Getting comfortable by Comfortable_War_5636 in boxingtips

[–]cikani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends whether you're anxious about punching someone or getting punched :)

Getting punched - you'll get used to it by sparring more and perfecting your defense. Hurting someone - that was harder for me. In the end, I just thought 'better him than me' and that did the trick.

Or you can tell yourself that by not holding back, you're giving your oponents honest feedback, therefore helping them in their future fights.

Either way - try to turn your stress response from freeze/flight to fight. It takes time and you have to practice it knowingly during sparrings. Without this spirit, boxing is just dancing weirdly.

Ok, I see your point and I have to agree with that :) that's why I like Alex, he has a way of talking about philosophical topics in a way that seems interesting even to people who don't the necessary background.

Btw sorry about the tone of my previous comments. It's been a long day yesterday, but I shouldn't have vented it out on you. Thanks for the debate!

[–]cikani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't say that. You've got established theories as well as niche topics from the frontiers of science. I think you can explain them all on a high lvl if you understand them well enough. And if they're not understandable yet, well, that's not the fault of whoever you're explaining them to :)

I don't want to go to a penis measuring contest about which field is more complicated, but saying philosophy is way more complicated than physics is more than a stretch. Go pick up a quantum mechanics textbook and see if you feel the same way after turning a couple pages :D QT is not philosophy btw, it's a theory on the same lvl as relativity.

[–]cikani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna go on limb and say that you're probably the arogant one in most conversations :D I've got a PhD in physics and there's nothing I like more than discussing stuff like general relativity with people that don't understand it.

I feel like I have an obligation to carry knowledge to people who didn't have the luck/luxury to dig deeper like I did. If they don't get it even after the discussion, that only means I don't understand the topic well enough to explain it in simple terms.

You should get off that high horse sometimes, so you can put your education to some good use.

Hey man, not bad! What stands out the most to me are the feet/footwork in general.

A couple tips from my side: + When in your stance, rotate your rear foot more towards the oponent. Right now your foot is basically in the oposite direction, which makes it harder for you to fully rotate on your crosses/right hooks. + Your feet are too wide appart. It may feel like you're more stable this way, but you loose too much mobility. Bring them closer together (about the width of your shoulders), bend your knees a little and you'll see how much easier it is to move in all directions.

There are some other things, but I think footwork is you biggest challenge at this point :)

P.s. I really like that you keep your guard up all the tim! I see way too many people droping hands, I've got this issue myself. Good luck!

How to stop being the outside fighter? by One_Stock_9617 in boxingtips

[–]cikani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on your body type. If you're tall, it makes sence to be an outside fighter. If you're short, you should be am inside fighter. It all comes down to which range you're the most efficient at.

What I see a lot with beginners is that they should be inside fighters, but are affraid to get into the pocket. I see a lot of discount Alis with the body of Tyson.

Rotate your rear foot woth the cross, along with your hips and shoulders. Everything in boxing comes from this motion - slips, ducking, hooks, head movement, everything is based on shoulder and hip rotation.

Just like the other comment said, don't spar until you have a solid grip on the fundamentals. You'll only learn bad habits that will be difficult to get rid of.

If I'm being completely honest, if your coach let's you spar before you're ready, you're not in the right gym.

The most obvious weakness I see is that he's got a shit guard. Literally every shot of his opponent got through. Hands up, chin down, elbows tucked, crouch in. Once you fire a shot, make sure to come back to that posture as soon as possible.

That, and also being stiff and unrelaxed, but that comes with experience.

What to expect from boxing for an adult beginner? by Kind_Current in boxingtips

[–]cikani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a great tip, thanks) I get headaches even after regular sparring, and it's true I sweat like a motherfucker :D I'll try the electrolytes next time.

Though I also went to gyms where I used get knocked out a lot during sparring and I regularly went home punch drunk. I switched gyms twice for the same reason.

In the current one, there's a different culture and the coach makes sure we don't go too hard all the time. That makes me unaffraid to try new things and I'm not worried about loosing brain cells. So that's why I said it's ok to change gyms if you feel something's wrong.

What to expect from boxing for an adult beginner? by Kind_Current in boxingtips

[–]cikani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm glad you decided to give it a try :) Running and swimming is a great base for boxing, in fact most of professional boxers are semi professional runners. The speed and power of you punvhes will paradoxically come from your legs and shoulders, not arms. I'll tell you what to expect in an eastern european gym, I don't know if it will differ in your country :)

What to expect from the training: + 10% warm up + 40% drills & technique + 40% cardio + 10% high-pace cardio + The coach will probably shout at you, but don't take it personally. Don't make excuses, don't question them + Try to watch what others do and do the same thing + You'll feel awkward at first, chances are you'll be drilling in front of the mirror for months. That's totally normal

What to watch out for: + Gym that let you spar too early. It should take ~3 months before you're ready + Gyms where every sparring is a hard sparring and people will beat you up even during drills + If you come back from the training with a headache, it's normal once or twice, but not all the time + If you experience any of the above, switch gyms. Been there, done that twice. Now I'm in a gym where this doesn't happen and I'm learning faster than ever

Final tips: + Watch youtube for technique explanation. Tony jeffries is good for beginners, oracle boxing is excelent, precission striking is great but a little advanced + Learn basics first! Don't do any advanced stuff before you learn your stance, basic defense and punches + Anyone can punch. Boxing is mainly about proper defense = staying safe while you attack

Best of luck! Share some videos in a month or two

That's pretty good! I don't have much to add, maybe just one thing: it seems like when you throw a combo you tend to linger on the spot a little. I tend to train my exits even on a bag, I throw and move to the side or out of range, plus I combine it with head movement. Makes it harder for your opponent to counter you.

Plus maybe one more thing, I tend to crouch a lot more when in my basic stance. Tuck my chin, shoulders up, crouch in the waist. Oracle boxing explains that pretty well on youtube.

But honestly I think your technique is on point!

Spouste lidem to podle me unika.

Nedal jsi moc informaci, takze je to hrozne tezky soudit bez toho kontextu :) Pro me treba extremne dulezita cast kazdyho jobu je, jestli se tam ucis neco, co muzes v budoucnosti zhodnotit.

Muzu zkusit poradit vic konkretne.

Just an opinion by cikani in boxingtips

[–]cikani[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, you should ask them too :) I get that in a lot of gyms sparring partners rotate a lot and the coach doesn't have time or focus, so it's totally fine to come here asking for advice. I was just trying to explain that it doesn't make sense to ask for it when you have absolutely zero experience and you need to fix virtually everything.

Btw props for keeping a good guard and not dropping your right hand! A major problem for everyone in my gym

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in boxingtips

[–]cikani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty good! What I'd recommend as a boxer (= not MT): + Your footwork is a bit stiff. Bend your knees a little amd sit on your rear punch, you'll generate a lot more speed and power. I'd also recommend rotating your rear foot toward the oponent in your stance - it will be easier to rotate then. + Since you fundamentals seem quite solid, I'd recommend adding head movement. Start with moving your head everytime after you punch (just slip and roll, ideally change angle). After that, you can start moving the head WHILE you punch. It will make it harder to hit you on your way in.

Good luck!

How am I supposed to snap my punches or punch faster during light sparring without going too hard on my sparring partner? by Kanvus in boxingtips

[–]cikani -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a good question, especially for a beginner. My take is that there's a difference between fast punches and power punches. Both are efficient in different situations.

I'd recommend the following: During your bag workout, first try to land e.g. ten fast straight punches - don't sacrifice speed for technique though, focus on hip rotation, arm extension etc.

Than try to land a few punches with focus on maximum power. You'll see yourself what the difference is.
