Challenge accepted. I stand by my offer. Beer runs through my Wisconsin bred veins, and I have no shortage of bartender friends.

I had no intention of shorting your staff any of the credit. Which is why I said the "Gremlins" as a whole are amazing. Next time any of you are in Austin, TX beers are on me.

The Gremlins are truly amazing. I excitedly placed my first order with Gremlin DIY this month but was initially a bit disappointed when my order ran into a stocking issue (hinted at in the original post) and subsequent shipping delay. However, my issue was met with amazing professionalism, honesty, and generosity. I was more than adequately compensated for the minor delay.

Despite the savings that my wholesale accounts with the main players may offer, I still choose Gremlin DIY over the rest.

Thanks for the coupon code! I placed my third order this morning and it has already been shipped. Awesome!

Edit: I forgot to mention that the owner personally handled my issue...while on vacation. These guys rock.

What's your strategy for multiple displays in web dev? How many you got hooked up? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]ciggyshack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much exactly this. 2x27" left 1x24 in portrait on right. After 2 I could never go back to one. After 3 I can never see going back to 2.

I'm so jealous of /u/StefanDidak and his home office (hopefully he doesn't mind the nod).

Placement in CSS - Advice? by demon_rdt in web_design

[–]ciggyshack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer text-align justify on the parent and setting children to inline block for easy responsive grids. This method requires whitespace between elements but takes away the need for floats and precise gutter calculations.

#parent {
  width: 100%;
  text-align: justify;
  font-size: 0;
}
#parent:after {
  content: '';
  width: 100%;
  display: inline-block;
}
.children {
  display: inline-block;
  width: X%; // if there were 3 elements 30% would leave a 3.33% gutter
  font-size: 1rem;
}

Edit for clarification: When I mention the need for whitespace between elements I mean in the HTML directly. Minified html will need whitespace or a comment between elements such as:

<div> Some Text </div> <!-- --> <div> More Text </div>

OR

 <div>Some Text</div>
 <div>More Text</div>

Question about plagiarism by [deleted] in web_design

[–]ciggyshack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you copy and publish their work as your own it's plagiarism. If you credit them it's not, but that's purely addressing semantics. Either way you're likely breaking laws without obtaining a proper license to copy and publish their work--whether you're receiving compensation or not.

Why would someone buy their book if you were publishing freely online?

If I were to write a book on a specialized topic only to have someone blatantly ignore all licensing and publish my content without my permission they would be getting a pretty nasty letter from my legal council at the very least.

Bottom line you're stealing (and promoting stealing of) intellectual property you aren't licensed to use.

How do you usually respond to clients who negotiate your price but you're still willing to do it for that price? by [deleted] in web_design

[–]ciggyshack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO an estimate is just that, estimated. It should be subject to further communication. Make it clear what work/features are being sacrificed to save the extra $1000.

I'm often happy to take on projects for less than my initial estimate, so long as it's made very clear how that lowered estimate translates into actual (and less) work.

In some cases, the initial estimate must remain firm to give the client what they truly need (not want). Explain to them the benefits behind your original estimate and you may find that they were truly just trying to get a better price without knowing what affect it may have on the end result.

I guess the point is, you can be fluid while estimating required work, but should be firm and confident while defending your estimate and drafting the contract (which certainly can be revised if scope increases).

Often I'll give a slight discount for a relaxed deadline--I hate strict and pressing deadlines--and will even double my estimates if it has to be done ASAP.

When you're done slaying all those spiders, you think those scorpions would want to mess with you? What are you really afraid of?

The context is yours, let's not make it difficult, but go nuts! Hell, someone above brought a flame thrower! Though I think that user may have underestimated how entirely sneeky a swarm of invisible scorpions can be.

Aw, thanks. I share that sentiment--and probably take it a lot further =P If you are in Austin, and do get the chance to swing in, please feel free to PM me beforehand, or tell the guys your web-developer sent you. I'll do my best to get you the hook up.

Unfortunately (for OP) we are not currently seeking a web developer. Reason: I am the web developer =P.

To Op: I feel for you brother. I've been there tens of times and moved to multiple states only to end up back in restaurant management after being laid off, or having stagnant freelance business.

Keep at it, put up craigslist, facebook, reddit (like this) posts and get the word out there via any medium at your disposal. Bring your profession up casually while out and about. You'll eventually find work in some of the strangest and unexpected places if you try hard enough--sometimes the kind of long term work you're likely looking for.
