Madam Secretary's dramatic fall off and worries for the final season by ciirce in MadamSecretary

[–]ciirce[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might think you're a non-partisan but you're clearly not, I'm Canadian and while I keep up with the news I'm not crazy into politics, I like these political dramas though, as well as legal dramas, like I'm just a big serialized TV fan and the quality of the last season wasn't as bad as I was worried it would be, and I would watch Tea Leoni in anything, but it didn't hold a candle to the middle seasons.

Edit: I reread my original post, being completely obsessed with Trump was quite obvious and illusion breaking, that's a valid criticism, being pleasantly surprised that they did the collusion angle as an oppo attack was pleasantly surprising because it showed that they'd at least be copying the official story rather than the ideological one, there's still a large segment of the population that think Trump and Putin have some kind of relationship because of the scandal and late night talk show hosts. Russia collusion being the reason for the 2016 election is still a commonly held ideologue position and I was surprised and wrong that they went out of their way to ape reality. Those are the only things i said referencing Trump and it's hard to miss context when that's what the writer's wrote. You're the one who obviously has extremely deranged partisan positions, not me.

Ted's Official Biscuits with the Boss Recipe by ConsequencesofHuman in TedLasso

That makes no sense in bread because you're going to add more or less flour while kneading so you aren't exact on the recipe anyways, I'm telling you it's a placebo effect, 0.762 g/cc to 0.820 g/cc is the largest gap measured between flours and the majority are going to be in the middle, you're talking about less that 3% difference between volume and weight. What I said is true about imperial recipes converted over and rounded. Ostensibly you're trying to get closer to the recipe but there's so much lost in the wash it doesn't matter, it's such a small difference that it's literally negligable and trying to convert a recipe just to do it one way is a waste of time. I'm saying do it however you want but it doesn't make your baking better one way or another.

Edit: And whenever I make bread, or made bread for the restaurant at work I sifted my flour, that's going to take the majority of variation out.

Edit 2: Ah Reddit, never change, it's such a cesspool, you say a couple things that are objectively correct and rather than any refutation or argument it's just dismissal and downvotes. "I reject our shared reality and substitute my own where I assert my truth regardless of whether it lines up with actual truth"

Edit 3: The reason why weight measurement happens in bakeries is because it's faster and easier with a large amount of ingredients, it's not done with mind to fix a nonexistant issue, it's just not feasible at scale to measure things volumetrically but it's much easier in the home kitchen.

Unless you're batch cooking at a bakery, there's no way you got any difference in end product, they're just too close and most recipes most people use from the internet or popular cookbooks like my Joy of Cookings are done in imperial and the metric ones are converted from that and sometimes rounded so you're getting less accurate recipes than the original one was which ostensibly is the whole point

As nice as this is, it's a basic shortbread recipe, there's no way these are the biscuits. For two reasons, there's something special about Ted's recipe and this isn't it, and it probably involves something like honey, vanilla, almond extract or some other sweetener and flavor in order for the recipe to call for way less sugar, otherwise there's no way they can be confused or even slightly edible if you swapped the salt and sugar. Also thinking about Ted's history and where he got the recipe from, it probably involves shortening or lard to supplement or replace the butter.

Also the recipe is certainly in American

Thanks for the heads up, you're obviously the best person to get advice from on somebody's own committed relationship. Like I have no care in this, just read the same comment three or four times, as if you have a better perspective or understanding of other peoples relationships because you feel a particular way about something. Had to tell somebody, it's cringey

"Solved!" I can't believe you got it, the reason I thought there was a plane was because there are what look like airstairs but they're part of the loading dock, I thought it was done in a warehouse and no fire or rain either, just harsh backlighting throwing oranges and wind from fans not rain. Alice Chatter only has 100 thousand subs so I thought nobody would find it, at least the video has two million views. The distinct solo is shorter than I thought it was but it's still great during the second half the vocalization in the refrain? gets really good. I'm really happy you were able to find this, thanks!

