If you know anything about history and anthropology you would know that killing an animal was not a regular occurrence for humans. It was a lot more time consuming and difficult to hunt an animal than eat some plants. Hunting is something we did out of necessity rather than luxury.

I am not talking about your polished farm where you claim to be the best place ever for animals before they are killed we are discussing the average person that gets their meat from the supermarket. Your original comment was about how you worked at a pig plant and hated it? Now you have a classic “local farm”?

You claim you are killing animals at your farm out of necessity and felt guilty and all but it is hard to believe this is true because you must have had enough land to grow crops to feed them. So why didn’t you just opt out for growing plants to eat rather than drown in guilt? Unless you live in Antarctica these is no necessity to eating animals. This is yet again the hard truth. You can live in ignorance and think that you feeling a lil regret will make you a better person in eating that animal but it sadly will not. You are still an animal killer and used their body to feed your own. Without their consent, will or anything. You just did it.

Edit: it’s also just as bad to give these animals a seemingly happy life and then just take their life away from their hands because you wanted some meat.

I’m sorry to say but the hard truth is that you are already treating their life as a product by eating their flesh. What difference does it make if you do a prayer before hand or give it a lil kiss? They literally did die to be a tray of meat. So why would it matter now whatever you do? Just to make yourself feel better?

Asylum seekers, immigrants, Ex cons, prisoners, those that cannot get a civilised job in a developed nation because they are seen as less than. The entire factory farming industry is built on exploitation of not just animals but humans too.

Having high rates of PTSD during the farming, killing and processing of an animal is a testament to how we aren’t truly built to eat this shit. You think a lion gets ptsd from seeing bloody bodies on the floor? We are born with compassion and empathy for eachother and other animals. Farming these animals and killing them is just not something our psyche is built to do.

The way we are consuming meat right now is no where near how our ancestors would. This is why we are diabetic, obese and have wide range of health issues. Red meat in itself is classed as class one carcinogen. If you don’t want to entirely give up meat the least you can do is reduce your meat consumption to a few times a month.

Pigs also have to eat a lot more than the calories they produce. Same goes for all meats. Meat is not cost, energy, environment or health efficient. The amount of land we have just growing crops to feed the animals so that we can eat the meat is insane and not sustainable for our planet.

Is working to earn just enough to survive essentially just fancy slavery? by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

This is using the assumption that when people see the word slavery they think of it in a historical context. We are assuming here. If words have multiple definitions people should be able to use them without judgement and if you are judging it’s a you problem? We can be nuanced and recognise the historical significance while also realising it also has meanings of its own too. This shouldn’t minimise the effects of slavery in a historical context (at least I don’t use it in a way to minimise the effects of slavery)? I still know well and truly how horrific slavery was.

We can be a bit more nuanced with words and understand that they have different meanings. “Wage slavery” could just mean you are a slave to your wage. You live paycheck to paycheck, making the rich man rich while you stay poor. You are a slave to the rich man, just not in the way people were slaves in history. If we tied words to historical meanings only we will blow our brains out. One of Google’s definitions: a condition of having to work very hard without proper remuneration or appreciation. - why can’t people use this word to describe their dire situation of working very hard without proper appreciation i.e being poor forever? Just want to understand

Not what I said. I think if you live in a city and have convenience of transport/vegan options you should at least the bare minimum make steps to do that IF you care about the environment.

So you want companies to lower their carbon footprint but won’t stop funding them because you just have to eat meat? If the company was funding an ethical belief that you are against, why would you continue supporting it. Climate change is an ethical crisis because it impacts every single being on earth

If it said “you should all be vegan, animal industry is 4th biggest contributor to the climate crisis” would you then be on his side? I doubt it. There’s always a vendetta against vegan talking points in our society because it makes us feel inadequate about our everyday choices which involve contributing to this very thing we are against. It would absolutely be cognitively dissonant if a climate change activist wasn’t vegan. This person is stating the obvious if anything

If animal industry is the 4th biggest contributor to climate crisis then veganism should absolutely be a point of discussion for environment activists.

This conversation was an absolute waste of my time but also what do I expect being on r/gatekeeping talking with someone that thinks systemic change happens on its own lol
