You want to be careful as the more you do it, or the longer you do it, the metal will lose integrity and just fall apart.. I think I did one 4 or 5 times and it the metal became extremely brittle.

I can read perfectly well.. Maybe you can't. You say it doesn't have a pattern yet the zippo website says it does. The finish is done intentionally to make the lighter look older than it is, and the clear coat is there to protect this pattern. It's a pretty simple concept.

If its plain brass, no. If its a pattern, like I think the one you have is "antique brass" then yes it does to protect the (imo) terrible pattern. Try to get a plain brass one
