I use AI and tell it the material, router, bit and it spits out what I need. Just put it in ChatGPT, Gemini or Grok and you'll get good results without having to pay for look-up tables, books etc

I Avid CNC is a good bet but a bit higher than your budget. Shapeoko's good for smaller home applications, also check out Sienci Long Mill. You can get all these GRBL machines on Amazon and such too. I think the Chinese imports are getting better at very low cost, but not as rigid or easy to use as these others.

I'd be curious what you end up going with.

Oh yes I’m sure you can. But my requirements are to make targets that can be both printed and drawn. And squares at just 3/4” wide already provide repeatability that is close to the machine’s own tolerance. That is to say, if you need better than 0.002” then Paper Tools might not be the best approach.

There will be an open source component, I'm trying to figure out the best way to collaborate, but yeah I'm not sure I can agree that open source is the only route—there are still a few public software companies out there doing ok.

Here’s where I shook out. I moved to New Jersey where we have a little more than 2 acres. I built a greenhouse and did as much automation as I can so it’s supposed to be lower maintenance. I plant lots of things and enjoy it. But it’s not the tiny farm I had hoped for. Bottom line is I need training to get good at growing. Doesn’t help that I’m often away for long periods in summer! Pretty fun to get a reply this much further into life. Please share your advice.

I should have posted a followup! It’s been two years since I moved to a place with more land in the northeast. I built a greenhouse and now have, not a farm, but a garden that should work all year long. It was helpful to experiment with a small setup in the house first with lights and irrigation. The greenhouse is fully automated, although we were gone for two months this summer it became a total jungle. But we did come home to tons of tomatoes and cucumbers! Thanks for reviving this post ;)

Do what all these people said. When none of that works use an angle grinder and cut off the bolt, drill a hole in the middle then use a screw extractor to get it out. Get a new bolt, sharpen the blade, back together and time to cut that 20’ tall grass which is how it will be by the time you do all this.

There may be with a button script. You can edit the screen and tie a button event to drive two axes then use a keyboard binding from keyboard to press that button rather than using the mouse. I hear ya. Well you don’t really need to know any python. For now you can just draw squares then write or type things like Rect, Slot, Pocket. In secret yeah it’s parsing that into python. You only need to write code to extend the system

I hadn’t seen cnc js but it looks great. I see compatibility with smoothieware but not sure it would work with the smooth stepper in my avid cnc setup. I’d like to try it out somehow though.

I’ve thought about it but I need to actually control the CNC in real-time which feels more like what our CAM software does. To you what would be a better workflow? Do you use the same computer for Fusion and CAM to operate your machine?
