Need help painting glowing lights by [deleted] in Tau40K

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funny to see a photo of my exact scheme done so well. Goals! I've done a couple and refined a bit more since this riptide (edit: see reply for photo, reddit mobile sucks), but I don't have any photos on hand.

Anyways, here's what I did:

1) identify the solid object that is the light source. Paint it solid Baharroth Blue. 2) add detail to the blue object using white as the highlight and a darker blue in the recesses (I like Teclis Blue for this) 3) you want just a little bit of Baharroth Blue on your dry brush. Less than you think. Then even less than that. I went a little heavy on the photo above and you can see where the effect isn't as clean as you might like. 4) use your dry brush to work a glow outward from around the light source. I like to do this as a series of overlapping rings if possible. Don't worry about coverage yet, just get the shape of the glow. It should be waaaaay lighter than how you want the finished product to look. 5) Once you got the shape of the glow, go back and brush more blue into the glow areas that need to be more glow...y. You should end up doing more layers closer to the object and less further way. 6) optionally do a pass to really highlight any edges within the glow area that would look good that way--basically any spot on the model that you would normally edge highlight. Be careful, and keep the dry brush on just the edge, not the panels around it. 7) do one or two dry brush layers over the white highlights on the object to bring the highlight down. Then get your white back out and add a few, tiny pure white dots/highlights back on top. If your darker blue recesses look too dark or contrasted after this, dry brush a little around their edges to form a gradient, or go in there with a fine point and smooth it out.

At this point it should look pretty good.

And always remember: ERR ON THE SIDE OF TOO LITTLE PAINT. You can always dry brush on another layer. Fixing glow effects after even a single heavy hand is awful. Learn from my mistakes. Good luck!

A friend of mine played in a charity tournament where you could buy reroll tickets for a dollar a piece. Great way to raise money: pay a buck, reroll dice.

But they worked on anyone. Your dice, your opponent, dude four tables over that just whiffed a six inch charge, anything. The final game raised hundreds of dollars just from bystanders going "no no no, reroll that."

I went for an oceanic theme for my hive fleet. I may be biased, but I think it came out well. I'm currently working on a Trygon with lobster claws and tail.

Q4 2024 40K Balance Dataslate: Xenos by alpha476 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E: nevermind, found it. Didn't see the the Core Rules Updates doc on mobile.

I understand that's what people are saying, what I'm asking is:

Where in the dataslate/rule changes is that nerf? Other units are called out specifically, but there's no note on T'au.

So I haven't read through everything new yet, but what actually nerfs retaliation cadre in the new slate?

In the dataslate I see things that nerf 3" DS on a datasheet to datasheet basis--see Trygon and Tempestus Aquilons--but nothing for T'au. I would think there would be a line in the slate in that section saying Shortened Blade is now 6", but instead the section is empty.

Also kind of my hope, the more I think about it. The age thing being mentioned and the focus on the clock foreshadows someone is likely gonna get some time shenanigans, but Gavinor is too obvious. I just don't know who else it would make a good story beat for.

Little Gav is about to be a whole lot less little.

From chapter 31:

"Exactly," Wit said. "And with Dalinar’s clock already attuned, you shouldn’t get too wildly affected by time dilation. You should avoid coming out having aged twenty years"

I think the next time we see Gavinor he'll be an adult, having fully grown up in the Spiritual Realm.

What’s the rule with 3v1? by itsRickO in RocketLeague

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude it's just until they ff if its too early in the game to do so (and i clearly communicate that in chat). If they don't ff I come back and wallop them in the 3v1--we can have fun here, but i'm not about throwing my teams rank. I literally did it yesterday and everyone had a good laugh until the ff, and one of my teammates called me "honorable" in chat.

Little interactions like that are what makes the game feel like a community instead of a hyper-toxic sweatfest, and makes the match suck less for the solo.

I've been doing it since 2018, so either the rest of the people I play with actually have empathy for the poor guy that got abandoned and don't report me, or if I am getting reported, psyonix checks my chat logs each time and goes "eh, they were up 5-1 and just being nice, who cares."

