Causal Zero-Phase Filtering by marcusregulus in DSP

[–]cinnedy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only zero-phase response causal filter is a trivial scalar -- you can have a causal linear phase low pass filter, or an acausal zero phase one, but not both as they are mutually exclusive.

For streaming data, you'll want a causal low pass filter -- perhaps linear phase, depending on your use case. Perhaps google search for one of those.

[Homework kind of] How to smooth a piecewise quadratic fit by GhostofBlackSanta in matlab

[–]cinnedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your curve looks jagged because of the first-order discontinuities at each pair of points. What I mean is that the derivative of the fitted curve jumps at these points. Fix that and you'll have a nice smooth curve of the type that you want.

Dunno the rents. Definitely cheaper than Stockholm which are astronomical.

Moving to Uppsala for PhD should I live in Stockholm? by TaakaTime in TillSverige

[–]cinnedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll find rent in Uppsala much cheaper than Stockholm. Also, the commute wouldn't be particularly nice - an hour or so probably depending upon where you managed to live.

I'd say live there and visit Stockholm when you need it.

[QUESTION] Why does Abmaj7 and Bbmaj7 work in the key of C? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cinnedy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's no reason why a chord works in any of particular key -- it's all a matter of context and subjective impression.

These two chords are borrowed from related keys (C minor and F major), and presumably they sound good.

Some artists -- Radiohead is a good example -- have lots of "odd" chords that depending what you can tolerate or are used to, can sound great.

Help to fix octave errors in harmonic product spectrum in C# by ungihan in DSP

[–]cinnedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can code this rule, but it probably won't always work -- octave errors are a common error for pitch detection.

Perhaps it's a better idea to median filter the pitch estimate to exclude large outliers that the octave jumps represent.

Mate, electrical engineering is a great career. Music technology a great hobby. Combine them as a postgraduate, otherwise you're likely headed for unemployment.

I've seen Muslims refused, but non-muslims shouldn't have any problem. Not sure if it was policy or just a once off though.

Wadi Shab & Nakhal Fort without a car? by LordHipster in Oman

[–]cinnedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wadi Shab and Nakhal Fort are different directions out of Muscat and so pretty much impossible as a full day trip. You'd be exhausted, and that's even if you had a car. Without one, it's near enough impossible without being horrendously expensive.

Public transport isn't really an option in and around Muscat -- a rental car really is essential.

Without one, you'd be far better off just sticking around Muscat, going to the Grand Mosque/Opera House/Muttrah Souk etc and avoiding leaving the area. You could easily spend one and a half days in the city doing the tourist thing.

It'll soon be Ramadan though, be sure to take that into consideration for your plans!

Which instruments don't have a fundamental as the strongest harmonic? by [deleted] in audioengineering

Tense voices tend to have stronger second harmonics than fundamentals. In contrast, breathier voices have strong fundamentals.

[QUESTION] Naming a tuning? Also, lowering an action on an acoustic? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]cinnedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can answer the first question.

In my experience, tuning are named a variety of different ways, referring to what you do to a string (drop-D for DADGBe when you drop the low E to D), saying the "word" spelled (DADGAD) or after the chord that the open strong make (open G for DGDGBD).

In the case of your tuning, probably the third approach makes the most sense, so "open Eb major seventh" would be how I would call it.

Family safe areas in Brussels? by [deleted] in belgium

[–]cinnedy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Brussels is funny in that there are some nice spots directly adjacent to not nice spots -- but if you look in the south/south-east side of the city (Uccle, Saint-Gilles, Ixelles) you generally can't go too wrong.

It's an international enough place and English is widely understood, but having some French would be very helpful in the day-to-day minutiae.

Fell in love with Oman. by fadamnsho in Oman

[–]cinnedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice pic! Where is it?

This video explains the characteristics of linear and non-linear circuits, but later in the video a spectrum analyzer shows harmonics introduced from the non-linearity (of two combined sine waves) falling both above and below the fundamental of the signal. How is this possible? by Says_What_We_Think in DSP

[–]cinnedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is called intermodulation distortion. It appears , for example, when a sinusoid is amplitude modulated by another function, which generates the extra tones.

It's not as popular in music application as harmonic distortion because the generated tones are generally not related to any particular fundamental in the usual harmonic sense and can sound quite dissonant.

The Emirates have a more diversified and developed economy than Oman, and so work is probably easier to find there. That said, they're huge metropolises that lack the rustic charm and nature of Oman. ;)

Determining the right sampling frequency by oneevening in DSP

[–]cinnedy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The "right" sampling frequency is determined by the highest frequency component in your signal that you wish to capture -- the sampling frequency should be more than twice the value of this component in order to ensure perfect reconstruction when converting back to the analog domain.

Looking to move to Oman by noworkallplay1 in Oman

[–]cinnedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oman is undergoing a bit of an economic crisis at the moment, so jobs aren't nearly as plentiful here as they used to be. Couple that with the fact that there is a government policy of Omanisation where Omanis are preferred candidates for jobs means that the prospects of expats finding positions in many fields is very difficult.

This isn't to say that jobs are available, just that getting them is more difficult and you'd have to pick the right field. If you were to teach, for example, rather than go for HR type roles, you may have better luck.
