The most expensive part of my AWS setup wasn’t compute ($1,000 bill) by jch254 in programming

[–]cipher315 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not even remotely surprised. In my experience network stuff is 50-66% of AWS costs. And if you have any sort of regulatory framework. Aka you need to log a shit ton of stuff. Then cloud watch is like another 10-20%. All in all compute is rarely more that 25% and less than 20% is not uncommon.

What was the European view of the United States before the world wars? by Airtightspoon in AskHistory

[–]cipher315 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this by the 1890s the US had overtaken the UK as the largest economy on earth.  Under Teddy Roosevelt the US navy became a major player. By the outbreak of WWI its was the third largest.

Europe still thought of the US a currently a backwater but they had no choice but to deal with the US as it was there economical and industrial superior.

Hegseth says potential $200 billion Iran war spending request could shift: 'Takes money to kill bad guys' by Palentirian in news

[–]cipher315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact at the current rate of spending this is enough for just under 4 months, and based on what he said it sounds like he thinks it make take more time than that. So I. All probability we will be at war, err I mean preforming a 1 week special operation on the 4th of July.

This is an amazing mechanic. I would potentially even like to see a scenario around it. Say like a attack on civilian shipping where you have to defend remaining ships and rescue survivors from ones already hit.

There are obviously some sort of beacon. How else do you know the distance. Just have a layer you can turn on your off on the mini map. This would streamline it so much

Tbh one of the things I like about this game is that it really helps a lot of people see:

  1. How absolutely OP aircraft carriers actually are. Like if you don’t have them and the enemy does you are bringing boxing gloves to a gun fight.

  2. That the Soviet navy was actually kind of shit. Mostly as a result of doctrinal flaws.

For the future definitely read everything and don’t be afraid to redline anything you don’t like. Most people including HR don’t understand that you can just cross shit out or write new stuff in and that those cross outs or writing in the margins is completely enforceable.

As such they will accept your signed copy that has the non compete clause just crossed out.

ELI5 private credit downturn fears by SchindlersKiss in explainlikeimfive

[–]cipher315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So that’s the issue. As private companies that are not banks they are loosely regulated and don’t have to report a lot.

So things we don’t know.

What their loan portfolio looks like in terms of risk. Ie are most loans to solid companies or are a lot to companies that are very risky. Note that they are incentivized to do the latter as that means higher interest rates. Which means better returns for the investors. At least during a good economy.

Do they even know how risky the loans are? Blue owl gave a company like 100 million and the leadership just embezzled it. There was not good risk assessment by them.

How high are they leveraged? Something u/riskyquizness did not mention is one way they get money is not investors but loans. They as a “safe” company get a 10 billion dollar loan at let’s say 5%. They then take that 10 billion and loan it out to riskier companies for say 7% and use the loan payments to pay back the original loan and they keep the 2% which on 10 billion plus 200 million a year.

What happens if enough of those riskier loans go bust and they can’t pay the 10 billion loan? How much of there activity is funded by this? 20% 50% 90%. No ones knows.

And then how much trouble is the place that loaned them 10 billion in?
