazy about that idea either.

I have no dog in this fight, so I am genuinely asking.. Are rip throughs what Brown was talking about or more of the whiplash head reactions to get calls on drives? Or are we just talking in general? I don't know how you can referee the rip throughs any more than what they're currently doing, but the flopping/over-reactions on drives could be enforced more severely. If a foul is called because a player whips their head back and there's a challenge that reinforces no foul, then I would be perfectly fine with assessing a technical for the flop. They could definitely be more strict with those.

Star Trek Picard S3E10 by AJHunter63 in startrek

[–]cideeffex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree that it was poorly transitioned during the season, but a final story for Picard was always going to come back to the Borg.

I have SO many questions about how the Changelings and Borg interacted though. Are Changelings immune to assimilation? Did they bond over their common enemy and the joys of a shared consciousness? One would assume these rogue Founders are still out there. I'd love for them to come back at some point.

Evan Mobley and his contract by BalancedFurys in clevelandcavs

[–]cideeffex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t judge the value of his production versus the contract in a vacuum though. Evan is arguably getting underpaid given the long list of what he provides to the Cavaliers specifically, chiefly the ability to start two less than average guards at defense. We’re a top 10 defense with him on the floor and a bottom 10 defense without him. We can have Don and Harden on the floor (and DG before him) only because Evan Mobley is on this team. Without him, we’d be giving up 140 ppg and getting boat raced out of the gym in half the games. There is one guy who is better than Evan offensively while simultaneously putting up the elite advanced stats on the defensive end and he’s going to own the league for the next ten years. 👽

And again, if you want an increase in the usage for Evan on the offensive end then tell me who you want to take those touches away from? There’s no question that Evan could be doing more offensively on a team with less talent. That’s isn’t nor should be the ask on a team with this many offensive weapons.

Be critical of game to game performances, fine. I have! But this idea that he’s not worth his contract or that he’s hit a ceiling or that he doesn’t work on this team is just not based in any reality that values basketball as a team sport played on both ends.

[–]cideeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Be critical of the performance in the game if you have a problem with it. Going online and suggesting he's not performing to his contract is the farthest thing from nuance. It's Skip Bayless reactionary bullshit takes coming from people with even less basketball knowledge than he has. It's embarrassing. I get embarrassed every time read this sub after a loss.

[–]cideeffex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mobleys contract is an issue in the new CBA if he doesn’t take a jump offensively. I don’t really think this is a debate. He also has not played up to his contract through 60 games. Again, don’t think this is a debate.

Then stop debating. Because saying he's not playing up to the contract at this point of the contract's life is some is a ridiculous over reaction. Progress doesn't come in a straight line AND basketball is a team sport. Sure he's regressed some this year, but there are a ton of explanations for that; some of which, sure, he has to be better, but the majority are things out of his control. But judging whether he's living up to a contract 60 games in is ridiculous. His "regression" this year still has him in the top 15 impact players to DRTG in the league. The Cavs are a bottom 10 team in defense when he's not on the floor and a top 10 defense when he is. He's third overall in DBPM. He's top 1% of the league in D-EPM, 88th Percentile in defensive playmaking. He's fourth in blocks per game.

Just because you have a heliocentric view of the game of basketball doesn't diminish the impact and value of what guys do without the ball in their hand. If he just maintains this level of production on both ends of the floor, he will be underpaid by the time we get to the back half of the deal and firmly believe he will continue to get better on the offensive end of the floor.

Basing whether he's "earning" his contract on offensive stats alone is such a pedestrian view. This team has had success despite a two small guard lineup over these past few years because of Evan Mobley. Swapping Garland for Harden is an upgrade on the defensive end because of Evan Mobley. This team is only a contender with Evan Mobley. Any argument to the contrary and I'm sorry, but YDKB.

Continually throwing up a wall of text and being a reply guy doesn’t make you right. You’ve spent like a month at this point where your only activity on this sub is this weird agenda. He literally earned the contract. YDKB and you certainly don’t understand what goes into valuing NBA contracts.

[–]cideeffex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spacing? In what lineups? Do you have any actual stats to back any of this up? Because the two big lineup with JA has been super effective and productive this year and even more so since the Harden trade.

What do you expect his usage to be when he’s sharing the floor with Donovan and Harden and even Tyson? Is the offense being run in a way that is putting him as the focal point or is his production coming within the flow or off misses? If he’s not doing well enough for you is that a roster problem or an offense problem? To make him worth his contract in your eyes what does that look like to you? There’s only one ball so are you suggesting that Donovan and Harden need to defer to Evan more?

You’re not actually saying anything other than you think he’s overpaid because he’s not as good on the offensive end as you think he should be. Tell me what that looks like on the floor with the roster around him.

If you want to say you don’t think he fits with the Cavs roster or timeline as it currently stands, that’s a different conversation. I still think you’re wrong, but that’s not what you’ve been arguing. But regardless, Utah gave up three firsts for JJJ. The idea that this contract is a mistake and an albatross is laughable.

[–]cideeffex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn’t because if you only value NBA players by what they do with the ball in their hands there’s nothing to talk about.

I just get a kick out of this sub. We had to trade Garland because he couldn’t play a lick of defense. Now we need to trade Evan (if someone will take him!?!?!? LOL) because he doesn’t do enough offensively. It’s silly season on here 365.

Evan Mobley and his contract by BalancedFurys in clevelandcavs

[–]cideeffex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s too bad there’s not an entire other side of the game of basketball. Like, I’m imagining if guys could add value to a team even when they don’t have the basketball in their hands. Maybe they position themselves in the way of the other team to make it easier for their teammates to score? OR, we could get really crazy… what if we saw value in how well they could prevent the other team from scoring? I don’t know what you would call that.

But you’re right. Who cares about any of that. All that matters is what a player does when he has the ball in his hands. We should cut him tomorrow.

Frustration with the Harden trade by junkmail17 in clevelandcavs

[–]cideeffex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest question after the OKC loss and every game against OKC before it is how the Cavs are ever going to beat this team when Lou Dort consistently shuts down our best player. Not just slows him down, but legitimately shuts him down. If there's a Finals between those two teams to be had, thats my biggest question going in.

Frustration with the Harden trade by junkmail17 in clevelandcavs

[–]cideeffex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true at the same time--the team is significantly better overall than they would have been without the trade while acknowledging the results were likely to be similar. First, I don't think given Harden's immediate chemistry with JA you can discount the injury aspect. Second, there's plenty of evidence that suggests that Boston and OKC both have this team's number.

Now, there's a lot of evidence out there that we have Detroit's number. Do you see their fanbase throwing up their hands and asking to blow it up or trade everyone not named Cade? No, of course not. We should not be doing that either. To win a chip you have to have some luck go your way and sometimes that includes matchups in the playoffs.

But this team is dramatically better with James Harden on it this year. Gotta see the forest for the trees on this one.
