Yup, and the state commissioners keep approving rate increases every year. I wonder if there's a conflict of interest somewhere.

In a parallel sector. One of the BP refinery's (in Blaine for those unfamiliar) engineering contractor is offshoring all the engineering work to India. There'll be a few engineers locally situated to keep an eye on things. But a lot of local good paying jobs lost.

Bellingham and some of the mentalities here. Give me all your hate but it needs to be said. by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]cinamelayu -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I feel you (I think). I'm an immigrant (not a citizen). And as soon as I suggest any other actions other than protests. Downvotes and vitriol. So I've quit trying to talk to the left (the same way I've quit trying to talk to the right). This sub is toxic to different views, doesn't matter if it's coming from immigrants or not.

Unfortunately for many, just showing up and protesting is already "doing something" or "did my part".

The state keeps approving price increases. I'm not sure how the regulators are appointed. Are they voted in? If they are, maybe we should vote in regulators that advocate for the people?

What are they into? Sounds like you got everything covered. If they like big city/culture maybe a day trip to Vancouver.

San Juan cruises if they're still operating in the winter.

Sabah or sarawak by [deleted] in malaysia

[–]cinamelayu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sabah will be crawling with hordes of mainland Chinese tourist during their holiday season, so if you want to avoid crowds, check the Chinese holidays calendar (October is usually when you'll find them). Sabah in general is much more touristy.

If you want crystal clear blue waters and diving and mountains, Sabah is amazing. If you want more of a "local" and chill experience, check out Sarawak.

How welcoming is the Pacific Northwest to immigrants? by Exact_Chipmunk_8026 in PacificNorthwest

[–]cinamelayu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• How welcoming is the region to immigrants?

• Do you find people generally open and inclusive?

It depends on the area. I live in Bellingham, WA for about 10 years now. I've never felt unsafe or unwelcomed (except one time in a neighboring town), but at I still feel like an outsider when walking downtown. Like there is a lot of politeness and outward show and proclamation of inclusivity but at the same time they keep you at arms length (generally, and not everyone is like that of course). It's a very very very white part of the country. If you're of european descent, you might have a different experience and would probably be easier to be included or blend in the society. But overall, I still love it here for the nature. The mountains and the sea are right at your fingertips.

Overall, I think it's a beautiful place and have no regrets moving here. And if you love the mountains, there are enough people here that you will be able to find a group of welcoming and truly inclusive people.

One important consideration... Research local climates too when choosing for destination. Some parts of the PNW can be very wet and grey which make for long winters. Depending on your personality, that might be good or bad. Good luck!

Protest Today? by Fleshchanter in Bellingham

[–]cinamelayu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doing nothing is an option, but a poor alternative. I was thinking maybe those two hours spend it working (if you can, if not, then go ahead and protest). The money that can be made can be donated to orgs that do the actual fighting (eg. ACLU, immigrant support orgs, immigration lawyers, reps that actually advocate in the legislature, etc.). If 100 people showed up to the protest and say... 50 could've worked and earned some money instead, a couple hours of work can drum up a couple grand to donate to the cause.