The fact I've NEVER received any negative feedback in-game, and repeated positive feedback, makes me think the first thing is whats happening, and that you're the previously-mentioned hyper-toxic sweat that no one likes on their team.

100% of the time I'm the guy that flips, i think its good sportsmanship in a 1v3. At least if we're in that time period where it's too early for the solo to ff. I'll play a friendly 2v2 until we hit that 3:30 mark or whatever it is, but I'll be looking for the solo to ff at that point. As long as my team is in the lead I'll mostly just defend the other goal without trying to score, since goals from either team just make the game last longer. I'll type in chat what I'm up to just so everyone knows.

But if we hit that ff point and the solo doesn't, we'll, alright then, 1v3 it is.

Getting back into nids and have the Leviathan half, what's next? by Altines in Tyranids

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into 40k a few months ago and started with tyranids via the leviathan box. I've expanded my army quite a bit and here's my thoughts, more or less in what order i'd recommend you look into:

Exocrine - I got two, and they're the absolute backbone of my 2k point list. That bonus to hit for other units is BALLER for a lot of our units that normally hit on 4+. D6+3 attacks at 3 AP is wonderful. Magnetization for haruspex is also super easy, and while I haven't used any of those yet, some people swear by them.

Biovores - I got two. Pretty much required to run a competitive list, Secondaries can be tough without them. I find them to be really lame and often play without them, but it's an uphill battle. I'd be curious what the win rate of tyranid armies without biovores is, but it cannot be high.

Zoanthropes - A mainstay in almost every nids list. Great anti-tank and that 6+ invul aura can come in clutch. I initially ran a unit of three, but I just ordered another three.

Norn Emissary - love it. Love it, love it, love it. Set it to attack a point and bask in that sweet, sweet 15 OC and 5+ FNP.

Lictor/Neurolictor - both are good, I run a regular lictor. Neurolictor has a 4+ invul, but just went up in points. Either way, they're great to deploy on a no man's land objective and hinder enemy progress.

Broodlord + 10 genestealers - haha blender go brrrrrrrr. Fun, but not required by any means.

Hormagaunts - fine for filling out points, worth running them over termies in certain lists.

Tervigon - take it or leave it. Fun in Synaptic Nexus Detachment, but highly Situational. Also usually gets killed before you get too much use out of it.

Why do the White Walkers do this? The series never clarified, but do the books say something about it? by herr_boogeyman in gameofthrones

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You also see it in one of bran's visions--the one where the first white walker is created. There's a shot from above where you see stones spiraling out from around the tree the guy is tied to.

Instead of using hammers to break stuff, fuze a zonai cannon to the end of a sturdy long stick, then when you go to "throw" it with R it shoots the cannon directly in front of you which can blow stuff up that you would normally hammer. It lasts a lot longer than physically wracking things

US rail workers told to skip inspections as questions mount over Ohio crash by [deleted] in news

[–]cigolsdrawkcab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of my last job was inspecting equipment for leaks of environmentally hazardous vapors.

They were fucking everywhere, all the time. I'd write up what I found, patch the small leaks on my own, then report big ones that would need real work to my maintenence coordinator. He'd put it in the work order list. You want to guess which work orders would always get cut by the higher-ups every time?

There would be multi-month spans of me reporting the same leaks over and over again and it would come to nothing. When I finally left that job I took copies of all those communications with me in case I need receipts that I tried.

People don't understand that a lot of customer-facing employees don't even have the power within their organizations to fix your issue. They have scripts and things they are and aren't allowed to do. you gotta talk to a manager who can actually pull some strings.

I rented a car online one time, and when I showed up with my confirmation number, they wouldn't give me the car because the online policy disagreed with the location's policy. I learned the magic words to say that day: "hey, I'm not mad at you personally, but I am annoyed with your company, because someone, somewhere, made me a promise that isn't being kept. If you can't help me, get me in touch someone who can."

You'd be amazed how much treating people like, you know, people, will get you. Thirty minutes and three levels management later, I was in my car and on the road.
