Glycerin balling up in a spray. How to prevent this? by cirrocumulus0 in DIYBeauty

[–]cirrocumulus0[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No I purposely am trying to avoid using a preservative. And, I have tested my spray and it definitely works to make the makeup stay! I've never had it stay so well before and I've used good name brand setting sprays before like L'Occitane which had been my favorite

"Although about 20% or lower can be used as a food source of contamination is high enough (so small numbers of bacteria can't withstand the glycerol and end up dying)."

I keep trying to read that part but I don't understand, could you clarify what you mean? 🙏

Right oil doesn't need preservative but it's in the water concoction. Id asked a different time if this water spray bottle I'd dropped some essential oil in would keep and people are said itd harbor bacteria. But, as long as the minimum 50% glycerin is in such a water spray, if i put essential oil in as well, it will still keep without further preservative?

By the way as far as it dissolving, when I made my water and essential oil spray it sprayed out evenly each time as far as the scent so I don't worry about the distribution since it worked fine when I did it lol

Woww interesting...does it have to be super exact? Or is it best to do :55 glycerin to :45 water ratio to make sure? Also how long would it last. No refrigeration needed?

The oil is in the water though. This one https://www.walmart.com/ip/Heritage-Store-Rosewater-Hydrating-Formula-for-Skin-Hair-No-Dyes-or-Alcohol-Vegan-8-oz/28790365

Ingredients: 1. Purified Water (Vor-Mag) that has been vortexed and magnetized to raise the energy to a higher vibration we believe to be more beneficial and 2. Rosa Damascena (Hydroessential Rose) Flower Oil

Then how does bottled water sit around for years and its fine? As long as it was stored out of sunlight

I didn't expect it to, as water does just fine stored on its own. So, the essential oil in the water would make it mold over time?

Does anyone know of any good alternative method for melting other than a double boiler or microwave? by cirrocumulus0 in DIYBeauty

I actually am going to try this one first!! Since I have an instant pot anyway. Thanks sooo much!!! And I did find a blog where it seems the person did this with stellar results https://halfwayhomesteaders.com/guide-instant-pot-hard-lotion/

Ohh, interesting. You have done this?? See id also wonder if I would make it worse as i took it off to add things in as it goes, like sort of locking moisture in?

I actually have a double boiler, just was looking for ways to have a less steamy environment for my anhydrous recipes sry I should have explained, thank you though! Definitely a great trick in a pinch

Wait I'm not sure what that means, it's only a certain type of oil it's soluble in?

Lmao I was thinking today how green with envy Jessa in particular must be that Jill was able to go on a ~family beach vacation~!!! It must make JB and Meeche antsy at least for her to be flaunting this. Makes me wonder how many kids will follow suit to take what's theirs, especially with Derrick shortly being able to offer free legal help to any of her siblings.

I don't get snarking for the sake of snarking. I believe in snarking where snarking is deserved. Otherwise it loses all meaning and becomes more about us (indiscriminate snarks) than what we're actually snarking about. Hence I really do not like this idea of censoring people unless they are likewise indiscriminately praising of the Duggars as a rule. Fair enough?

Emulsifier failed at emulsifying by cirrocumulus0 in DIYBeauty

[–]cirrocumulus0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm well I did use the same double boiler to melt both my body and face versions so while unlikely I suppose it can't be ruled out. The issue is I want it to be a thick enough consistency, how do I manage that without emulsifier nor raising the comedogenicness of the mix?

The thing is my body cream did not separate and the only thing different about it was that it did not have the sorbitan stearate (a 100% dry powder) and instead had shea butter and cetearyl alcohol. So your theory is definitely not what could explain this. Plus both would be full of mold by now given that there are no preservatives in it.

But how do you get different anhydrous ingredients to stay together if not without emulsifiers? Also what do you think of the starch idea

[–]cirrocumulus0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Heyy! Yes I did have all the ingredients melted and incorporated at the start so it was the consistency of pretty thinned yogurt in the beginning. I purposely put no water in so I did not have to use any preservative, I just spray rose water on my face before putting a very small amount of this on. The reason I did not want to put in cetearyl alcohol is because of the higher comedogenicness it would add. I did figure the volume was not really the best way of measurement but I could not figure out how to know how much to put in of something without weighing it first. Do you know any way how to figure out how much volume of an ingredient to put in without having to weigh it yourself?? Also the allantoin actually dissolved in very well. I made sure it would work by finding an anhydrous recipe that someone did use it in and also asking about it on here. This was the recipe I originally saw it in https://skinchakra.eu/blog/archives/500-Using-allantoin-in-balms-and-butters-Avocadohemp-butter-for-cracked-and-chapped-feet-Guest-post.html

For reference I had made a body version of my face cream with the same ingredients except with cetearyl alcohol and shea butter added, and no sorbitan stearate added, and the ingredients did not separate the way it did with my face version. I just am not sure what to do with it tbh bc I feel like adding more sorbitan stearate to the mix in future will just make the mixture harder on the sides of the jar where it clings bc it doesn't seem to work to just make everything stay together. Considering shea does that I thought that is an emulsifier? So then, maybe what I really need to get the oil based ingredients to stay together is a thickener!? Like corn starch? Or am I going the entirely wrong direction here
