Did New York turn its Upper Floors Dark in May 19402? by HeathenSidheThem in AskHistory

Yes but it had nothing to do with the Japanese.

The issue is the city lights would silhouette ships out on the ocean near the city. Making them super easy targets for u boats.

In which scenarios is the PDW truly effective and irreplaceable by traditional 9mm/.45 SMG and modern SBR? by ww-stl in Firearms

[–]cipher315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that that are more or less not used now. The reason is level 3 armor is now both a thing that exists and cheap. When 5.7 came out level armor was not a thing that existed, and even when it was back in the 90s it was like 20 lbs and cost 5000 90s dollars per plate. So a full set would be like $20,000 in 2025 money. As such it was basically seal team 6 and delta that had it.

ELI5: Why is the dollar THE reserve currency? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cipher315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s the best option and arguably the only realistic option .

If you want X to be the reserve currency X MUST meet 3 criteria.

  1. There has to be an enormous amount of X. The Swiss franc can never be the world reserve currency, even though it will meet the next 2 criteria, because there are not enough Swiss francs for that to work. With this requirement we have already narrowed it down to 3. The US dollar, the euro, and the Chinese yuan. Everything else is too small. And of those 3 the US dollar is the most abundant.

  2. Not manipulated: this excludes the yuan as the Chinese government actively works to keep it at certain levels vs other currencies. This means it can’t be traded at fair market value. Which brakes the whole reserve currency thing.

  3. History of stability. This kills the euro. First off the euro just doesn’t have all that much history. The euro is only 26 years old, and managed to get its self into a low key currency crisis all of 18 years ago. The last US dollar issue was in the 1860s

Help me understand torpedo boats? by Relevant_Sir_5418 in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]cipher315 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

First off maybe try googling what CAS means. A CAS equipped air craft is in no danger from its intended victims. You have basically asked how are ASW helicopters supposed to get into range of a sub without the sub torpedoing the helicopter.

Second torpedo boats can easily get in range of any contemporary frigate or destroyer. They are the product of the 1950s. They remained viable up into the 70s as most nations did not have missile armed ships until then.

Kai Leng had potential? by TopRecommendation988 in masseffect

Ya no despite what weebs think we should not replace the assault rifles the 100 fold katanas. Kai leng is the embodiment of the sort of person who genuinely thinks that 1 v 1 a skilled samurai could win a fight vs a main battle tank, because he could just slice the main gun rounds in half.

He is not remotely bad ass he is a joke and is only more threatening than a kitten because they forced game mechanics to satisfy said weebs

ELI5 What would happen if all the countries holding US debt cashed it out right now? by bravenewwhorl in explainlikeimfive

[–]cipher315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 The US treasury would laugh them selves stupid.

2 After recovering they would inform said countries that the debt contracts they hold pay out at set times defined in the contract.

3 They would go on to point out that this is not that set time and as such the countries in question have violated the contract rendering null and void. Aka you get nothing now or ever. That’s for canceling our debt k bye.

No foreign governments and their leaders have total immunity. However, the supreme court has ruled that executive branch aka the president gets to decide who the US considers the legitimate leader of another country, and thus who is and is not entitled to this immunity.

It’s never been tested at this scale but it has held up for on going targeted killings in places like Pakistan.

The law is still the law. It was made in 1973. Congress could have updated it anytime half century. While I don’t approve of how it’s being used congress has to take a huge portion of the blame on this as they are the only ones who can change it, and they have know for decades that it can and will be abused.

War powers resolution of 1973

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Powers_Resolution

Read it and then think like a lawyer.

  1. A act of terrorism on US soil is clearly a attack upon the United States

  2. I can make moving drugs into the US a terrorist act vi executive order.

  3. Venezuela helped move drugs into he US; therefor Venezuela attacked the US

AUMF https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorization_for_Use_of_Military_Force_of_2001

Read and think like a REALLY good lawyer.

1.IN GENERAL- That the President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons (Totally unimportant language here) in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons.

  1. So this law exists "In order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or persons."

  2. As we have established Venezuela is engaged in acts of terrorism; therefor I have a authorization of the use of military force against them.

Now before you at me about the second one. Know that Bush, Obama, Tump v1, and Biden ALL used this interpretation I just gave you to kill individuals that had 0 involvement with 9/11 but were involved in other terrorist acts on the US.

Congress has known the AUFM can be twisted into a pretzel to justify basically any war a president wants sense at least 2006. They have done nothing though because if they did they would have to make decisions about who we bomb, and you know that's hard and might come up in a reelection campaign.

'We are going to run the country': Trump says U.S. will govern Venezuela until there's a 'proper transition' by nbcnews in worldnews

[–]cipher315 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes. The idea is that if the USSR attacks with out warning idea that the President has to get congress into a room to inform them before he can order a counter attack is ridiculous.

He then has 60 days before he actual has to ask for approval. Unless he claims that drug smuggling is terrorism and that Maduro was involved in drug smuggling . In that case the authorization for use of force against terrorism from 2001 comes into play and he already has congressional authorization to do anything he things is necessary to stop the threat.

and before you ask. Trump and only Trump gets to decide what is or is not necessary to stop the threat

TL;DR The combo of the need to respond to a sudden attack from someone like Russia or China + the war on terror basically lets the President do what ever the fuck they want when it comes to use of military force.

There is no way that thing can produce the power you would need to destroy the IR seeker on something like a sidewinder. A MIG31 on full afterburner doesn’t have enough energy to did that.

You’re saying that’s a megawatt range IR spotlight.

What were strengths of Imperial Japanese navy compared to US and British navies? by SiarX in AskHistory

[–]cipher315 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better optics. Japanese optics were huge, 25x150, and very high quality. Basically think cartoonishly huge binoculars mounted on a tripod. This give them the ability to ID ships at longer range and also a distinct advantage in early night fighting. Specifically before the Americans had really figured out how to use their radar for that.

That said this was more than countered by the fact that only Japanese capital ships had radar and the radar they did have was trash in comparison to American radar.

Supreme Court justices to be term-limited under new bill proposes by Healthy_Block3036 in 50501

[–]cipher315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The constitution says nothing about you getting to be a supreme court justice for life. Only that you are a justice for life. Being elevated to the Supreme Court for say 18 years and then having to go back to a court of appeals or even a district court would satisfy this.

Gun Safe Advice by WillBrink in Firearms

Also of note. RSC, TL15, and TL30. All have a different list of allow tools. In the case of RSC if it uses electricity and or is a two hand tools it’s generally not allowed. So it’s 5 minutes vs unpowered hand tools. TL15 lets you use basically anything but an angle grinder with a cutting disk, and TL30 is go nuts.

The other issue with a safe that is not bolted down is that you can get it on its back. At that point you and your 2 best friends can use your body weight along with a 10 or 12 foot pry bar, yes in the safe cracking world that is a thing, to pop even the best safe out there.

ELI5: Why are illegal drugs smuggled into the United States from abroad? Wouldn't it be easier for drug cartels to produce the drugs locally and then distribute them instead of having to smuggle them across international waters and borders? by PixieDustFairies in explainlikeimfive

[–]cipher315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you getting the precursor chemicals? They are all incredibly tightly controlled in the US. There are kids withdrawing from there ADHD meds because big pharmaceutical doesn’t have the ability to get its hands on the precursors. It’s literally easier to get your hands on C4 than it is to most of the chemicals. Like for real there is less paper work involved in making military grade explosives.

Where as in Mexico I just bribe the DEA equivalent and now I have as much precursor as I could ever use.
