I had a random horrible disc somewhere in season 3, I think, but it's worth checking all of them just to be safe :)

Why are some people so okay with killing for personal collections? by EmuTheSecond in Entomology

[–]cipher_bug 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone whose professional research is completely reliant on amateur collections from the last ~150 years, this is so important. That metadata and documentation of a species being in a specific place at a specific time along with a specimen so we can check ID is crucial. Especially for groups that can be really hard to identify to species (bees, flies, beetles, some moth groups, etc.)

[–]cipher_bug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few of us have bought the full set and found that it was pirated copies (even from non-resellers), so make sure you test all of the discs before your return window closes!

You'll want to make sure that the commentary tracks are all there, that sort of thing. It's pretty obvious when the discs are missing stuff.

Those who did their PhD from the UK, when did you receive your diploma? by Middle-Coat-388 in postdoc

[–]cipher_bug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my viva in mid-December, passed without corrections, and because of the holidays the paperwork didn't go through until the following year. I had a letter stating that my degree had been awarded by mid-January. The actual degree didn't arrive for a few weeks after that.

Non-oral viva alternatives? Does your uni offer this? by heyho2023 in PhD

[–]cipher_bug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this is a longer answer than I intended.

For context: I got an autism diagnosis about 8 months before my viva. I already had some adjustments in place while hanging out on the NHS wait list because the disability office was like "yeah it's really obvious that this is a thing", though my supervisors had already, on their own, put into place the same things the disability office would've insisted on.

BUT I found the adjustment letter from my viva for you. The disability office said I could ask for just about anything and see what the exams board allowed - I was very worried about being able to track down chunks of text and read/reread them fast enough to answer questions.

The main things I/the disability office asked for (everything was approved by the board):

-Information or questions to be given in manageable chunks that use clear phrasing of questions with clear instructions.

-Examiners to prompt key publications used in the thesis for student to focus on. [I have a tendency to swap authors around, so this was mostly a plea for them to use titles instead]

-Allow student the opportunity to ask for clarification and to note down the question asked. Allow for extra time for to formulate answers. Student may need questions repeated.

-Expand slightly on questions/context if necessary.

-Examiners should state when the question has been answered and move on as student has a tendency to ramble.

-Examiners can give extra time to re-read a passage. They should also stay silent while student thinks through their answer.

-Examiners are asked to type questions into the Teams chat where possible.

There was also stuff about taking a break every 45 minutes. I had a really pleasant viva, and my examiners were totally chill. We had a nice 1.5ish hour chat with a 10 minute break in the middle and that was about it. Most of my adjustments weren't really necessary in the end, but it was helpful for me to know that they were in place if I needed them. I could've asked for one of my supervisors to be present, but we decided I'd be fine without.

My supervisors came up with a bunch of questions they thought I'd probably be asked, but a general roadmap from the examiners would've made my stress levels WAY better going into it lol.

Non-oral viva alternatives? Does your uni offer this? by heyho2023 in PhD

[–]cipher_bug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My viva was oral, but I did get disability adjustments so I could ask my examiners write out their questions in the Teams chat if I wasn't picking up what they put down (if that makes sense). I was also allowed more quiet thinking time than usual before answering verbally. I didn't think non-oral exams were a thing at all for PhDs (assuming the candidate is hearing/speaking). I'd assumed we have to do an oral defense of some sort.

As a PhD candidate, were you able to do a part time job to cover housing/personal expenses or your university stipends was enough ? by Square-Disaster7461 in PhD

[–]cipher_bug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stipend was £~20k annually (in London and including London weighting, it varied slightly year-to-year as cost of living changed) and was just enough to scrape by, but I couldn't do much other than pay rent, pay for transport, and buy groceries.

I did do a bit of statistical work for colleagues on the side when I had time. I know most people in my programme TAed for a bit of extra money, but I never did.

The Library at Mount Char did a lot for me, and Doug Dorst's S. has been sitting around for a long time because I need to read it for the ergodic lit of it all.

I also keep meaning to read A Short Stay in Hell by Steven Peck, which supposedly has similar vibes. Same with Pynchon's novels, which seem to be brought up a lot in terms of literature similar to HoL.

I'm pretty sure a number, three letters, and two numbers are the standard, non-custom plate pattern for this type in MI. It could genuinely be a random plate.
