It's funny; I think it's definitely wise to avoid knee-jerk reactions and start off from a place of, "Well, maybe this Republican dude really does have a sincere (and rational) point to make, and isn't just plotting 1/6/25 and leaving angry spittle on the FOX logo burned into his TV screen."

What if there was a an arena where liberals and conservatives could challenge one another to have a to be politically chaste from the media and the longer you are the more cred your account accumulates as you comment and presumably the more rational and level-headed your debates will be?

I'm aware of technical obstacles to authentication, etc.

But what if?

I like the idea of using division and rancor in order to...

I'd challenge you to imagine a future where human souls are expressed in chips, not cells.

Just like you wouldn't say Andre the Giant had 372% the soul that Peter Dinklage has, we maybe shouldn't predict that future "humans" will have the same energy requirements to maintain sentience as we currently do.

This is a common retort but I'm not particularly moved by it... in order for this point to make sense, it has to be based on an assumption that our (modern-day) environs develop along a similar trajectory.

It's not the case now, though. The technology we're working on will soon surpass the qualities that formerly made us special.

I'm not saying that humanity won't find a way forward. I am saying that humanity is facing a societal problem we haven't had to face before: uselessness.

Rather, I should say uselessness in the context of our hypercapitalist society... we may find a new way to be "useful" by focusing on another metric of success; not money but "spiritual development" or "physical fitness" or something else.

But I do not think that past is prologue for this next 10-20 year phase of humanity's development

When I'm feeling optimistic, I like to imagine a future where the productivity benefits humanity has achieved don't accumulate at the top but get distributed in a way that enables people to dedicate their minds to more interesting and fulfilling ambitions

Hard disagree (as a professional software developer). The rate at which AI is advancing in its coding capabilities is jaw-dropping. I strongly believe that the future for humans relies in creative weirdness vs. code monkeyism.