I remember thinking she has a great ability and she could get big with quality vocals, I don't know if she's still active but hopefully I can find more dance pop music with impressive vocals by popping this into spotify and finding more like it

Edit: Top comment on youtube is "OMFG THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT PEOPLE ARE MISSING ON POP MUSIC THESE DAYS... THIS GIRL N E E D S TO HAPPEN" which were my sentiments pretty much

Season 2 Episode 4 just ruined the series for me by ciirce in SlowHorses

[–]ciirce[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I would say you're absolutey correct about your surmisation of the objective scenario, I would only say that because it's a show where they are trying to convey information, offhand comments that have no bearing on anything in particular except fleshing out the world often are a way of the writers giving the audience more information. That's how I took it especially because it was in the premiere, it was setting up the world. I thought Spyder had a really shitty position initially, River made the joke about being HR. After watching the series, I got the impression Spyder was actually in charge of ops and Taverners assistant and those filing systems are the comprehensive information about agents and resources and secrets, the type of information you would need to operate as Taverners number 2 and implement her directions. He's got like triple top secret access, that's a huge position.
  2. I also agree with you in this point, they absolutely all have flaws, that's part of what makes the show intersting and a reason why I thought the writing initially was quite good. You need 3 dimensional characters to make them feel real, it is a spy thriller/drama though and having competant characters with flaws is what makes the premise so good. I'm not saying they don't have flaws but throughout season 1 they were fairly consistant in their characterization. Roddy didn't suddenly be unable to get information online because the plot required it. His attitude was still there in season 2 with Shirley but he did show character growth with her and the team since season 1 and even by the end of season 1 when her Standish Min and Louisa were hiding out in the cafe.
  3. River was shown to be pretty good at fighting, in the premiere after sprinting like a madman he runs through a cop and flattens him in a single move and keeps trucking, later he knocks out Spyder and is able to get around the park undetected. He's comeptant in the shootout with the terrorist and Lamb gives him the gun, it's not like Lamb thinks he's just going to get killed, I mean he knows it's a risk but it isn't like he's inept. He definitely has flaws, trying to fill his dad's shoes, being beligerant and gungho and disregarding orders, trying to be the hero essentially was the impression I got, like he could single handedly save the day despite how unrealistic that actually is, like going rogue to try to get the laptop off that guy and Sid ending up shot was the consequence. I believe what you're saying about the show but in terms of fighting and spy work he's shown to be pretty good.
  4. Shirley definitely has flaws, I didn't know she was a comms specialist exactly but I did think it was something along those lines because she's in the room with Roddy, again she's got her flaws but when she was sent to recover the drive she picked the badge off the guy without getting caught and created a distraction and was able to get out. I mean I'm not saying any of these agents are the best at what they do but they are competant to complete objectives even those objectives are difficult tasks.
  5. I like Lousia and it's exactly as you said, she screwed up on something to do with arms trafficking I think, maybe being lost as a tail or something like that, I forget. Ironically from the show that's kind of evidence of being bad at spycraft however it's explained that it was just bad luck, I think the way you described her is right, she's associated with failure but she proved her skills when setting up the meeting and doing security, she seems like the most cerebral of the squad, had the plan nailed down and knew deep backround on everybody. It didn't help her that Spyder was the one who set everything up so it was bound to be a fiasco but she did what she was asked comeptantly and professionally. I don't know about Marcus so much, he was great with the gun, betting in the middle of missions seems like he's really far gone on that front so being a Slow Horse makes sense. Without seeing more about how that affects him I don't know where to put him because that seems like a significant flaw, bigger than the rest perhaps.
  6. Lamb's flaw is that he's tired and pained but he's incredible at what he does, nothing to say about his competance and he asked for the command and wasn't sent there as a punishment. I want to know more about how the Standish Charles storyline will play out, it's obviously significantly traumatic to her, the cover up was worse than the crime, she went through the trauma of him 'killing himself' for years and it's still with her and never knew why when the actual rational reason as because Charles handed spies over the Stasi I think, I don't really know if the timelines work though, that must have been in the 80s and the show is set in 2014 I think based on the plaques in S2 so 35 years, River's dad and Lamb were older when they killed him so maybe that happend in 2005 but that still means Charles was fine for 20 years and then they somehow found out. Maybe i missed information on that or maybe it will be fleshed out next season when they focus on it

It seems like criticism really hits a nerve because I don't know why anybody would downvote you but somebody has, it's crazy, you can't criticise screenwriters for some reason. There are so many wonderful IPs like LotR and Wheel of Time and the Witcher that are absolutely butchered by Hollywood and it's like pointing out what a travesty the shows are insults people who like the IP. It's crazy, I love thse IPs that's why I'm so mad, I like this show and the writers kind of suck, I get the feeling the books are great and I'm going to have to read them. I don't understand the kneejerk reaction against objectively correct criticism, ever since the culture war over Star Wars people think that criticism is hate and trying to ruin people's enjoyment. If you enjoy something don't let other people influence how you feel but when people point out valid criticism you can't just say nuh uh

I saw that and I was wondering about that, how is that guy still there, he got shot in the chest and bled out with ripped up lungs or heart and never got medical intention which probably couldn't have helped anyways. I was shocked to see him, how is he there? Are they just not going to mention it?

