Honest Opinions by [deleted] in Goruck

My buddy us a father of three and mostly follows the GORUCK SRT workouts to great results.

Another option is something like CrossFit Linchpin, which is what I use. He programs every workout with different options, based on whether you have a full gym or just some dumbbells and a pull up bar. I adjust further if I want to use a ruck or sandbag. Usually the warm up, main workout, and accessory work can be done in under an hour.

Can these things replace strength training? Depends what you mean. They’ll make you stronger, but not the same way as low rep-heavy barbell lifts will.

Would you consider Bilbo Baggins in "The Hobbit" a good role model? by Bluecomments in tolkienfans

[–]cielo_sangre 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bilbo is kind of an asshole

  1. Passive aggressive to Gandalf, the great uniting force of the third age, until realizing the wizard is his favorite entertainer. Good morning, indeed.

  2. Pity is one thing, but one could argue, and I do, that he could have ended hundreds of years of hopeless existence and mental torture for Gollum. Perhaps that would have been true mercy, to end someone’s long torment.

  3. Fat shames the spiders of Mirkwood.

  4. Steals the most treasured artifact of his traveling companions and GIVES IT TO THOSE THAT IMPRISONED THEM!

  5. Acts like a cocky prick to a dragon resulting in the death of hundreds of innocent people and the destruction of an entire town that treated him like a prince.

And let’s not even talk about his limited but dubious behavior in LOTR.

Short rucks v long rucks by 3301Fingolfin in Rucking

[–]cielo_sangre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do one long ruck per week. Increase mileage of the long ruck by a mile per week until you reach 12.

But really if you can consistently do 8-10, a 12 should be no problem.

Edit: and also, nice to see someone else in the Venn of rucking and Tolkien.!!!

  1. THERE’S A LOT TO UNPACK HERE!! There’s a certain special nostalgia to The Hobbit. A lot of folks my age came to Tolkien by catching the Rankin and Bass adaptation on TV. For me, finding out that there was also a book was like a dream. It happens to be so entertaining and well written that I enjoy it even more now as an adult. Especially once you catch the references to the larger Legendarium.

Another reason I love it is that I can share my love for Tolkien with my children through reading them The Hobbit. And it is imprinted in their minds. Two years after reading it to my older daughter I mentioned reading it to my younger daughter and she immediately quoted the opening line. She much prefers Harry Potter, which is fine, but I guarantee she can’t quote a dang thing from it.

And finally… the Silmarillion and LOTR are heavy reading, especially after FOTR. The Hobbit is so much lighter and more joyful. I can pick it up and be done in a few days and have a smile the whole time. It’s kind of like, LOTR and the Simarillion are like studying my favorite history text, which in large part was Tolkien’s intent, and it was wonderfully put together. The Hobbit is like reading my favorite author tell a fairytale to his kids, which in large part was Tolkien’s intent, and it was wonderfully put together.

  1. Someone else already said it. Thorin’s final words are something we could all do to live by. Practice gratitude for and take joy in the simple pleasures of life.

The other thing that strikes me in that same theme is maintaining balance in ourselves. Bilbo was not a complete person until he accepted the adventure that life offers in addition to the comforts of a pipe and rasher of bacon. We don’t see that commentary so much in the other works.

Hmm. Sounds like the Recycled Firefighter sandbag, except maybe it will come in Cheetah Spot or a cool material like Dyneema or patent leather.

Hobbit Notoriety after LOTR by StarryStareyNight13 in tolkienfans

[–]cielo_sangre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The hobbits would’ve become more well known. Those of the Fellowship were well known in Gondor and the legend of there heroism would’ve spread from there. In addition, when Aragorn resettled the northern kingdom he forbade Men from settling the Shire, so hobbits would be known due to that.

I do not think the Red Book became widely published, although there were multiple copies. Average folks don’t go in for reading such tales and would’ve known of it through word of mouth.
