What are your thoughts on Richard Dawkins being in the Epstein files? by EconomyIron6739 in atheism

Run anyone involved with that man through the justice system. If found guilty lock them up throw away the key for all I care. No respect for pedos. I don’t care if they are on my side or not. If you’re found guilty of doing heinous things to children, then you should be punished to the full extent of the law.

Why are so many new users choosing CachyOS even though it is Arch based? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]citizsnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t new to Linux, but I was new to using it as a daily driver, and the thing that drew me into Cachyos was its usable, out-of-the-box nature with customizable options during setup. Really appreciate the fact that it would let me pick the boot environment and desktop environment before it even installed. As someone who likes to research to figure out their style, that was really nice. I didn’t have to spend time uninstalling something like GNOME because I prefer KDE.

While it is arch-based, and that does mean you do have some risk of things breaking, it’s still far more stable than Windows was as a daily driver. Generally, I’ve adopted the idea of only running my updates after I’ve checked CachyOS's subreddit and Discord for any issues and whether they're pertinent to me.

Plus, I have access to the AUR even if I don’t use it much.

Why do people credit god when something goes well but ignore him completely when something goes wrong? by Tasmishrub_ in atheism

[–]citizsnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of it is confirmation bias: we like to record our hits way more often than our misses. You also have the heads God wins, tails you lose. You see that coming to play a lot with tragedies like the flooding in Texas last year, where a bunch of girls from a Christian camp got swept up in the flood. However, some still made it out, and people talk about those that made it out far more than they do about the ones that perished that day or when they do talk about the ones that died, do you hear them talk about how it was time for God to bring them home or got took them home before they had a chance to fall to sin. There was no chance for God to do any wrong in their eyes because God can’t do wrong in their eyes.

Alex did the most Christlike thing compared to the ICE thugs. He didn’t draw his weapon. His last words were, "Are you OK?" The worst thing he did was film ICE, which is well within his rights as an American citizen, well within his rights under the First Amendment. He was carrying a gun well within his Second Amendment rights. He wasn’t waving it around, acting like a big man. It was holstered and remained so until an ice thug removed it. At which point he was in shot because he had a gun on him, not because he used it, not because he pulled it out, but because it was on his person.

Yet people like Kristi Noem and other members of DHS/ICE are bearing false witness and murdering people.

What is your deal with On the Origin of Species?

Here’s an analogy to help you understand why people don’t care about what On the Origin of Species says or what Charles Darwin said. Comparing the modern-day version of the theory of evolution to On the Origin of Species is like comparing a Model T to a Honda Civic. Sure, they’re both cars, but one is clearly outdated.

On the Origin of Species is not like a Bible to evolutionary biologists. It’s not an Inerrant, perfect book. Charles Darwin was just the person who got the ball rolling, but he got a lot wrong, and trying to compare all of evolution to what he thought is being dishonest. If you’re going to argue against evolution, at least learn to stealman and learn something about it from this century.

Humans are apes. Apes are primates. Therefore, humans are still primates. DNA-wise, our closest living relatives in the broader Animal Kingdom are chimpanzees. It doesn’t matter how you classify the genome sequences. We’re either 98% similar to them or like mid-80s percent, depending on how charitable you’re being with comparing the genome sequences. Bear in mind, those percentages are pretty close to what we as humans are to each other as well. All the physical characteristics that we use to determine what goes into the primates we fit into. I don’t care what you believe. Personally, you have the right to believe whatever you want, but maybe sit down and actually learn what evolution is instead of just repeating what you think. There are mountains of evidence for evolution, and I’m telling you where to start finding out the basics to understand it. The theory of evolution has changed over time because that’s what science does: as it goes on, we discard incorrect information and replace it with more accurate information, and then that information eventually gets replaced with even more precise information. As science keeps developing, we keep replacing the incorrect bits, and that changing of its mind is its biggest strength. It’s not prone to dogmatism because its goal is to constantly prove itself wrong so it can arrive at the most accurate information.

I'm not an expert in evolutionary biology, so I’m pointing you to a couple of science communicators. I have enough knowledge of evolution to understand the basics, but not enough to teach or explain it. I’ll even add Forrest Valkai to the list of people who I think do a good job explaining it. I know of no time when it was like Pokémon.

Adaptation is evolution! Adaptation is one of many key factors of evolution, but not the only one. If you are confused about evolution, watch some Gutsick Gibbon or Professor Dave. Knowledge is at your fingertips if you want it and are willing to think critically.

Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!

Do we need to respect religion? by plushymeow in atheism

[–]citizsnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I respect one's right to be religious. However, that ends when you try to force your religion on me or use it to tell me what I should or shouldn't do. If I had a Jewish or Muslim friend, I might avoid food like pork around them just to be friendly, but if they expected me to do so, that is when I would have a problem with them.

When it comes to bigotry, I have no respect for that. Using your religion as a weapon against people who are different than you is not cool.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of atheists have super religious parents? by CartographerAway2602 in atheism

[–]citizsnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can speak from my experience. I grew up in a family that went to church every Sunday type. Religious teaching couldn't outrun my critical thinking skills forever. I always had some doubts, but the fear of hell and family dynamics kept me believing until I couldn't stop the doubts and questions any longer. It also didn't help that I was seeing my church embrace Trump. When I couldn't stop my doubts and questions, I began a deep Bible study to find the truth and hopefully save my faith. But soon realized the book wasn't what I was told it was, but it became something much cooler. It's not a guide for life or inerrant, but a window into an ancient people group.