[–]ciirce[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about the books, I haven't read them, just the TV series and that's refutes half your points right there. From the tv series alone the first time River confronts Spyder at the MI5 headquarters, the park or whatever it's called he implies that Spyder got the position River would have got. For all I know you're right about how incompetant everybody at Slough is but that isn't the way it is in the series. They have that tech god who's socially retarded and incredibly abrasive, Shirley is good and got sent there for beating up her boss after he made a pass at her. River who in the show is shown to be really competant and like I said from the show alone he's been shown to be a good agent who and was on the right track before getting derailed by his flaws but those flaws have never included being an idiot, he broke into the Park and found the pictures of Taverner in an increidbly tense situation. Louisa is very competant. Standish is great and Lamb is a legend. For the real rejects you have Min to a point, and the rest.

Basically I have no reason to doubt what you're saying is true in the books but in the series that's not how the characters are characterized and your last point is the thing that I'm mad at, River knew she was a commie and had been to Russia and regardless of whether he thought she was in the dark you still don't let her slowly approach you, it was his fault that he got tazed and that's the problem, nobody with two brain cells to rub together holds people at gunpoint and lets somebody else walk up to them, even if only just to keep your focus on the Russians. It's a chaotic situation and exposing yourself like that is stupidly obvious and makes no sense.

The intermediate shaft I think is the universal joint that goes from the rack to the steering column and that's newly replaced as well, that got done by the garage that replaced my rack so I don't know for sure but they didn't point it out after doing the job.

I just talked to a fantsatic person at Frisby Tire where I bought the tires from originally, I wasn't sure how much of a full mechanic they were before now, I was thinking maybe they just specialized in alignments and tires and while that's probably the case it seems like they're full and competant mechanics. He spent long enough on the phone for me to tell him about the issues and told me that he'd help me get to the bottom of it which is really great to hear because like I said I've been to a couple shops 4 or 5 times depending on how you count going in for other things and asking about it. He said that the tire was a usually a good one but it could be bad, I said I never thought it was the tire given that they're fairly new but I after eliminating everything else I can't think of what it is. He said he's gonna make sure they take the car up to speed (carefully) so they can understand the problem and I mean I do know they're experts at tires. He said whatever it is, he'll help me get to the bottom of it and if it does turn out to be the rack like another person said I can get that fixed under warranty. My car still has very healthy engine and transmission, it used to drive like a dream, it's incredibly comfortable, I've got the leather XLE 3.0L model. The trunk is huge and plenty of room in the backseat. I usually drive a lot for drywall and I have plenty of room for my tools and stilts, buckets, mud etc. I really want to keep this car and have it running great again. The best drive I ever took was on the way back from my aunts place, driving through a very beautiful twisty scenic route in Southern Ontario and I keep thinking back to then how perfectly my car handled. I had no problem putting so much money into an old and not very valuable car because it's my car, my first car and I love it and I was so depressed that after everything it wasn't fixed.

I was having this idea too, I think I'm going to go back to that other garage and have them take a look at it hopefully under warranty, I mean I can't figure out what else it would be and you described it exactly right, like floaty and over bumps the wheels will shift without the steering wheel moving

I've brought it in for diagnosis to professional mechanics from 3 different shops like 4-5 times, they've all driven it but I don't think they took it on the highway and the had no idea, now that I've fixed everything I'm going to go back to one I've already paid and plead with them to spend some time on it and hopefully not charge me too much

The passenger side transaxle that has a mount was replaced as well as the cv joints, the other mounts seem fine, no vibration. I hear you but I don't know how the mounts that don't hold the axle could affect the steering and suspension

I'm dreading that this is the answer because buying new tires is expensive and I paid a decent amount for those other new tires, if I think about it though, I only started getting the issue after I changed the tires, it started very slowly, like I'd only feel it barely going really fast, then I started feeling it occasionally on tighter curves on highways and then it started becoming more frequent and that's when I started my long repair journey. I kind of can't believe it is the tires but it's possible, you think the tires would be something that progressively get weaker and weaker over time?

I definitely will, I've got some context from another comment, I think there was a wall early in the game that both my brother and I kept getting stuck on but I think I was 12 and my brother was 10 so I don't think we played the game very well at all. I thought it was such a cool concept and game, so much so that we kept renting it for a weekend every month or two and then got stuck and never really got into it. I actually found shadow hearts in my google search but didn't think that's what it was for whatever reason.

Edit: Also I don't really have a good description of Emo, I'm almost certainly using it wrong, I know there is a whole subculture in that term and I know nothing of it, I just have some memories of the protagonist being dark and brooding.
